Stayed 3 nights at the end of the summer season, so the hotel was not full. We had a top floor room with a large balcony and beautiful fjord views. The modern annex where most of the rooms are located is not attractive from the outside (unlike the original hotel building) but the rooms are fairly large and comfortable. We had half board and, while the meals were perhaps a little old-fashioned, both quality and quantity could not be faulted. The waitresses were always friendly and cheerful. There was a very pleasant residents' lounge, with balcony, where coffee was available after dinner and where there were a few games e.g. scrabble, dominoes. Balestrand itself is a nice little village, and a good base for ferry/bus day trips as well as local walks. The staff in the tourist office by the quay are helpful. There are some amazing old wooden houses if you turn right outside the hotel and walk alongside the fjord. But remember to take good waterproofs - it does rain a lot!

We had a very enjoyable 6 night stay. The views from our balcony were fantastic. The staff were very helpful and always had a smile. We stayed half board and the food was excellent. A very good place to stay if you enjoy walking.

Top Local Tips for Balestrand

Don't Rush It Many of the tourists we met in The Fjord area of Norway were rushing around staying only one night in each place. It's much better though to spend longer in only a few places and explorer a bit more as that is the only way to really appreciate the amazing beauty and tranquility of the area.

Balestrand best as short visit Probably the best way to experience Balestrand is to get there earlier in the day, go on a hiking trail for a couple hours and then leave again. There is nothing else to do there. There really isn't any restaurants except in the very expensive hotel. We also went on the Glacier boat trip from Balestrand, which the boat ride was pretty, but the Glacier was a let down as it wasn't very impressive or how it looked in the brochure.

Sunday in Balestrand Plan ahead if you're visiting on a Sunday. Not much open, including the TI, so if you need ferry tickets, etc., be sure to get them on Saturday. The bakery is open part of the day, but go early if you're looking for picnic supplies - once they're out, they're out! If you plan ahead, you can truly enjoy your Sunday.
