Excellent location - 5 mins Dam Square, 2 mins Red Light District - but you would not know! Friendly staff; nice, clean rooms; good bathrooms, quality toiletries; (rooms a bit faded in parts; comfortable beds; attentive and non-snooty staff. Good buffet breakfast. Good rates with crestaholidays.co.uk - 3 nights for the price of 2.

Historical Traveller Reviews of Sofitel The Grand Amsterdam Hotel

Much better than expected

from A TripAdvisor Member
This was my back up hotel as Amstel and L'Europe were full. I was positively surprised of the quality of the hotel and its services as the hotel was getting bad reviews here.

The room had a high ceiling and faced a beatiful canal. Other positives were luxurious bedding, a very grand entrance with a nice lobby, a convinient location - especially if you are tourlist, and a good quality restaurant (has in-house bakery). The staff was extremely helpful, too - the conceierge was eager to help make restaurant recommendations.

Negatives are:
Upholstry needs to be updated (more than several dirty spots and color was faded), the bathroom is not exactly luxurious (relatively inexpensive tiling - some are craked, tub & shower combination with cheap light plastic shower curtin).

They could not have tried harder at the Sofitel Grand Amsterdam

from MaxBaz
Arriving in thick snow after a 10 hour rail journey from London (and unscheduled visits to Rotterdam and Utrect) we were whisked into the delights of the hotel by attentive staff. It was a family members 80th birthday and they really did their best to make this a great occaison. The ambience and location is excellent. In particular the bedrooms are opulant and quiet. The bad reports I have read on this web-site must be made up by competing hotels. Absolute rubbish.......all of them! This is a top flight hotel in a decent location with a great restaurant.

Mediocre

from deedle
Stayed here for 3 nights in a superior double. Room clean and tidy but furniture and decor looked a bit tired.

Great location though and staff very helpful.Pool and sauna area good.

Breakfast yet again very average-nothing to rave about .

Felt quite disappointed as I was expecting much better from a Sofitel Hotel.

Wouldnt return to this hotel as I found the Pulitzer far superior.

Excellent

from bobo1
We stayed here last year and found the hotel to be excellent. On a previous visit to Amsterdam we stayed at the Krasnapolsky in Dam Square which although good is not upto the standard of the Grand.

Our room was well appointed and very clean, and was not 'tired' as some other reviewers have stated.

The staff were very efficient and friendly.

If I had a critism it would be the bar prices - but that is only to be expected in a top hotel.

I would not hesitate to stay there again and would recommend it to anyone.

t understand the bad reviews

from colctrav
Stayed here for three nights in November. Upgraded to large deluxe room. Although at the front of the hotel, was very quiet, overlooking canal. Well appointed, well maintained and with no signs of wear and tear, only niggle is why can't hotels provide mineral water on other than the first night of a stay? Excellent quality toiletries. All staff were extremely welcoming and helpful, in particular the concierge and bar staff. Extensive and very good buffet breakfast served by cheerful and professional staff. Would not hesitate to return.

A 5-Star hotel... without Quality of Service

from A TripAdvisor Member
I am disappointed with my stay in this hotel. The quality of service is very weak and the client is not taken into consideration. Even if the building is beautiful, I won't go back there again. The rooms need a serious maintenance operation (and some pieces into the pool).
The staff seems to be client-oriented (fake!), but he is too arrogant. Avoid this hotel ! The quality of service is absolutely not the one of a 5-star hotel.

Dated and Expensive

from gregcmorley
I recently attended a conference held in the Sofitel, Grand Hotel, Amsterdam. The conference facilities were good but the hotel was dated, expensive and past its prime as a business location. The hotel had the feeling of a hotel that had been great 20-30 years ago. The gym was very substandard and the room was dark. While the staff was attentive, the property is in need of a serious update.

- It lives up to its name

Having read comments on trip advisor my wife and I cancelled our original hotel arrangements and stayed five nights at 'The Grand' in mid August. We were not disappointed. The public rooms are stylish and immaculately presented. Our split level room overlooked the inner courtyard and was comfortable and quiet. The staff were extremely professional, courteous, and always happy to help. They could not be faulted.
The pool area was small but quiet and relaxing after long days sightseeing. My tip- Should the weather be warm try afternoon tea in the inner courtyard. An old fashioned treat but well worth it. It's so quiet you forget you are in a busy hotel, in a bustling city only yards from Dam Square.
If you are looking for 5 star treatment on a short break try the Grand Sofitel. It lives up to its name.

Elegant 5 star hotel with the service to match!

from A TripAdvisor Member
After many disappointing hotel experiences, some in 'supposed 5 star hotels', I have to say that we loved this hotel! In my opinion, definitely worthy of its 5 star rating and providing a haven of calm in this great city. Classy and understated with traditional furnishings, informal atmosphere and excellent service by extremely professional, yet friendly staff. We had booked a deluxe room, which was very nicely appointed, but were lucky enough to be offered an upgrade to a Junior suite, for a very reasonable supplement, which was just beautiful, with three enormous windows overlooking a leafy canal and the biggest bed I've ever seen. We decided to have afternoon tea in the hotel's lounge bar, which was lovely and definitely worth indulging. We also had breakfast in the hotel's 'Cafe Roux' restaurant, which was excellent, but we didn't get the opportunity to try dinner there. With the menu created by the famous Albert Roux, the restaurant was stylish, but again understated and not too formal, which we liked. The only slight criticism may be that some of the rooms are starting to look a touch worn around the edges as it is probably a few years since the last refurb, but not enough to put me off recommending he hotel. In summary, this hotel is a bit of a hidden gem, tucked away off a leafy canal with it's imposing facade and central courtyard garden, yet only a couple of minutes walk from Dam square. We will definitely stay here again, when visiting Amsterdam next!

This is the place to stay

from ancarbone
Definitely the place to stay in Amsterdam. In the oldest channel of the city this fascinating hotel will welcome you in all its charme and quietness. At a stone's throw from the Red Light District and Dam Square, you will be able to enjoy the wonderful Dutch-styled rooms and the cuisine of Cafè Roux, the hotel's restaurant named after Albert Roux (watch out: the famous chef is only the supervisor here, he's not the executive chef). I stayed there in August and took a Superior room for 165€ including breakfast (which was a very low rate). The hotel's service of Concierge will be there to satisfy all your needs.
Astounding!
P.S. They have also great toiletries by Roger & Gallet Paris.

Top Local Tips for Amsterdam

Romantic I will recommend this hotel, 5 ton8 minutes walk from the train station. When you'll arrive in Amsterdam, buy a tram ticket right away in the train station then familiarise the place by navigating a MAP.

No car needed Use a bike for everthing its cheap and easy and will keep all the beer pounds off

A spot of lunch We found a fabulous little cafe called 'Gartine' which is a great place for lunch. All the food is home made and all of the vegetables come from their own garden. The cakes are delicous the people are so friendly it is a true haven. It is on a little narrow street that links Kalverstraat and Rokin and the steet is Taksteeg Centrum. The food is truly delicous, simple and very very reasonable.
