Great HoteL.... AGAIN !!

Just returned from our 4th visit to the Baia Grande Hotel and am pleased to say that the standards are still as high as ever. Very pleasant staff at reception, in the Piano Bar and even the Room Service. Ok, Albufeira and indeed the hotel was particularly quiet but at the end of the day it was January after all. Nice big room with great view, lovely breakfast and virtually our own private indoor pool, jacuzzi and sauna due to the lack of numbers in the hotel. Would definitely stay again and thanks to everyone at the Baia Grande for another great break.
Still a Good Hotel but maybe a revamp needed ?

Just returned from my third stay at the Baia Grande and once again I had a great stay. The general condition of the hotel is good and the rooms large and clean. The breakfast is fine as long as you don't leave until the last minute and the piano bar, although very hot, was fine. Just one small thing is that after staying there for the previous two years, I noticed that certain areas, especially the pool, are in need of repair and / or painting. I think a small revamp which definitely would include the pool floor is required sooner rather than later.
More like a 5* star hotel. Staff very friendly with excellent service

An excellent Hotel with very friendly staff. Location not as close to Albufeira as we would have liked. Great Hotel for couples wanting a quiet location.
Quality, Quality, Quality !!

As a first time visitor to the Algarve and indeed Portugal, it is with pleasure that I can strongly recommend the Hotel Baia Grande. The hotel is situated about 3km outside of Albufeira in a very small village called Sesmarias. The hotel runs a reasonably frequent free Shuttle Bus service into the town and also to local beaches which are only 5 Mins away. If you miss the free bus then a taxi into Albufeira Old Town is around 5-6 Euro's and the hotel reception will organise these taxi's for you for just 50 cents. The standard of the hotel from design to decor to cleanliness is nothing short of Superb. The pool area is large, the pool clean (but cold !!) and the sunbeds not too difficult to get hold of, also the poolside bar serves a decent range of Drinks and Snacks at pretty reasonable prices for a hotel. Our room was larger than we expected, the beds were comfy, the bathroom spacious and the maid service amazing (they even folded up any clothes left around and put any shoes/trainers away in the cupboard every day).
If I was to be particularly choosy, then the Piano Bar entertainment was not upto much but I suppose it is difficult to please everyone of all age groups. Breakfast was reasonably ok and served with a smile by the waiters and waitresses at all times. The reception staff too deserve a mention as from day one, they could not do enough for us, from directions, to taxi's to local restaurants etc.. By the way, there are a couple of really nice restaurants in the close vicinity of the hotel called Dom Diniz and O'Marinheiro which are both of an excellent standard. Also, within 10 minutes walk is a great British Bar called Scooby's which serves your typical British food all day and night and has Sky Sports on Plasma TV's showing all the English Premiership games as well as Soccer Saturday, it also what is apparently the deapest Swimming Pool in the Algarve on site. All-in all a great holiday location for a relaxing break away and I would most definitely stay in the Hotel Baia Grande again.

Stayed in this hotel for 10 nights, had arranged car-hire for pick up at arrival at airport through the hotel. On arrival there was no car and because we didnt bring the confirmation e-mail the hotel said nothing they could do so got another car 2 days later!
Room was nice even though the balcony was tiny ( we were situated at front of hotel) the ac unit was huge on the balcony and you couldn't sit out on it if you had the ac on the room due to the heat from the fan and the size of it was only big enough for one person!
Would recommend car hire beeches within 15 min walk , pool was nice food by the pool was good also for snacks.
Gym is located by indoor pool well couple of exercise machines and it is very warm in there so wouldn't want to be working up a sweat. Pay extra for safe in room and towels. Staff were helpful overall nice hotel but I think a bit on the expensive side!!!

exceptional holiday made so by quality hotel

from UkStef
Nothing was too much trouble for the staff. Food very good, although the occasional visit to the Mauritimo Rest (approx 200mtrs west) is worthwhile. Pool and other facilities very clean and well maintained. Regular free courtesy bus to beach and Old Town very usefull. A lot of residents were repeat customers. we will be next year!

fantastic hotel all round

from Kellber
This hotel was fabulous. There were 3 adults and one being me a 23 year old that enjoys a rexaing holiday with my family. Not many kids around and lots of lovely weather for sunbathing around the large pool area. The pool was freezing thou but very nice once you got in. The cleanliness of the hotel was excellent and we couldnt fault a thing. The staff were very friendly and tried to help in any way possible.
We would definatly go here again as it was a quiet hotel in a quiet location but still time to go into town on the free shuttle at 7pm and have a nice meal. You do need to get a taxi back thou but it is only about 6-7euros (about £5.00) which is nothing for a good night out. The entertainment could of improved thou but again if you just want a nice quiet relaxing sing song here is the place to stay. The food was lovely but i didnt manage to eat in the a la carte restaurant sorry cant comment but looked lovely. I would recommend the bbq in the pool area if they are running this when you go as the food was very nice and they had a lot of chioce with portugese folkj dancing, a fabulous night aroung the pool.

Once again thank you to all staff at Baia Grande for making our first holiday to portugal a dream.

Gorgeous Hotel let down by location

from JennyandTim
We have just returned from a 10 day holiday at this hotel.
Good Points:
1) Large, clean, modern room with air con,TV, tables/chairs, lots of mirrors and a mini bar that can be used as a small fridge (you may get charged for this but we didn't!) Bathroom spotless with bidet, powerful shower, plenty of towels and free toiletries
2) Pool area is stunning- plenty of sunloungers (free) but must put your towel down early to get sunniest spots. There are also hammock chairs and a shaded grassy area. Pool never seems crowded as its so big and lilos/rings allowed unlike with a lot of hotels I've been to.
3) Very helpful and pleasant staff (especially on reception) and they encourage you to set up tabs everywhere! The hotel seems very laid back.
4) Happy hour at poolside bar (5-6pm) and indoor piano bar (5-7pm) 50% off drinks!
5) Trips/Taxis/Airport Transfer can all be booked through reception- good deals.
6) Paper shop on site (would be perfect if sold cold drinks as well)

Bad Points:
1) Location. Set aside money for taxis/hire car as shuttle bus only goes to Oura beach and the Old Town not 'The Strip' area/beach which is cheaper, livelier and has more choice of restaurants/bars. Although free, the bus is small and cannot always accomodate guests- especially on weekends when they tend to use an even smaller 7/8 seater bus! They will return to pick up again but its frustrating to have to waste time waiting.
2) The hotel is so isolated that the poolside bar is really the only place to eat lunch if you do not want to go into the town to eat. The menu does not reflect the demand- more light snacks like toasted sandwiches need to be introduced. Breakfast not to our taste either (continental bacon/sausage).
3) Indoor Pool/Gym is unbearably hot even though rest of hotel is air conditioned.
4) Watch the grass sprinklers in the morning if your balcony is on ground floor- our towels/swimwear that were drying on the balcony rails were drenched.

Overall- this hotel is gorgeous and we had a great holiday experience but others need to be prepared to sacrifice a good location for this 4 star hotel. I personally love to walk more than use cars when I'm on holiday but here- its too far away from anthing to do so.

As a group of young ladies, we were concerned that this hotel might not be suitable for us. However the hotel was lovely - clean, tidy rooms of a high standard. The pool area was clean and pool bar was always open and offereing a full range of refreshments including a very nice lunch menu. The hotel is suitable for families and children, however it did seem more populare with the more mature age group. We went into Albufeira old town (a must!) twice and each time reception arranged taxi's to pick us up from the front door. Total cost for a cab was never more than €10 - bargain. We also walked down to a very nice restaurant just a few yards from the hotel, we ate al fresco and the food was exquisite. This was my second trip to Portugal and I will definately be returning - it is a lovely area of the world.

3rd time to Baia Grande

from A TripAdvisor Member
This was our third time to this hotel and this time I found it to be a little disapointing. The previous times we had a room on the second floor which was brilliant, this time we were on the first floor (room itself still brilliant) but because we were beside the restaurant, we were wakened very early every morning with the sound of moving chairs, which was really annoying. Being in our mid thirties, this time we found that there was an older crowd staying at the hotel, who were in bed very early and up very early. The hotel itself is lovely, clean and really nice staff, and we found that they had introduced things like massage, room service since our last visit, but still no tea/coffee facilities in the room and the mini bar was not nearly as good, you also had to pay for the use of the pool towels. The breakfast buffet wasnt as good, but they had opened an A La Carte restaurant, which we used 1 night, which was good, but because we were on our own, we didnt eat in it again. Make sure you visit Rabbit beach and eat in the restaurant at the beach, excellent. This is a really lovely hotel, but on my last experience, is now catering for an older crowd.

Great holiday at this hotel!

from ElaineWB
We spent a week at the Baia Grande hotel in April 2005. The hotel is in a nice location about 8km outside Albufeira - not the best Algarve resort! You do need a car to get about.
The hotel was great. The rooms are large, well furnished and very clean. There is a mini bar (if you ask for a key for the mini bar and only use it to store your own stuff, you will be charged 10 euros, but if you just drink a bottle of water, it will only cost you the price of the water!). There is a hair dryer in the bathroom and you can get towels from reception for use around the pool.
The grounds and pool area are well maintained. The buffet breakfast was good, with a reasonable choice of both hot and cold food. The regular barman in the piano bar was excellent and very attentive and the bar itself had a nice atmosphere. Reception staff were pleasant and helpful.
There is a superb restaurant about 5 minutes walk away, called 'Dom Diniz' (turn right out of the hotel, then turn left at the crossroads towards Gale). The grilled halibut was excellent and a nice gesture was the free liquer you are offered after they have given you the bill - which was reasonable. (Try the almond liquer, it's wonderful). We will definitely return to both the hotel and the restaurant.

Nice Hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
The Hotel itself was lovely- our room was really nice and had a wondeful view of the pool. The only thing was the room didn't have an iron or any tea/coffee making facilities which you would expect from a 4* and you had to pay for items to be ironed! There are some restuarants close by so you don't have to eat at the hotel all the time. I found the breakfast was not at all appetising so I didn't bother to eat at the restuarant for dinner. We hired a car which I would highly recommend so we went into Albufeira town for meals which had loads of places to eat at good prices. We also drove into Vilamoura- which was excellent. The front desk staff were quite good at giving us directions to places we wanted to go. I was only disapointed that we had asked for a double bed and didn't get one- only a twin which we tried to push together but the maids didn't get the hint to make up the sheets so it seemed more like a double bed- until our last night! Overall the hotel is really nice only some facilities it lacked and the food was not nice!

Good quality 4* Hotel

from Bar1
Just returned after a 2 night stay at this hotel. The room was very large and had A/C and a lovely pool and distant sea view. The hotel was very clean, well decorated and furnished. The food was of good quality and buffet style. We ate out one night at a nearby restaurant called the Marinhero (right out of the hotel then left at the main road and left again then on the left, 5 mins walk altogether) and had a lovely meal. The hotel has a nice beach called Coelha about 15 minute walk away and lovely cliff top views (10 minute walk away). Apart from being a bit isolated (courtesy bus though) I would thoroughly recommend this hotel.

Top Local Tips for Albufeira

Rent a car Renting a car is strongly recommended for this area. Albufeira town is almost on a par with Benidorm but much smaller.

Eat close to the hotel The Old Town and Strip are very commercial and do not expect to get great food there. I would recommend you go to one of the restaurants within walking distance of the hotel.

GO ON TRIPS Whilst in this area, it is worth going on a couple of trips. Portimao is really worth a visit.
