Top Local Tips for Krakow

Pierogies Make sure to try the pierogies. Good, hearty, tasty food, which is dirt cheap but fills you up like nothing on earth.

Auschvitz Trip Consider hiring a taxi for the day to take you to Auschvitz and Birknau. Negotiate a fee up front to pick you up and travel to the camps and bring you back again. Most taxi drivers will wait for you all day or until you have concluded your visit. Our party of four paid about 300 Zlotys (total) and we thought this was good value as we were independent and the service is door to door etc. At the camp we paid for an English-speaking guide (we then joined a group of visitors), but this is not absoloutely necessary - you can go around by yourself (entrance is free, but you can pay a small fee to view a short cinema presentation of the camp's history). Be prepared to be shocked, surprised, upset and educated and affected by this visit - and pray that this will never happen again...

New Airport to City Train At just 6PLN pp the train takes the strain and delivers you to Krakow City Centre in just 15 mins (buy your ticket on board). Running every 30 mins, you can walk the 200m to the station (bear right out of the airort) or use the free shuttle bus from directly outside. Bus #192 is on your right as you exit and is just 2.5PLN but is obviously slower and less comfortable.
