Fantastic Service

from Faroflyer
Hotel was clean and tidy. Staff very friendly and helpful.
My partners hair straighteners broke on the second day of the holiday ( apparently a disaster)!! and I asked reception if their technical people could look at them and try and fix them . Low and behold less than 24 hours later they were as good as new and so was my partners hair!! What a great service.

Breakfast was a lovely buffet ranging from cereals, bread rolls, cheese and meats etc to a fully cooked affair( although I dont think hot dogs as a replacement for bacon one day went down that well)! Best time is 8.00 - 8.30 - anytime onwards is very busy.

You cannot flag down or pre-book a taxi in the area but you can ask the reception desk to call you a taxi but they will charge you 1 Euro to make the call which was a bit much I thought.

Reception cash travellers cheques and I was given 95 Euro for a 100 Euro cheque.

Shop in hotel sells english papers daily and a phonecard that will give you 175 mins for 5 Euro which is good value.

As previously noted by other reviewers the pool area sun loungers are all taken will towels by 9.00am so need to be quick. Sun lounger hire at the beach is 15 Euro for 2 for the day and there are usually plenty.

Hotel ran a courtesy bus nearly every hour to and from the beach and the old town which was excellent. Not that well advertised but ask at reception for the timetable.

Restaurant recommendation - Martinique next to door to Legends pub. Great food and service, relaxed atmosphere and reasonably priced.

All in all a great holiday in a fantastic hotel which was in a good location. Would definitely go back to the Montechoro.

Would go Again!

My family and I stayed here in July 2006. We could not fault the staff who are very polite. They simply love children and always had a 'hello' for them. We stayed bed and breakfast and the food was good as was the service. The room was dated but very clean and the towels were changed daily. The cleaning staff even put my childrens teddies in the beds once they had made them up!

The only downside was that the paddling pool was been retiled which meant that the main pool was very, very busy. The tourists were doing their usual getting up at six in the monring to put thier towels on the sun loungers even though the hotel say that they will remove the towels if they see this done! So, we opted for the pool around the corner 'Club 99' which was excellent and very child friendly.

Would stay again at this hotel.

Brilliant!

Booked nine nights through telextext holidays (sunsplash) for around £800 bed and breakfast at the montechoro 4 star hotel - transfers in a minibus straight to the hotel and flew with excel airways (excellent flights). Hotel was very clean, bright, swimming pool had 300 beds and a parasol for each two beds. You must get down to the beds between 7.30 and 8am to get one. The swimming pool was great and brand new. The rooms were air conditioned all day and night, the coffee bar was waiter service and good food served! The breakfast was brilliant, and the staff were very friendly! Overall this was the best holiday I had ever had. This was my first time to Portugal and I will come back here next year!

4 Star it was and it proved it, the rooms were cleaned every day, towels and sheets changed every day, could not fault the hotel. It is at the top of the strip and we dined out in the old town and on the strip.

Early start to reserve your bed!

from BGS
We stayed on a bed + breakfast basis which was great + allowed us to eat out in some excellent restaurants both locally on the strip (a very short walk away) or in the 'old town' (<4 euros taxi) which we would definitely recommend.
Unfortunately the hotel have rebuilt the pool area + although the 'big' pool is finished there was still some major work still going on around the 'little' pool which reduced the sunbathing area considerably. As a result all the beds had been reserved by 8.30am at the hotel or you could use their other pool (5 mins walk) which had more room + beds free!
Overall excellent holiday only spoilt by lack of sun beds + noise of rebellishment work going on.

fantastic!

The Hotel Montechoro was fantastic! I stayed here on a bed and breakfast basis in june 2006 and really enjoyed the holiday. The rooms were cool and spacious, doulbe sinks, air conditioning, balcony. The rooms were cleaned daily and towels were always changed, it was well decorated and looked nice. The hotel Montechoro is situated at the top of the strip and although there is a lot of night life it is not at all noisy in the hotel. The staff are friendly and most were young men! I reccomend this hotel 100% for all types of people, it was relaxing and enjoyable. I would advise you to go bed and breakfast or room only as my only real complaint was the breakfast, but we prefer to eat out anyway. I would definatly return. One of the nicest hotels i have stayed in, and Montechoro it's self is lovely! Loads to do and the people couldn't be nicer.

Great hotel - forget the town!

from Emsie1980
Just returned from a holiday to the Algarve - first time to Portugal. We were extremely impressed with the hotel. The room was very large and clean and all the staff were incredibly helpful and friendly. The facilities were excellent, although beware that you have to pay extra to use the gym and tennis courts (But only about 7 euros each). The swimming pools were great!

The hotel is situated at the top end of the Strip, which is fairly quiet in comparison to the rest of the town. The Strip is neon-filled, English orientated, brash and loud. However, the Old town is lovely and there are courtesy buses throughout the day to whisk you away.

All in all, we had a great time and would recommend the hotel to people of all ages, but the resort to clubbers only!

burglared at our aparthotel (hotel Montechoro)

from claired35
We travelled to this hotel (June 2006) and we did enjoy our stay and overall our opinion was good, we stayed in the apartments attached to the Hotel Montechoro. The one thing which ruined out holiday at the end was where we where burglared through an inefficient pation sliding dooors, upon talking to other people staying there it was not the first time this had happen nor obviously the last time as the hotel where very sympathetic and polite it was a case of they had heard it all before and just apologised for the upset etc. What I would suggest to any toursit going there, there is a device that you can afix to your patio sliding door (which I since found in hardware shop) that a buzzer type sound is given off and alerts you to an attempted/broken entry, it will happen so take precautions. Security is not top of the priority list for the hotel so be warned.
I am happy to say that we had all our valuables in the safe and nothing was taken.

Big Let down

from A TripAdvisor Member
We we very disappointed in the Montechoro hotel, when we arrived we were allocated a twin room with tired decoration which was furnished with what appeared to be to two small cheep "prison cots", the carpet was badly stained and the bathroom was in need of replacement.
We complained and were given a better room.
Throughout our stay the pool area was being refurbished and when you were able to get a sun lounger you were subjected to hammering and tiles being cut. Snack bar was over priced ( a small coke, bottle of water and 2 packets of crisps 6.50 euros)
Breakfast was ok but the only verity was on alternate mornings you got either fried or something which resembled scrambled eggs, coffee was good as was the fruit.
Room was cleaned daily with clean towels and bedding.
To retain a 4* the hotel requires a total makeover as things are its only a 3* by the skin of its teeth.

Good rooms but no heat. We complained & so we changed. Still no heat. With only 36 patrons the Montechorro may be concerned about overheads but it IS open and it IS taking guests. I even had to wear my outdoor jacket in the supposedly high-cuisine glitzy 10th floor restaurant which has a narrow menu, bland international fare & an ourageously expensive wine card. Nor can unfinished bottle be saved for your next meal. On more than one occasion I had to force the bored maitre d' to condescend to notice that my wife & I had dared to enter his holy domain. He got no tip when we left after 11 nights, is he wondering why? Almost any British pub-grub beats the Hotel Montechorro hands down.

I wore my British-weight outdoor anorak in our room as it was so cold, the bathroom a fridge, the hotel cold, the concierge staff confessed they were cold, and the surrounding area shut up tighter than Rhyl, Barry or Skegness on a winter weekend. The Algarve out of season is dire. The so-called Strip is devoid of patrons and consequently almost entirely closed. In the Old Town the waiters outnumber the diners! The average British sea-food fish&chip shop is not merely as good, it is actually better than the Algarve's own attempts at serving fish. Ask for steak cooked the Portuguese way and plz for me heavy with the garlic & what do I receive, got caught several times on this one, standard steak & chips with a slice of raw tomato and a leaf of limp lettuce.

The hotel's capacity of over 1000 was patronised by less than 36 guests so no wonder its spring had run down.

My travelshop put it on amazingly cheap but a holiday that you don't like is not cheap, it is expensive. I cannot understand why holidaymakers go to the Algarve outside of May to September --- actually they do not, Albufeira is empty, streets, cafes, hotels, almost everything shut down. Nor can I understand why operators offer it, only makes their travellers turn untrusting, there is more to holiday marketting than filling empty aircraft seats.

Algarve Tourism might try visiting Magalluf, Palma Nova, Tenerife's Playa de las Americas, Malta, Egypt, to see how matters can be managed in the winter. For us Portugal never ever again. It is very very expensive everywhere, boring, and above all C-O-L-D --- Moira & Bruce

Nice hotel, lovely place

from A TripAdvisor Member
A lovely multi storey hotel at the top of the strip. Rooms are large and spacious and white is the dominant colour (as in the rest of portugal). The beds were comfortable and the aircon was quiet and effective. The bathroom was large and the shower was the most powerful i have experienced anywhere (but they have a drought so dont indulge). Sheets and towels changed every day. the pool was great and the games organised for the guests was just right. The entertainment team organise many parties for the children in the eveings and the kids are out of your hands for quite a long time.

Breakfast is Ok,not great and the plates are too small. It can also get quite crowded. Dinner menu in the main restaurant was quite good with excellent choice varying over different days. Mainly portuguese and mediterranean style of cooking. Food is fresh and great.

A supermarket is hidden round the corner opposite the garish Erins Isle pub. Well stocked and very handy.
