Better than we expected!

from A TripAdvisor Member
After reading some reviews on the internet I was a little bit concerned about about the Dom Panchos apartments.
However as soon as my boyfriend and I arrived my doubts vanished. Those who have written less than positive reviews must have been really unlucky with their experiences because our apartment was perfect for us. It wasn't a fancy hotel, sure the shower could have worked better or the fridge a little bigger etc but for what we paid for it, we couldn't have been happier.
We had a studio apartment with a pool view, and were pleasantly surprised to get a bit of sea view thrown in too! The bed was comfy and the balcony was nice enough, lovely to sit outside with a glass of wine after a night out (or before!!) The pool was very cold but once you got used to it was really refreshing and fun.
Staff were friendly and helpful and all spoke excellent English. They helped us to book a taxi transfer back to the airport for almost half what we paid on the way there. They also stored our luggage for 7 hours on the day we had to check out.
We went out to the strip for food every day so can't comment on food available at the apartment.
The bar was a bit dark but a good place to watch all those World Cup matches that every male there refused to miss! Not the cheapest bar in town but entertainment every night (karaoke/old men with guitars etc) made it a nice enough place for families (especially with kids) to spend their evenings.
We sampled some good food in Albufeira, my favourite was Beef in red wine in Portofinos - yummy! We also had a really good night in the bar of Portofinos - lovely staff, lethal vodka measures and an addictive arcade machine!!
Santa Eulalia beach was very nice (about 15 mins walk) but be prepared to pay 15 euros for sun loungers and a brolly. Drinks also seemed more expensive here.
Visited the old town, (40 mins walk - bring suncream!) very nice change of scenery but unfortunately building work made the main square dusty and noisy.
I loved Albufeira, it was great for a relaxing couples holiday but had plenty of groups of friends who seemed to be having a great time. Plenty for kids too.
The only reservation I would have about going back is that it can get a bit nippy as its quite breezy - good for hot days, not so good for going out for the evening in a skirt and little top and sitting at an outside table all night - had to bring a cardi!
Fab holiday though, didn't want to come home.

Have just returned home from staying at the Dom Pancho for 2 weeks had FANTASTIC holiday - hotel is EXCELLENT - large rooms, very clean - staff very friendly and extremely helpfull - have NO bad things to say about this hotel - pool very big with plenty of sunbeds - tennis courts- gym - situation of this hotel is great - about 5 minutes from strip and 10 from beach - beach is gorgeous and you can wak to Old Town walkng along the beach. When we were their Old Town was getting renivated so couldn't see it at its full potential.
Food in Algarve is FANTASTIC, go to The Zoo for breakfast, has best breakfast in Algarve and staff are very friendly. For dinner there are numerous restraunts all selling excellent food - Reno's in the strip sells fantastic steaks, Koala Gradens just off the strip was my favourite restraunt selling the best chicken piri-piri i had tried and there apple pie was amazing went twice whilst there and they remembered us which was nice. The Clay Oven is an indian restraunt and it is very nice,at the top if the strip near the taxi rank.
Went to the bullfighting on Friday good night out. Also Slide and Splash water park was a great day out.
In Portugal the now is the Internationsl sand festival, this was spectacular something ypu must go see if you are planning on going to Porugal before September(getting taken away then not to be rebuilt), we just got taxi to it.
At night the strip is very busy - one of the best bars is Matt's, they have a live band on everynight, the band that play on a tues and sunday are the best. The bars stay open to 4 oclock in the morning!
Plenty of shops for souvenirs, and there is a supermarket right across from the Dom Pancho(Alisuper) about a 20 minute walk is a large supermarket called The Modelo were you can get almost ererything you could need.
We were their when the World Cup started and there was not a single bit of trouble the full time we were there, and the portugal police regualrly patrol the streets so you always felt safe.
In Portugal there is a breeze which is fantastic during the day when it is very warm but when the sun goes down it can get quite chilly so i would advise you take a cardigan with you.
I will definetly be returning so Portugal again and wouldnt think twice about staying in the Dom Panch it is a fantastic Hotel.

Great Holiday

Stayed at the Dom Pancho for 2 weeks in May'06. Hotel basic but roomy and clean. Great location, near to lots of cheap bars and restaurants, not far from strip or beach. Disappointed that Old Town was being refurbished and looked like a building site. Cant see it being finished this year. O'Cantino snack bar just next to hotel, cheap, good food and friendly. Monsoon Indian/Thai buffet, lush, all you can eat for 12Euro. Friendly owner. Nelsons Sports bar at the end of the strip on the top of cardiac hill, fun, friendly and next door to a brilliant English fish and chip shop (Better than back home even...) Tried Portugese restaurant Bom Garfo sat for 20 mins and were completely ignorned, not busy, so just left...Would not recommend, very rude.

satisfactory but nothing special

Mixed feelings about hotel which agree with most of the reviews.Potentially a brilliant hotel but in need of upgrade inside. Lovely gardens in a grassy area with small park next to pools which kept our 2 girls(4 and 7) mostly occupied. The pools were very cold and would have been great to have use of the indoor pool which is only open nov - march.

Other facilities such as the gym, sauna etc were closed easter weekend when we had a day of rain and would have used them. Tennis courts were also locked.

Location of hotel is good. Close to all facilities but far enough away to be quiet. Walkable to the beach, which is lovely, but not next door.

A good budget holiday which we enjoyed(weather hot in sun but cool in shade at this time of year). We would however have a few reservations about going back to hotel and would try somewhere different. Brisa sol looked better for about the same money(seguro). Would try somewhere out of Albufeira if going again though.

Value For Money

Accomodation is very basic! You get what you pay for! The rooms are basic, but large enough for a family of 4! The kitchens only have fridge, sink, 2 hob rings and a small microwave sized double grill! Its not ideal to cook a meal in, but does for breakfasts and lunches! The Indoor pool is what attracted us. This was warm although i'd say avoid the toilets, especially with children as they're extremely slippy and are not cleaned that often! Most staff are friendly! The outside pool is large and has a seperate kiddies pool and there's plenty of sunbeds! Make sure you take your own towels though!!! There's none at the pools and you're not allowed to remove them from the rooms!
Good location for the strip! Hong Kong restaurant is great for a chinese and Papulas Pizza for a pasta or a pizza! The best is the sizzling steak house at the bottom of the strip! Small supermarket just across the street and a larger one 5mins away!

The Good. The Bad and The Ugly.

The good points about Dom Pancho is that it's very reasonably priced , close to the strip , has a popular indoor pool, doesn't have all the noise of the strip in the evening and if you have a pool facing Studio it's odds on that you will get the sunshine on your very small balcony most of the day .
There was always plenty of hot water.
The bad points are numerous.
The bar has no extraction so is very smokey .
The one bedroomed appartment we stayed in was in need of a good lick of paint.
The cleaning staff whiz round quicker than roadrunner.
The windows had never been cleaned in months.
The beds are comfortable but better if you make them yourself 'cos the cleaners just pull the covers over and leave the bottom sheets wrinkled.
We had to ask for clean towels.
Some lighs worked but most didn't.
It was ok but it's not a place i would hurry back to .
Try Auramar.....very nice.

Functional but delapidated

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed for one week on a bed and breakfast basis in early September. We didnt book this hotel but had to stay there for the first week of our two-week holiday because of a problem with our booking (maybe this affects our judgement a little?)...

Reception and lobby areas seemed nice enough, although on close inspection everything looked a little tired. The room we were given was a double room, spacious enough, but very VERY tired looking, dusty and run-down, with tatty old furniture and a light that seemed to have been fitted after the fact (a ceiling light with it's wire hung over a hook to meet the fitting where an old wall-light used to be). The floor tiles were cracked, shower was a plasticky type thing that leaked, fridge dripped rancid-looking water and the kitchen tap was leaky to boot. The floor of the balcony was really dirty and the (once white) balcony furniture was really grubby too.

The pool area seemed OK although again it was tired and run-down with nowhere near enough sunloungers. As with everything else in the hotel, the snack bar seemed generally run down and in need of sprucing up.

We stayed on a B+B basis, which apparently is something of an anomale at this hotel as there was no 'proper' breakfast setup. We were served (every morning) with: 4 bread rolls, 4 cheese slices, 4 ham slices, 2 mini-packs of jam and 4-mini packs of butter. Also provided was tea and "orange juice", which was actually still Fanta, served in a polystyrene (McDonald's style) cup with ice and a straw. When we asked for a top-up on the juice we were told we'd have to pay extra for it! We like continental breakfast but the lack of any options whatsoever was below standard.

On a positive note, the hotel was in a nice location. 5 minutes walk from the strip and in a nice quiet "cul-de-sac" type area with little noise. As with seemingly everywhere in the resort, however, we were overlooking a building site!

By no means was this a terrible hotel, but we don't think it warrant's its three stars and I'm sure there are better hotels for the money.

loved the quiet location

from Salroy
Have stayed several times. Basic but comfortable. Great for peace and quiet but close enough to the hustle and bustle ifyou want it. Friendly staff, 24 hour reception.

an entirely enjoyable holiday

Situated in walking distance from 'the strip' the location of these hotel apartments offer a good choice of restraunts, bars and clubs, great for the evenings! During the daytime, it is worth while to take a trip down to the beach, although quite a long walk from the hotel. A taxi ride into the 'old town' is also a great idea. The streets ands shops are more cultured than that of 'the strip' and offer a comfortable, friendly atmosphere. There is also a selection of small market stalls and street entertainment is shown in the evenings, which can be watched from the square or from the many balconies of surrounding bars.

The hotel itself is fairly simple but satisfactory. There are, on average, good standards of cleanliness, although the maids may sometimes forget a few fesh towels or suchlike. There are two poolbars, one of which offers tasty hot food, but lacks somewhat in originality and choice, however this is made up for by the staff's constant energy and eagerness to ensure guests have a pleasant stay. Security boxes and air-conditioning are availiable.

The gym facility is fairly impressive. Apart from the fitness room, it boasts a sauna, steamroom and jacuzzi, which often distracts members from fitness altogether!

The hotel offers entertainment most evenings, however, better entertainment is likely to be found on the strip. During the evenings there is access to a gameroom. This is allowed to be used by children as well as adults and is a great way to spend an evening if looking for simple relaxation.

Overall, our stay at the Dom Pancho hotel apartments was enjoyable and i would mainly recommend it to families wishing to have fun but also in need need of relaxation.

Happy Holidaying!

Ghost Town

from gordie3
If you are thinking of going to Albufeira in the Algarve for Christmas next year, forget it. You will be bored out of your mind. There is nothing to do, very few places are opened, and the place is like a ghost town.

Probably in the Summer it is a lively place, but in the Winter you will die from boredom.

The accommodation at Dom Pancho apartments was adequate, and the cleaning services acceptable. The prices in the bar were a little high and the "entertainment" or what they call entertainment was dreadful.

The Strip was mostly closed. There were of course the usual tacky souveneir shops with inflated prices. The place was like a ghost town with very few people going about.

If you like to spend your holiday doing nothing but drinking, then this is the place for you. The British bars and a few Portugese bars were open, but that's about it.

I couldn't wait to return home.
