Old Elburg is a small but interesting town, about 5 minutes walk from one end to the other, and the hotel is in the centre of the old town, not out in the modern suburbs.The building dates from 1765, and was converted to a hotel in 1979. It isn’t smart, but it is very clean and comfortable, with just 13 rooms. There is no lift, and like many of the smaller Dutch hotels, it has twisty steep stairs, so some visitors may wish to specify ground or first floor rooms. I stayed for 5 nights in one of the rooms overlooking the street, and for the first four there was little to hear but the hum of the refrigerator. On the Friday night there was a lot of noise from the bar next door, with loud music, loud voices and laughter until well after midnight. Friends in the back rooms were not disturbed by it. Breakfast was the usual Dutch style, not exciting but perfectly adequate, served in a room mocked-up to look like the gun deck of an old sailing ship. There is no restaurant in the hotel, but there are more than a dozen within a few minutes’ walk, and we were so pleased with ‘t Olde Regthuys that we ate there three times. I would like to return to Elburg, and would be very happy to stay in Hotel Elburg again.
