Starting on a positive note, the reception staff was very friendly and helpful, and all spoke some English.
The bedroom I was given was a bit on the small side, but very clean with beautiful decor. The single bed was also a bit small, and not incredibly comfortable. The view from the window was horrific (back into the building - like looking into a large lift-shaft. But I chose this view as I was told the trams that passed the front of the building could be very noisy) and when the hotel bins were emptied at approximately 5 o'clock one morning the noise, that seemed to last an eternity, could have woken the dead (enough to wake a heavy sleeper through double-glazing). When I complained about the noise they just said that was when the refuse collection was made.
The buffet breakfast was not particularly appealing, with quite a limited choice that remained the same each morning. And if, like me, you leave it to the last minute to go for breakfast, expect only dregs to be left. The restaurant itself was very bright and airy, but quite small. Although I had no problem I can imagine it gets very busy.
Another thing - I was not informed that there would be a fire drill on my last morning. So, when I was trying to have a lie-in and the fire alarm went off at about 10am, I evacuated my room, walked down the 4 flights of stairs, to be casually told it was just a test.
So, after this pretty scathing review, why have I given the Stefan 7/10? The hotel is in a great location to walk into the centre of Oslo. It was clean and well decorated. I remember how lovely (some of) the reception staff was. And I got a very good deal online, so it was good value (especially given the location and how EXPENSIVE Oslo generally is!!) However, if I were to return to Oslo I think I would try the Hotel Ederkoppen where my friends stayed. It is just around the corner from the Stefan; cheaper (I think); the breakfast is marginally better (although the restaurant was completely overcrowded); it has a late night guest bar; no trams running right outside; and it has a small gym, sauna, and steam room. However, the Stefan wins on the bathrooms and decoration of the bedroom.
I hope this review has been helpful and not too confusing. Have a great trip to Norway. Despite how it sounds, I did!
