Cycling round Holland I was stuck for somewhere to stay in Haarlem and came across Joops Hotel. It's bang in the centre, right next to the cathedral and loads of cafes/bars. The room was large, quiet and not stuffy. It had opening windows too. The bed was firm and very comfortable. I slept very well. I was overlooking the back of the hotel. The cathedral bells provided atmosphere but didn't keep me awake. There was no bath but the shower was huge and there was a good selection of toiletries and a sewing kit. The room was lavishly decorated with an Egyptian theme. Whacky and fun. The common parts of the hotel were a bit ramshackle in places but I like that. It wasn't like a Holiday Inn that's for sure. The counter staff were very pleasant and helpful. There was a food festival on immediately outside the hotel but I ended up eating in the hotel restaurant and didn't regret it.
