Top Local Tips for Bergen
Bergen in a weekend If you're traveling to Bergen in the winter/spring beware of shorter business hours and wet weather. Most shops are closed on Sundays. Plan to do shopping on Saturday. Sundays are good days to hit the museums. Also note that the museums close early -- many between 2 and 4 or 5 in the afternoon.
Handsome and photogenic architecture The historic wooden buildings down by the harbor, in Bryggen, make great photo subjects. So do the big, open, wide city outdoor squares and parks. If you don't mind a bit of an uphill walk to get there, hike up from the city toward Bergen University--there's a huge red church steeple that makes a good landmark to aim for. The Natural History Museum in particular is surrounded by handsome nineteenth-century houses, painted in strong colors with dramatic white trim. I came home from Bergen with some of the best-looking photos that I've ever taken in my life.
St. Olav's Plass - Over rated Super touristy area with a ton of shopping and trinkets. Some seedy areas as well. We really enjoyed taking the self-guided walking tour suggested by our travel book. It took us to small alley's and little neighborhoods the typical tourist may miss.
