private taxi We paid £100 for a taxi to Auschwitz and Birkenau thinking it a little expensive, but the driver stayed at our disposal all day, spoke great english and was very helpful, discovered that the "tour" operators were charging around £20.00 anyway for a family of four it was great value. Booked through www.krakowshuttle.com for this and the airport transfers.

Autschwitz and the Salt Mines 2 trips easily accessible from Krakow. The Auschwitz Birkenau Memorial & Museum is an entirely personal decision and one that every traveller may not wish to make. I was glad that I went and was able to see for myself the horrors of the concentration camp. No attempt is made to glamorise or 'sell' the camp. A very knowledgeable guide who lived in the surrounding village took us around the camp. I came away with a sense of dreadful feeling of horror of what man can do to fellow man. This is truly a memorial to a cause that must not be forgotten but one that must also offer hope for the future. My sister chose to visit the Salt Mines instead of Auschwitz and was able to make this journey on her own quite easily via a minibus from one of the streets off the main square. She found it fascinating and came back full of stories and photos of the amazing sculptures of churches, figures and almost a whole village made from salt.
