An Amazing time is to be had at the Alto!

from egamsgrandmom
The Alto da Colina.. is amazing! Easy to get to as well.

We arrived in Late March and flew with Sky Service Airlines from Toronto. I must say it was the quickest flight we ever had to the Algarve. We left 1 hour late, but still landed when we were supposed to! Kudos to the pilots!

We picked up our car rental and with directions provided and some of our own sleuthing prior to leaving Toronto, we were there.

When you walk in, its like a dream. A huge atrium which opens to the 4th floor (which actually is the 5th) The colours are breathtaking, modern and eye opening. It carries it's way to the rooms too. There is a large light fixture resembling a shower with water droplets. This changes colours at night. Such a smart idea!

The resourcefullness of the Portuguese is pretty apparent. The elevator on the east side has glass on one-side. Here it gives you an amazing view of Albufeira, which is spectacular at night. Just a wonderful idea, instead of looking at a mirror of yourself. (which there is one on the panel side) you let the natural light in. To have the electricty run in your room, you must use your card key. Excellent idea. Only the fridge works on its own.

The kitchen is a dream. Because were were there for 21 nights, and did a lot of our own cooking, we did only find one issue with the apartment. A small fridge was not enough for our groceries.. It could have been a bit more larger but we made due with it. I guess many people eat out more and just store drinks. But that is a very small issue.

There is no oven but all suites have a microwave. and a glass cooktop! I was shocked at the quality of the appliances.

We had a corner unit, which had an awesome seaview and faced the south, south west and south east. We paid a reasonable amount for this upgrade (4 euros per day at the time) I miss that apartment so much.

Since we went in late March, it was quiet. There was no Club activities for children, (which didn't affect us) but we didn't get any activities in the bar until the second and last week of our holiday. But we understand why they cut back. There are activities at their sister resort, the Alfagar which we didn't attend.

As for the beach, I did notice some people taking the steps at the Alfagar which I don't suggest. You can walk or drive a bit just past the Santa Eulalia and there is a roadway on the left which you can park your car for free (at this time of the year.. good luck!) but we were ok. You can also access the beach just as you enter the Alfagar grounds as you will see a laneway on the right, which will lead you to a residential street and the path there is not as bad to go down as the steps at the Alfagar.

The bathroom has a huge tub, shower, bidet and toilet. Leave your hairdryer at home, it's not needed! (but Canadians, don't forget to bring an adaptor for other small appliances!)

We had a one bedroom unit, wonderful colours in the whole unit. There are two large beds put together to make a huge king sized one, except, of course, you can fall in between the beds! so be careful.. lol :)

We are hoping to go back next year again. We had an amazing time at the Alto and agree by far it was the best resort we've ever stayed at in the Algarve. Previously we've stayed at Vitors Plaza (April 2005) and The Montechoro Beach Club, (October 1993)which has actually changed owners recently. Both these are also good.

Please contact me at for any information on the Algarve or this hotel. Happy Travels to all!

Great Complex

from bballer2
Just back a week from this Apartment and have to say it is a top class facility
There were 7 in our party - 5 adults from 36 - 76 and 2 children aged 7 and 11.
Every single one of us had a super holiday.
The Apartments were very modern and spacious - T.V. has ITV 3, Cbeebies and Sky Sports 1.

The pool area is enormous and there was never a day that you could not get a sunbed - and that was at 10am in the morning. The additional pool and kids splash pool to the front of the complex is an added bouns. Food from the bar is ok but can be somewhat slow. This is compensated though by the manner of all the staff in the hotel. We ate in the restaurant another night - which was good and away from the bar - which can be quite noisy at night.
The Kids Club is the best I gave seen - the younger ones up to age 8 have their own wooden house area and the 9 - 15 year olds have their own play room where they play Playsatation, pool and watch DVD's. Kids can be kept occupied for up to 5 hours a day.
Also have swimmimg lessons - instructor Steve is great with the kids.
Only drawback is the distance to the Strip and the Beach. With very young or elderly it is a bit of a trek - about 20 minutes. Would recommed accessing the Beach St Eulalia on the road rather than through the Algafar Hotel - quite a steep hairy climb down.
Taxis very cheap - €3.50 to bottom of strip.
Strip is nice to walk early in the night - great choice of restaurants. Would recommend Portofino's
Erins Isle Pub is also a good pub - in Montechoro at the top of the strip - great food and very spacious.
Alto de Colina is a complex I will be going back to.

Loved it

from ang-c
We went to Alto da colina last June for their first season opening. Our children were then aged 3 & 5, and they had an absolute ball with the kids club, swimming lessons, beach within walking distance and nightly kids discos. We loved it so much, we are going again this June! Only one small problem, we paid for a few meals in the resort with credit cards which didn't appear on our statements for almost 6 months - we would strongly recommend paynig cash this year to avoid any such repeat performance!!!

Food was brilliant, especially in the A La Carte restaurant - and we thought it was competeitive prices (once you take into consideration taxi fares there and back to the strip).

This year we will be making a visit straight away to the large supermarket to stock up on basic foods as we also found the supermarket on site very expensive.

Fantastic destination for anybody with small children - at the end of the day if the kids are happy, you can kick back and relax!!

Great Accomodation

We have just returned from a week at the resort with our three young children. Would agree that the rooms are big, spacious and well appointed. The aparthotel is in a quieter location which suited us. However, it is a reasonably short walk to the beach and only 4 euros by taxi to Alberferia and only 12 euros to Vilamora.
We were very surprised by how quiet the resort was considering it was the Easter holidays. Apparently the kids clubs do not start until the 1st May and even the water park area was closed despite the weather being terrific. This was disappointing as was the lack of entertainment at night.
We spent alot if time at the sister Hotel Alfagar across the road. Thought their play area was better and we were able to keep an eye an the kids while we had lunch.
The beach is fab. Would recommend trying the Atlantico restaurant on the beach, it is lovely and reasonably priced.
Food at club alto is ok but not as reasonably priced as other restaurants. Found the onsite mini marked over priced.
Overall, throughly enjoyed this holiday and would recommend to anyone.

We had an 11 night stay booked through First Choice at this Apart-Hotel. The rooms were excellent, very spacious and had every facility you could wish for when self catering. The rooms were kept spotless and the staff very friendly and helpful. Lovely pools although this time of year outside pools too cold. Indoor pool and jacuzzi more than compensated for this though. Even in March came back with a lovely tan!Would advise booking a car unless you are very fit and enjoy a lot of walking. Beaches of St Eulalia nearby very pretty and you can park car right next to beach. Alhos de Agua picturesque with nice bars and restaurants etc. A very relaxing holiday especially off season. Apparently gets very crowded in Albufeira in summer months. Excellent choice and cannot say enough good things about hotel. Buy a phone card over there for about 5 euros and use this as it is the cheapest way to phone home.

lovely hotel shame about the weather

We have just got back from the alto da colina, the hotel is lovely, the rooms spacious, even for us sharing with 2 teenagers on sofabeds. the staff are friendly and helpful.

We were worried that the indoor pool would be too cold to use, but once in it was okay and quiet - we often had it to ourselves or with only a few others. the outdoor pools were attractive and enticing, but far too cold to swim in!

Criticisms would be that we had to pay 18 euros to rent a tennis court which i felt should have been free to guests. You also have to pay 30 euros deposit for the TV remote control. Tv channels were better than we expected cbeebies during the day and BBC1 and ITV3 at night plus BBC2 wales. In addition to Sky news CNN and Portuguese channels.

The weather was disspointing, sunshine and showers most days with a cool atlantic breeze, but positively wintery on a couple of days with howling gales and driving rain, so don't pack mostly shorts as we did!! overall though the weather is better than UK.

We had a good time and would go back but maybe at easter when the weather was a bit warmer and there is more going on, it was very quiet, dead in places with most bars and shops shut for the winter.

Great Value for money

Just returned from nine-day stay at the Alto Da Colina on the Algarve. We travelled by EasyJet, pre-booked car and were met at airport and booked hotel ourselves.

Hotel is very modern and clean. We had two-bedroomed apartment which cost around £32 a night and slept six. Large living room/dining area and kitchen and two good-sized double bedrooms. Bath with shower. Two balconies with tables and chairs. Maids came every day bar Sunday and there were clean towels each day.

Views of the sea, but it is on a hill and a fair distance from the beach.

Too cold for outside pools - but indoor pool was warm and clean. There are changing rooms and showers.

It was February so the hotel was very quiet and the children's clubs weren't in operation. Restaurant was shut, but bar did serve food till about 10.30pm and the price was reasonable.

I can imagine in the summer it is a great place for families, but not so hot if you fancy a wild time.

You do need a car if you stay here as it is about a 20 min walk to restaurants and shops - fine for adults, but not so great if you have children. It also gives you a chance to explore and find "the real Portugal".

There is a lot of building work going on, hotels and apartments so you have to choose where you stay very carefully as you could end up in a concrete jungle, a long way from the beach.

Lovely beaches, very sandy, few pebbles and very clean.

Make sure you pick up one of the free info maps which have a guide to restaurants and stores. Fantastic bakery just off the strip and some excellent restaurants just off the beaten track.

Albufiera old town was literally a sea of mud as the main square and surroundings streets are being repaved
and are tricky to negotiate.

We visited the karting at Alamancil and Zoomarine which the 6 & 7 yr old loved. Although quite small in relation to UK theme parks, it has plenty to occupy for a day. We returned to swim with dolphins - £80 each - but it was a once in a lifetime experience and we have great photos and a CD to prove it.

Would stay in this aparthotel again as room facilities are very good.

Fantastic Accomodation

Arrived October 8th 2005. The hotel itself is fabulous, very spacious and well equipped. As it rained for 5 out of 7 days (no rain for them for 2 years) we spent a lot of time indoors. I have to say it caters more for families with small kids, my "kids" are 17 and 19!! There are reps on site all day, with a creche and kids club. The reps were excellant at rallying the smaller kids round for activities. On one of our 2 sunny days we had a BBQ, at 17.50 euro each, it was a bit disappointing. I totally agree with a previous review, the food in the restaurant was very bland. So bland in fact we went there once only and left the food, only to have it bagged up for takeaway!! The rooms were kept spotless, maid service everyday. Night out on the "Strip" was 3 euros by taxi, 1 euro to order it.
The sauna and steam room are kept locked by one key only, someone had forgotten to return the key so no one else could get in!! Perhaps they should incorporate it with your room swipe card. The bar meals were ok, but not a great deal to choose from.
Entertainment ok at night, if not a little cheesy. I can definately recommend you take the Jeep Safari trip, 40 euros each but a great day out with "The Dream Team Drivers" led y "Chicken George". Our driver was Eric Clapton!! Hotel on a steep hill so not for the faint hearted. Would definately consider going again, especially if we could get down to gorgeous beach in the sun, not quite the same in the rain!!

great hotel

Myself and my husband spent a week at the Hotel Alto Da Colina. We found it very friendly and helpful. The first choice reps are there when ever you need them and go right out of there way to help.
My advice is if you love Dolphins then please try the ZooMarine you can interact with the dolphins well worth doing loved every minute of it even if you are unsure of the dolphins still try they are so friendly.
Also go on the Jeep Safari thats another great day out the drivers are so funny and make your day special.
The Old Town is fab but you must go there at night first then you will see the difference when you revisit the place during the day.You get a taxi there and back that will cost you roughly about 5euro,s each way.Advice if you have small children get the bus from the hotel its free to the beach they collect you to.Its only a 20 minute walk but coming back its a hard hill to walk up believe me i did it...If you go i do hope you have a great holiday just like we did.We are going back next year with some family...Have fun...Denise xx
