I never have been in Europe and through friends of mine I ended up in Hotel de Filosoof. It was a fantastic experience, the hotel was very different and the staff helped me to make my stay very special... The rooms are small but very nice decorated and the breakfast was very good!
Very nice

The hotel is in a quiet part of Amsterdam, but not too far out of the centre. It is an old large 19th terrace house converted into a hotel. The breakfast was ok, the rroms are nicely furnished. I had the following problems :
1) The first room we got was miniscule and not at all what we wanted, with two single beds rather than one double - even though I'd booked weeks in advance.
2) The rooms weren't sound-proofed: the conversions looked nice but actually were a bit tacky and cheap - thin walls.
3) The staff were obviously students - they were ok but the hotel didn't exude professionalism. That's ok but not for the price they were charging. I got the impression that the owners were minting it.
4) I really object to the fact that I couldn't get a cup of coffee at 11.30pm because the staff memeber had 'switched the machine off'. That really is not good enough.
5) I got the impression that staff took guests a bit for granted. E.g carrying out building repairs near you when you're having breakfast. Conclusion: over-hyped, over-expensive - I was drawn because I'm a philosopher - next time I'll go for a bog-standard 3 or 4 star hotel.

Top Local Tips for Amsterdam

Check for Shuttles We found a shuttle desk at the airport because we didn't want to hire a taxi and weren't sure about the train. After getting around a little, we found things a bit easier but most of the hotels provide shuttle service and even though ours didn't, we were able to manage a ride there very easily. Most everyone speaks English which was very lucky for us as we just couldn't absorb the language.

Where else in Amsterdam could one be sleeping with a philospher?! Where else in Amsterdam could one be sleeping with a philospher?! This quirky little hotel offers the warmth and hospitality of a home, beautifully decorated rooms, delicious breakfasts with the quotation of the day to inspire one... It is so conveniently located near the Rijksmuseum, yet quietly situated near the beautiful Vondelpark. We loved our stay. All best wishes, Sara Hebblethwaite

Excellent place for shopping during sales! Great prices at Foot Locker, Paul Warmer, Shoe balloo, Lifestyle and DOM. Great stuff for interior decoration and designer's apparel! Avoid touristy restaurants. Definitelly YES: Bazaar for excelent dinner in a great location, Humphrey's for its stylish decoration, Caprese for its delicious REAL italian meals!
