Great Alfagr

from kath1804
We have just returned from a last minute break to the Alfagar and would most definitely go back again. Booked this through Club la Costa who have just got involved with the Alfagar and were offering great deals.
We were allocated a 3 bed top floor apt which had 2 balconies, one of which was huge, with table, chairs and loungers and still room to move, and what a view! The interiors were fully equipped with whatever would be required, tho we didn't use much other than the fridge and the kettle. The onsite supermarket had a great range and was surprisingly very fairly priced. We ate in the bar a couple of times, great value for money again. Initially, the only downside was the location, but after getting out bearings right, it was a nice walk of about 15 mins or so up to the strip.
Another bonus was the great weather, we were not expecting it to be so hot, but the weather was great for the time of the year, although pools were still very cold, did manage to brave it but only for a dip, though my daughter braved it out for quite some time. All staff were extremely helpful, and will most likely go back some time in the future.

Great Resort, Poorly maintained toddlers playground

from circus_eve
We have just returned from the Alfagar and had a wonderful holiday at the Alfagar. The complex is beautiful with great views of the sea (we had a room with a sea view). Three swimming pools which are very clean, the apartments our spotless clean. Onsite facilities fantastic; everything you need. Not bad for a 3* rating. However,

Our only concern was the young childrens playground. We had our small children with us (toddlers). Some of the equipment was broken and unsafe; broken swings, wonky steps on the playframes, poorly maintained, Glasses were often left around from the day/night before. The playground was not fenced in, our two year old often went wondering up the path (which leads straight on to a busy main road!) quite shocking really! This is obviously something the alfagar management do not consider important, and with the dogs hanging around aswell was quite frightening for our little ones. We gave our feedback though.

The hotels dogs and cats were a nuisance which appeared to belong to the cleaners or the owners. Probably would go back again but not in a rush. Hope this is helpful

great place

Had a great time at Alfagar, rooms, grounds and all 3 pools very clean and tidy, reception staff very helpful. Would go back if I was to visit Algarve again.

We stayed at the Alfagar Apartments in Portugal the first two weeks of the summer holidays 2006. Flights via First Choice excellent, booking in at Manchester and then transfer in Portugal all on time - First Choice were First Class.
The complex upon arrival very good, nice location near the beach, clean and tidy, apartment itself very roomy and clean.
Weather first class, pools clean, beach good, water cold.
The restaurant on site was very good and this was a saving grace as complex proved very difficult to get away from.
When we tried to leave the complex to visit either the strip or the Old Town (favourite) we then found the problems started. We were a 10 min drive away from the old town and a good 30 minute walk from the strip, does not sound far but in the extreme heat walking anywhere was hard work.
When asking for a taxi to take us from the apartments to the Old Town we usually had to wait at minimum 30 mins, if lucky, and this was if they came at all. It then transpired that the whole resort only had approx 80 taxis serving it and you can imagine how many people wanted taxis either early evening to take them somewhere or later in evening to get back.
This was even worse when leaving the Old Town after say eleven o'clock you can imagine how may people want to get back to their complex - the resulted in queues of approx 150/200 people waiting for taxis and this taking upto one hour.
Buses stopped at 7.30pm so this was not an option as quite often not venturing out until after this time, all in all the good points of the Alagar Apartments were spolied by the bad points of trying to go anywhere due to it's location.
In all reviews read before booking it said the entertainment was poor, this was an under statement, they were very bad. They filled all seven nights with what appeared not to be the best, even if they had only had entertainmnet on five nights a week and paid more for them it would have been a better choice. The other two nights they could simply have played background music or even quiz games in fact anything to improve generally.
The holiday was good saying all this but if asked would we go back ???????????

Lovely Alfagar

from Ronale
I just returned from a wonderful stay at the Alfagar Apartments. Having read review on tripadvisor, i was looking forward to my stay and was not disappointed.

In fact, i would say the pictures do not do it justice. We had a wonderful 1st floor apartment which over looked the cliff top pool with great sea views.

The complex is beautiful to stroll around especially at night due to its cliff top location. Everywhere was extremely clean, not one cockroach in or outside which is amazing. The maids work very hard and it is evident.

We did not spend much time at the bar, as the entertainment seemed cheesy but great for the Old English who like these things.

The location is not great for the elderly as the walk to the beach is down steep steps; however, my 78 year old gran managed the trip a few times.

We ate at the hotel restaurant which was nice. I recommend the Lamb and the Peri Peri Prawns. If you like to venture out and try local dishes i would recommend Tres Palmeras which is a 5 Euro taxi ride away. Avoid eating in tourist places such as the Strip as you pay the earth for bad quality food. Although we did have a great breakfast in the Scottish Bar

There are always down sides if you wish to look for them:

The location is out of the centre and the hotel charges 80 cents to call a taxi (you can't hail them in the street) however, the local buses stop out side the hotel and are idiot proof.

The bathrooms were in need of a refurbishment our shower broke a few times but still clean and problems were fixed when you reported them.

The service at the bar was poor, had to go up and order a few times.

However all the above were minor complaints for a great holiday. Would differently stay again!

Slightly Disappointed with the Alfagar

from RachelMiller
Having booked a late holiday to Portugal, we selected the Alfagar for our accommodation.

The location is ideal - only 20 mins by foot from 'The Strip' but we avoided this and headed down to Albufeira by taxi (5 euros each way) each night which was only a 5 minute journey.

Didn't spend much time at the beach and I would recommend the pool by the cliff top to avoid the kids!

Supermarket overpriced but convenient.

Unfortunatley, it had been raining quite badly and this meant both apartments were damp. Our first apartment also smelt badly of smoke (we're both non smokers). After 1 night, we moved to another apartment which didn't smell of smoke but still smelt of damp which could be seen on the walls.

Not all the apartments over look the sea - our faced the gardens and the kids play area. It was over the bar so not good for a light sleeper.

Staff at reception and the shop were helpful and courteous. Housekeeping were OK - can't say the apartment was spotlessly clean though!

It was the end of the season and the bar at night lacked any kind of atmosphere - the entertainment was 'dicey' to say the least! (Singer or karaoke!)

We hired a car which was great and there are loads of fantastic places to go and eat out.

The Alfagar was 'OK' but nothing spectacular. I certainly won't be revisiting.

super Alfagar

Just had the best holiday ever at the lovely Alfagar apartments in Portugal. Everything about the one bedroom apartment was excellent, nice clean room, good kitchen equipment, lots of space. Only bad point was the pullout bed which wasnt very comfortable so my advise is to have a two bedroom apartment if you all want a good nights sleep.
The pool areas were very clean, resteraunt and bar were also good, Kids loved the small arcade which had a few good video games, the park was quite good also.
The Alfagar is right on top of the cliffs and so the veiws are beautiful if you go and have a walk down to the nearby beach [about five minutes away]
The gardens surrounding the apartments are very well kept.
When we arrived at the apartments we thought we were in the middle of nowhere as there isn't anything directly outside the complex, however if you want to visit the Strip its about fifteen minutes walk away or you can get a taxi which costs about four euros[well worth it].
We really enjoyed our holiday and have just booked to go back next year.
If you want excellent accomodation in a peaceful location then this is the place for you!

3rd Visit - Still love the Alfagar

from A TripAdvisor Member
This was my 3rd visit to the Alfagar and the standards, in my opinion, are excellent. The rooms are spacious - I've only ever been with 2 people sharing though - and kept very clean by the industrious workforce employed here.
The pool areas again are immaculate and the gardens and grounds are so well maintained. The service in the snack bar is quick and efficient and there is adequete choice, especially for children. The menu in the snack bar does cater for British tastes so you'll need to get out and about to enjoy more typical Algarvian cuisine. The restuarant has a reasonable selection of meals if you are feeling lazy in the evenings but there really are some very good places to eat elsewhere so don't miss out. The entertainment in the hotel wasn't really up my street but lots of people did seem to be enjoying it.
The location is the only bugbear. It's about a 10 - 15 minute walk to the strip but there are places on the way you can stop at for a pit stop. The strip is neon hell - but there are actually some very good places to eat if you can shake off the migraine! The old town is accessible by a mini bus shuttle a couple of times a day but taxis are really very cheap.
The beach under the apartments is great - quiet and sandy.
All in all, the facilities are good for both adults and kids, clean, and the staff are friendly and helpful. I would recommend these apartments to all.
Facilities include - 3 pools, minimarket, bar, snacks, restuarant, tennis, beach, childrens play area, pool table, video games, table football, tropical gardens, car hire, reception and much more!

algarve in winter

from vfrbiker
Alfagar was as expected on reading the brochure and reviews, friendly staff, very regular maid service. Even though it is out of town the reception run a mini bus daily to and from the old town 50 cents return. my wifeand I stayed for three weeks in December 2004. the apartments are cold in the evening at this time of year, the weather was good during the day but very cold at night so prepare for this. nightly enterainment, was acceptable for a small bar. Good mullet fishing from the third cliff to the left at the bottom of the stairs. tackle shop in the old town. the refreshments in the bar was a bit over priced to some of the town bars but , at the snt Eulia Aparthotel the beer is only 1 eur a pint as opposed to 2.50 eur in alfagar. walking on the shore from alvagar to villamura or albufeira is possible watch the tides though
