good choice

Nicely located next to RR station (airport train is literally across the street), hotel was clean, comfortable, not too pricey considering you are in Oslo. Good breakfast.

Before booking I was concerned that it wasn't in the Oslo center. But, it wasn't that far a walk and, quite frankly, Oslo center is rather so-so as European capitols go (you have to get out to Bygdoy or the countryside to appreciate the area) -- plus the metro/buses near the Thon can take you just about anywhere.

Bottom line - wouldn't go out of my way to visit Oslo (now that I've been there and seen the admittedly good museums), but if I did, I'd stay here.

Good hotel, obviously business

We stayed here because we were only staying for a night and wanted to get on the train quickly the next day. It is literally right next to the train station. It's a pleasant enough hotel but not fantastic. Rooms are small but pleasant and they are clean as well. I would stay here again, even though the place doesn't exactly ooze character.

Nice hotel - excellent location

This was a great hotel in an excellent location right next to the railway station. The standard double rooms are on the small side but otherwise ok. Staff were very pleasant, especially Marianne, the lovely waitress in the restaurant. The restaurant food was very good, and reasonably priced (for Oslo!). The buffet breakfast was varied and plentiful. One small gripe. As we were checking out at 5.30 am. for an early flight we asked for a packed breakfast to take with us. This consisted of a ham and cheese sandwich, an apple and a carton of juice. Very poor for the 110NOK charged.

Typical modern business hotel

It has a central location, the view will be better when the Opera is completed, and it is new and elegant. Just some metres away from the railway station and a short stroll from the subway and the Karl Johan avenue. Everything a business traveler wants, and for a business traveler price. Charm and ambience? Nope.

Excellent hotel

We stayed for 3 nights in May. We came via Ryanair landing at Torp Airport and got the Torpexpressen bus to Oslo bus station. This worked out fine although our advice would be to get a slightly earlier Torpexpressen bus back to the airport on your return journey if you look at the time-table on the torpexpressen website. We decided to get an earlier one leaving at 1150 for the Glasgow flight but it didn't leave till about 1220 and only arrived an hour before that flight was due to take off! - we were getting a flight at 1650 to Liverpool. We arrived at the main bus station in Oslo and the hotel was quite easy to find. You just follow the signs inside the bus station for the Railway Station, crossing a couple of bridges above the streets till you reach the Railway Station. You need to find the South Exit of the Railway Station and the hotel is just across from the taxi rank outside - all in all about 10 mins walk.

The reception was friendly and the room was fairly small but fine. The bathroom was nice with a large bath and powerful shower as mentioned by another reviewer. (The only negative thing was that the room was quite dusty in places as if it hadn't been cleaned as thoroughly as other hotels we've stayed in). We had a fairly decent view from the 5th floor down towards the square to the side of the Railway Station but I think it is just luck as not all rooms would have a good view I don't think.

The bed was very comfortable - a twin with nice full pillows for a change!

The breakfast was huge with plenty of choice in a nice room with views towards the harbour in the distance. A busy time was 8.30 to 9.30 though. There was lovely fresh bread and cheese/ham etc and hot food too - bacon, little sausages, scrambled/boiled eggs, some sort of meat balls etc.

The hotel was very well located for public transport. The jenaborgen (excuse spelling) underground stop is near the Railway Station not far from the large panther statue. Also, if anyone wants to get the bus to the island with the Viking Ship Museum, Folk Museum etc (which were excellent museums) you can take the bus number 30 from across the road from the Panther Statue outside the Railway Station (the destination on the front of the bus says Bygdoy). You can't really miss the stops with the museums - it stops at the Folk Museum first and the next stop round the corner is the Viking Ship Museum (You can walk between the 2). Otherwise you can take a ferry (10 mins crossing) from the Akerbrygge harbour but this is about 15-20 mins walk from the hotel - we got the underground to the National Theatre stop and then walked down to the harbour in about 3 or 4 mins.

Out of interest, some places seem to call this hotel the Golden Tulip Rainbow Opera Hotel and some just call it the Thon Hotel Opera. It actually says Thon Hotel Opera on the front of the hotel if you are looking for it.

We would definitely stay at this hotel again as we had no problems here and the location was excellent - lots of shops, mini supermarkets, burger/take away places to eat located within the Railway Station which was a huge complex.

Unbeatable location next to central station in the heart of Oslo.
No noise as all hotel is well soundproofed.
Superb design with high quality decor throughout.
Excellent quality food; both breakfast and dinner.
Quality of the rooms is first class, if possible get a room with a balcony overlooking the water.
Professional, well informed, highly efficent multiligual staff will do everything possible to ensure your stay is as pleasant as possible.
Good conference facilities.

Quality comes at a price.

Verdict
Top quality is never cheap but if you can afford the ~£180 per night you'll be hard pressed to find a better hotel in Oslo.

Loved the Opera!!

We stayed at this hotel for several nights while visiting Oslo from the states, and I have to say that I am some what of a "hotel snob"! This hotel is quite nice. We were booked into the standard room, and although it was small it had space for both my husband's and my luggage, the bed was to die for comfortable, and the bathroom was oversized with great water pressure in the HUGE tub/shower. The staff at the hotel went out of their way to help us with anything that we needed, and we asked many questions as we were "lost" in Norway and needed a lot of help to get around. They were never annoyed and always had a smile for us. The breakfas buffet was huge and had enough to choose from to please every appetite. The location, with being directly across from the train station and a block from Karl Johan's Gate (the main street) for shoppin and eating was ideal. I highly recommend this hotel

Luxurious, convenient hotel

What a beautiful and luxurious hotel this is! And literally right beside the train station, and about 1 block from the entrance to the famed King Carl parkway with tons of restaurants and shops and entertainment. I loved this hotel so much! Huge bathroom, large and very comfy beds. And the view! A gorgeous view of the harbor! Breakfast buffet was plentiful and very good! We stayed there for one night in early October and walked about 3 blocks to a restaurant that was wonderful and stopped to do some touristy shopping along the way. I highly recommend this hotel. You must get the SkanPlus60plus card though. It's a discount hotel card for seniors that gives you summer rates at particiapting hotels. We got the room for a bargain because of that card. No way would we be able to afford to stay at this hotel otherwise. We felt like royalty for the night.

Business Hotel ideal for short stays

Obviously a business hotel but excellent in almost all repects. Centrally situated it actually backs on to platform 19 of the Central station although we never heard a train. Spectacular entrance lobby and excellent staff all of whom speak English very well indeed. Rooms are small but well appointed. the bathroom are excellent with good power showers. being in the city centre it is ideal for the main bus terminal, railways and trams. Breakfast buffet excellent. Why not 5 star? Rooms smallish,corridors better suited to the ambience of Alcatraz, room service variable. Directions: If you arrive at Torp you will end up at the Central Bus Station. Follow signs to the Central Station (trains) and then to platform 19. The hotel backs onto this platform.

Quite simply one of the best modern hotels in europe!!

Stayed here with my partner for one weekend in December 2005 for our first trip to Oslo. We had bought our flights 'on the cheap', one of Ryanir's free flight deals. We arrived at Torp airport, which by the way is nowhere near Oslo! Its a 2 hour bus ride, so beware! But the bus stops in the centre of Oslo which is connected to Central Station.

Thon Opera is located just yards from the south exit of Central Station! We couldn't believe just how conveniently located we were for transport and sightseeing! It was perfect.

The hotel itself is impeccably clean and modern! The staff are multi-lingual which was excellent for us ignorant brits who can't speak a word of Norweigan! The hotel is a business conference hotel, so there were a lot of 'suits' staying there as well as regular tourists, so the mix of guests was good. As a guest you also have access to the gym, sauna and sunbeds! There are also ice machines on each floor.

The room we stayed in was a good size, clean and fully equipped with a minibar and snacks and a high-tech TV system with cable channels, internet access and hotel/tourist information!

The bathroom was also clean and modern with shower, hairdryer etc. With it being a conference hotel, the rooms also had a trouser press and a dry cleaning service!

Breakfast was amazing! A buffet 'help yourself'choice of hot and cold food; cereals, eggs, bacon, bread, fruit, pastries and salad.

Overall this was an excellent hotel at a very reasonable price, when everything else in the city is ridiculously expensive! (£6 for a pint of lager, £7 for a Macdonalds!).

I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone who wants to be centrally located in this nice city!

Top Local Tips for Oslo

Norwegian Folk Museum Great attraction for all the family! Over a hundred houese from all over Norway have been put into this outdoor museum to show architecture through history. Children seemed to enjoy popping in and out of the houses and it's interesting to see how people lived!

Sunset Just before sunset go to the Radisson SAS hotel beside the train- and bus-station and go up to the top floor (#34) and buy yourself a nice cocktail and watch the sun set.

Express train discounts Make sure you know kids under 15 are free and Student discount was 50% for my 19 year old
