Top Local Tips for Amsterdam

Taxis Be careful when getting a taxi. They are unregulated in Amsterdam and expensive by European terms. Unlike many countries you dont need to take the first cab in the queue and should go for the most expensive looking one instead. These are usually Mercedes and demonstrate the investment that the driver has put into his or her business (very few female drivers). There are a large number of dodgy drivers who tend to be of North African origin who dont know where places are and try to make you go in circles to increase the meter. The best thing is to find a good car, ask how much to get to your location. If the driver doesnt know the location get out and get the next car.

Bring lots of money Remember one thing about Amsterdam, you are going to pay, pay, pay. EVERYTHING costs LOTS of money here and the Euro will (at the time of me writing this) cost approximately 1.60 U.S. to buy.

follow the trams Amsterdam is the Venice of the North so there are tons of canals and small streetd. In order tp stay oriented we just followed the trams when we were off the beaten track
