Historical Traveller Reviews of Bayside Salgados Hotel

A bit far from anywhere,but...

from ladylinda
I've just come back from Bayside and I couldn't find fault with our apartment and believe me, I tried!! After reading the other reviews on this site, I was wondering where on earth I was taking my other half to!! OK, it was a bit remote, but we had a car, so it didn't bother us. The supermarket is a 10 minute walk away. The nearest restaurant (apart from the one on site, which we didn't use) is a 10 minute walk away. The nearest snack bar is 2 minutes away. Yes, there is some building work going on nearby, they are building a new clubhouse for the golf course. The swimming pool was covered/enclosed,so using the pool was an unexpected pleasure!!
There was no entertainment, apart from a karaoke on saturday night, although the football was shown most nights. The bar prices were very reasonable-Pint of lager 2.40 euros and a spirit and splash 4 euros.
A taxi into the Old Town cost 6 euros, though I suppose they may put up the prices in the summer season.
Our room was cleaned every day except Sunday and we had 3 lots of clean towels and the beds were changed twice.
There was no kettle (we always take our own, anyway), but there was a microwave. We had free air conditioning too!!
The balcony was large enough for a sunbed, 2 chairs and a table, and on the last 2 days we had to move off the balcony and go down to the beach (20 minutes walk away), because it was too hot!!!
The only really bad thing was the stairs to the upper floor apartments. They are spiral stairs and very narrow where you'd expect to put your feet! Not ideal for older people or young children. I've included a picture of these. Lights come on automatically when you approach the staircase day or night.
There is only one entrance to the property, although there are other gates which are kept locked for security reasons. These may be upgraded in the future to swipe card gates and therefore available to use. All in all we had a great time, no problems, decent accomodation and good weather-what more can you ask for?

Dont go

from adelebruce
Only back a few days and still so angry with the way we were treated be the staff.
The mini bus driver was drunk while driving the bus at 4 o'clock with children in it, he would not let 2 pensioners carry a bag of shopping on the bus even though there was only 2 other people on it, loads of guests complained to the staff about the bus driver, we were ignored.
The rooms smelled of damp which is kind of expected this time of year.
Some one went into our room and stole money, the
staff were so unhelpful, after 2 days i was ready for coming home.
Would not send my worst enemy to Bayside

Absolutly lovely

We ordered what we thought was a cheap and cheerful hotel, however we were all pleasantly surprised! with the cleanliness, the general house keeping, the hotel, and grounds.
The staff were nice especially ''Ricardo'' who was fantastic and helped to make our holiday, a wonderfull one and one we wont be forgetting. THANKYOU

t be put off................

After reading a number of negative reviews we arrived armed with details of alternative accommodation and fearing the worst.

However, we were pleasantly surprised. If booking, I would recommend going for the 1 bedroom apartments for that extra bit of space. The accommodation was clean, the staff very friendly and helpful (with the exception of the shuttle bus driver, who I think begrudged every mile of road between Bayside & Albufeira!!!! Hold on to your hats, it could be a scary ride). The food was excellent value for money and there are a few good restaurants within a 10 - 15 minute walk. If you are a fish lover, try the various fish dishes available at most eateries.
Although Bayside may be considered by some as a bit out in the sticks, this did not hamper us getting out and exploring the Algarve even though we did not have a car. Try some excursions available at reasonable prices from reception. If you have plenty of time, the local buses also go to most of the surrounding resorts. Alternatively, taxis are cheap. So what, 8 euros? you are on holiday after all! We had a good mix of getting out and about and relaxing either on the beach or by the pool - plan your days and you will have a wonderful time.

No kettle or toaster? I don't go on holiday to cook. Tell me where in the UK you can get a meal and bottle of wine for less than £8.

not the ritz. But good value for money

Friendly staff, entertainment on each evening from exotic dancers to bingo and quizz. Room cleaned each day except sundays. Covered pool, which was cool but not frozen. So overall appartment 7/10 . Location gets a big zero.1 mile at least to beach up hill. 1 mile to lovely resturant up hill other direction, resturant on site more like snacks. 10 miles to Albufeira up UP hill. The free bus seats only 8 and finishes at 4pm it has a driver with PMT.You have to wait 20 mins for his return if there is a few people already waiting. If he has to make 3 trips its more pleasent to walk and safer. Met a couple who had been three times to same appartments they love the peace and quiet , and dont mind paying lots for taxis. But not for us

not bad at all.....................

from chelbi
as the other people I read the reviews after booking and thought oy my gosh this is going to be terrible! but I was pleasently surprised ok so the rooms were really basic but clean(ish), no kettle or toaster but we made do without.

The supermarket was about a 10min walk away and has everything you need great deli in there the meat and seafood were great and soooooooo cheap!

The hotel staff were very friendly and helpful the restaraunt in the hotel did have a limited choice of food but the food it had was very nice indeed.

the mini bus to Albufeira was ok, I would say though get there early or it's quite a wait as the bus only seats 8 the pick up times are 9am, 12 and 4pm. but if there are lots of people waiting to go can become a bit of a nightmare waiting especially with young kids very boring waiting. Taxi back costs about 6euros.

the pool was very cold, although covered in the winter the water has no heating so it was very cold but ok once in.

The childrens play area was rubbish, the swing was broken the slide is at such an angle it's like a death slide, my little one went flying of it. Also a few nails poking out, I'd avoid that if I was you.

the best thing about this place though is the beach, it has an amazing natural beach, great sand dunes and fantastic views. really worth it. would go back again not neccesarily to Bayside but maybe one of the villas that are for hire.

All in all though we had a great family holiday.

if you like walking you'll love it, if your used to a car then hire one.

What do people expect!

from Horse2004000
I read the reviews just before we were due to go to bayside and was dreading what we were going to find. I mean honestley what do some people expect. The staff couldnt of been more helpful, hardworking and friendley. The apartment was spottless and cleaned every day, clean towels every other day. Pool lovley and clean, food in the restuarant excellent and good value for money. Beach clean and lovley and no hills to climb like some people had said. We really could not find any fault at all. Wonderful bakery on the corner, also doing english breakfasts if you fancied a change. Breakfasts at bayside great value for money, 5 euros including fruit juice and coffee. If you are going to bayside dont be put off, we really enjoyed our holiday and will be returning next year. Weather was great, only one cloudy day out of 7. We also hired a car so we could travel around to see other places, driving easy, no busy roads. Go for it, its fine and its very reasonable.

Quiet Holiday

from sambird
We have just returned from a holiday at the Bayside Salgados. The only problems we found were that it was too far from Albufiera Old Town and anywhere else, and the restaurant was not good at all. We only dined there on the night of arrival.
The rooms were kept very clean and tidy. It did cost too much for a taxi at night time into town, but we found a good hotel for meals which was about 20 minutes walk from Bayside. Also the bakers on the corner was excellent value for money. You need to budget for the airport transfers and negotiate a good price otherwise it could cost you 60 euros one way. Also budget for the taxis into Albufiera at night time, about 20 euros return, which is very expensive.
Otherwise we had a fantastic holiday.

I Should Have Read Reviws First

I BOOKED then 2 days before departure read reviews...some people expect too much i thought and i am easy going itll be fine WAS I WRONG beatifully landscaped/ the appartments stand in the middle of scrubland miles from shops bars ect appartments are tiny ...our walls were covered with swatted mossies thousands of em no one attempted to clean kettle ...sparse cooking items ...2 electric rings no settee or chair had to use garden table and chairs everyone not just me...any entertainment tonight ... no maybe tomorrow the reply ....went for meal 8.50 sorry closed ....gates in fence kept locked so i was parked 10 yds from my appartment but had to drag cases 150 yds to entry and back down inside of fence 150 yds to appartment older folk were shattered coudnt hire room on last day ..out 10am didnt fly till 11 pm honestl if your on the run from police go there theyll never find you but for a holiday avoid like the plague OH SORRY the beach if you find it .... is very clean ......if only because you need royal marine endurance training to reach it let alone sit on it i really dont want to end without saying something nice so weather was great

Bad experience

from Janineamy
First of all we stayed in one of the privately owned appartments that make use of the Salgados Bayside resort facilities and adjoin the reception. the property was rented to us from Portugal Haven a travel company in Portugal owned by Simon Moulson.

The Resort swimming pool gave my children a nasty painful rash (other children suffered the same whilst we were there). Complaints were made to the reception staff but no action was taken and staff denied that they could understand English or that other people had complained. The rooftop jacuzzi was also out of order throughout our stay.

During our stay someone entered our room (using a key that either came from the property owners or via the resort reception) and stole the safe from the wardrobe containing our passports and plane tickets! Reception staff very unfhelpful, refusing to get involved or speak to the police to translate for us when we called them until the police insisted). The appartments are obviously not secure.

There are lots of packs of stray dogs outside the front of the appartment which can be intimiidating and there is a building site closeby.

A hire car is essential but there are lots of lovely beaches and restaurants within driving distance.

All in all go to the Algarve but don't stay here. Also do not book anything through Portugal Haven, there was a lot wrong with our appartment, none of which was put right despite assurances that action would be taken..
