Top Local Tips for Haarlem
good location If you decide to go to Europe, its ideal to start in Netherlands. From the Airport you can easily go to Haarlem by bus or taxi. By bus is very cheap. Cost you only 3.50 euro if you buy a cardticket inside terminal. the shop is called AKO. THe hotel where we were(joopshotel) is 3-5 minutes from the bus stop.(Verwulft). You can never be lost because its just in front of the biggest church. Theres so much shops around the hotel so you can buy everything you want and will need in your trip. Ask for VAT reciepts, you can claim it back in the departure hall. Do not check in your luggages before claiming back the VAT. Customs might want to see the items you bought
No Rental Cars Needed in this country Do not worry about the public transportation here... it is clean, easy, and inexpensive. This hotel is ten minutes from the Haarlem Centraal train station and from there we went to Paris, Dusseldorf, Brussels, Bruges, Amsterdam, etc., etc. We never needed a car at all. The train stations in virtually every city are located right in the middle of town and the cities are all pedestrian-friendly (watch out for the bikes).

It's bang in the centre, right next to the cathedral and loads of cafes/bars.
The room was large, quiet and not stuffy. It had opening windows too. The bed was firm and very comfortable. I slept very well.
I was overlooking the back of the hotel. The cathedral bells provided atmosphere but didn't keep me awake.
There was no bath but the shower was huge and there was a good selection of toiletries and a sewing kit.
The room was lavishly decorated with an Egyptian theme. Whacky and fun.
The common parts of the hotel were a bit ramshackle in places but I like that. It wasn't like a Holiday Inn that's for sure.
The counter staff were very pleasant and helpful.
There was a food festival on immediately outside the hotel but I ended up eating in the hotel restaurant and didn't regret it.
Maybe I got lucky because the chef was trying out a new menu. Perhaps he was inspired by the food festival. I had the pleasure of sampling mini versions of the courses destined for the new menu and can say that they were all excellent.
If you are my age it was a pleasant surprise to find the the hotel bar seems to be pick up joint for 40 year olds. Although I didn't get lucky!
I have read some very mixed reviews about this hotel elsewhere but my experience was good.
