Top Local Tips for Krakow
when in Rome.. A pretty general tip for anywhere... but we went to a couple of restaurants recommended in our guidebook and they were not so great. Instead we followed some Polish people where they were going to eat and had much nicer food (and better prices too).
Save $$ - Go on your own to Salt Mines & Auchwitz When you ask about tours, the hotel staff will encourage you to take a package deal posted in the lobby to Salt Mines & Auschwitz (for big bucks). Best Advice: Take the local bus (small van) to the Salt Mines for around $5 as we did. (Only 2 blocks away from hotel--bus signs on van say "town name of Wieliczka" -- on Westerplatte St.; near corner of Starowisina St.). The English-speaking guides at the Salt Mines are free anyway, so why would you pay extra for one? Buy your entrance ticket at the "i" right across the street to save an hour's line at the Mines. The van felt safe and was fast (mostly locals aboard). We also walked to the bus station & took a van to Auchwitz (Signs will say "Oswiecim," not Auschwitz). It was only a couple dollars, too, and they have student rates! Both trips were each only an hour away from hotel (but in different directions).
Auschwitz and other tours. Krakow has excellent public transport that is easy to access and so I would advise anybody going there and doing a tour or even coming in from the airport to use public transport.
