Horrible & Terrible

We made our stay in amsterdam shorter because we were so inconfortable staying at your hotel. It was summer, room had no ventilation facilities, impossible to breathe if window was not opened. Result: still unbearabbly hot + profusion of mosquitoes. I was stung each night, at least 10 to 15 bites per night! Horrible stay! Situation = NOISYNESS as well! TERRIBLE on weekend nights!
Well located and excellent staff

The Schiller is good value and located in the heart of Amsterdam. While the hotel shows its age here and there, the staff is exceptionally cheerful and conscientious.

Historical Traveller Reviews of Nh Schiller Hotel

Bedbugs with a good location

from NYEsq
First of all, the hotel has an amazing location (gay bars/clubs are very close by if that matters) but I woke up in the morning with insect bites down my arm and on one leg. I asked a doctor and was told it was probably bed mites or something like that. (Fortunately they went away in a day.)

The room was very quiet, and the bed actually not bad. I would have said this was above average, but for the bugs.

perfect location

from Clairy
This hotel had a great location, slap bang in the middle of everything. The hotel was clean, the staff were great, the standard of accommodation is by far superior (very comfortable beds! lovely little lounge area) and the view out onto the rembrandtplein was great. Definitely well worth its weight in gold. Beware of the mini-bar hidden in the wardrobe - the door to the mini-bar is attached to the wardrobe door and each time you open up your wardrobe, the minibar door also flies open. Try to resist the temptation - difficult if you've been smoking.

Great location, excellent value and superb location

from Looseal
We stayed at this hotel recently and it was great, the location was excellent, right on the Rembrandtplein, which has lots of bars and cafes, it was also an easy walk to most areas of Amsterdam which is really useful. The hotel rooms were very well equipped and furnished, the beds were really comfy and the bathrooms had lots of complimentary items which is always a bonus. The bath robes and slippers were a welcome suprise in a hotel of this price range, we used hotels.nl for our rate which was superb. The hotel staff were very helpful and the sweets and apples in reception were very a nice touch. It was very warm when we stayed here and there was no air-con but this was the only (small) complaint I can think of. Also we asked questions in 2 of the other NH hotels after telling them we were staying here and all of the staff were very helpful. I would definately stay here again or at any of the other Nh hotels if they are as good as this one.

Best Hotel Yet

from I_Love_Amsterdam
This was my 4th hotel that I have stayed at in Amsterdam and this one is the best so far.

Upon my arrival the girl at reception was polite, courteous, fast and efficient(she was also --- sexy). In just 4 minutes I was on my way to my room on the 4th floor.

My 1st impressions of the room were what I expected. Clean & functional. I must admit the bathroom was the best that I have had so far.

The icing on the cake was that my room overlooked the actual square.

Now I know a lot of people have made an issue of the street noise but hey compared to London this was peaceful. Ok you got the odd rumbling of the trams going past but I`m used to planes flying above my bedroom at home at night so this was no problem.

The electronic safe was brilliant. For the 1st time in Amsterdam I could leave my room with confidence that no sod could make off with my passport and credit cards.

I also liked the credit card style lock to the room so you can just come and go as you like without having to ask for your key at reception all the time.

I didn't`t use the restaurant or room service so I can`t comment on these.

As usual the PPV movies were overpriced Euro 12.50 per film is still way too much to pay.

Checking out this morning was again fast and efficient.

I will give this hotel 4.5 out of 5 stars. Euro 360 + tax for 3 nights in Amsterdam was value for money. (P.S I booked this via bookings.nl)

If I ever visit Amsterdam again I will always use this hotel from now on.

Decent hotel

from jeznfu
We thought this was a decent hotel. We stayed there in May 2005. The only (slight) downfall is the location as it is in Rembrantplein and not too near the red-light district which is around 5 to 10 minutes walk from just across from the hotel, but trams go to nearby 'the dam' every ten minutes or so, cost 1 euro 60 cents and are easy to use. From the hotel take the 4 or 9 tram with Centraal Station on it.
There were original paintings by the artist Schiller everywhere in the hotel, even the rooms.
I found that the 1920's art-deco lift was good fun to use as it was like stepping back into a 1920's gangster movie!
There was a basket of fresh juicy apples at reception which was replenished each day, as were a bowl of sweets.
A chocolate was left on your pillow each day, along with rather nice orange / lemon clear soaps / shower gels including (wait for it ladies) body lotion!!! and so on.
We paid around 100 euros for a double room per night for three nights.
Staff were great. Rooms clean, fresh, quiet, with good view across the area.
Both my wife and I were happy with this hotel and if she was happy then I was happy - apart from too much shopping nearby in the flowermarket!!

Lovely place, decent location.

We stayed at this hotel in January 2005 for two nights (thurs. & fri.) after doing extensive research and reading the reviews of many other hotels and paid 194.00 Euro for both nights. The staff is friendly enough and accomodated our early arrival. We got a decent size room with a pretty good size bathtub for euro standards. If robes aren't in the room, call the front desk and they will bring them to you. Our room was not particulary quiet but it was fine compared to New York standards and after a long day of sightseeing and being jetlagged we had no trouble sleeping. This hotel is next to a coffeeshop but there are better ones in the area if that's your cup-of-coffee. The falafel place up the street is awesome. The hotel restuarant was closed but they offered croissants with preserves with coffee/tea in the morning that was divine down in the lobby free of charge. We will probably stay in another hotel next time we go to Amsterdam only for a new experience though we had a lovely stay at nh schiller.

Nice stay at Schiller..

from LosAngelesTravel
Great location - you can walk to everything. They put me in one of their quiet, larger double rooms overlooking the courtyard area. The front desk staff was very helpful with directions, calling the shuttle, restaurant recommedations, etc. The room was nice, clean and spacious. Nice large windows for plenty of sunshine. The bathroom was a little small. The housekeeping staff was a little noisy in the morning going up and down the hall. Otherwise, no other complaints. I would recommend this hotel.

Loved the Hotel - But Beware of Crime

from A TripAdvisor Member
My friends and I loved this Hotel, until the last day. My friend had her knapsack stolen with her passport from the lobby. We are not a bunch of kids, but professional women in our 30's. My friend was waiting for the connection shuttle by herself, at 9 am on Easter Monday, after a distraction, she must have had her eyes off her suitcase and knapsack for a moment, because after that the knapsack was stolen. There are a lot of people in the hotel lobby frequently, and the security is somewhat lacking. The hotel was very helpful in accomodating my friend, who had to get a new passport and fly home the next day, due to this. They gave her a room free of charge and paid for her passport. We loved Amsterdam and are three women from New York, so we know how to conduct ourselves in a big city, but the hotel lobby of this somewhat expensive hotel is a place you should feel safe and apparently you aren't.

The Schiller Lived Up to Expectations

from travelwise
After reading many reviews on Trip Advisor, I booked the Schiller for a four-night stay. The hotel lived up to all my expectations. With a good rate from a booking site, we arrived to find our twin room ready at about 3 p.m. The room was not huge, but given the size of most European hotels, was perfectly adequate. The room looked out over the back garden so it was completely quiet and the view was pleasant.

Throughout our stay the room and the bathroom were kept perfectly clean and service was quick and friendly. When we noticed the room was chilly the first night, a floor heater was brought up immediately and certainly did the job. The beds had duvets and were extremely comfortable.

Although the room price did not include breakfast, they offered us a 25% discount to eat breakfast because of the internet booking, where breakfast wasn't an option. The terrific breakfast buffet was priced at only 12 Euros with the discount (16 without). Considering the quantify and quality, it was well worth it. If you eat at a cafe, you end up spending at least 10-12 Euros for a glass of juice, toasted sandwich and cup of coffee. Here there was all kinds of juice, tea, coffee, hot chocolate, breads, cheeses, breakfast meats, eggs, sausauge, bacon, cake, tiny pancakes... you get the idea. Oh, I almost forgot -- champagne, too!!

I loved the location -- you could walk to all central tourist sites and three trams run right by the front of the hotel on the Rembrandtplein. There are many good restaurants and cafes nearby and down the block there's an Easy Internet Cafe that is a great bargain. I would definitely stay here again.

Trip to NH Schiller (March 05)

from A TripAdvisor Member
We travelled by train from the airport to Central Station in Amsterdam. They run every 10 minutes and the fare was 3.8 Euros each. From Central Station we caught the number 4 tram from outside the tram information and ticket office. (1.6 Euros each). It took about an hour from the airport to the hotel in Rembrandt Plein square. When you get off the tram the Schiller is behind the statue, you can't miss it.

We checked in early and left our luggage behind the counter until our room was available. The hotel is comfortable and has character. Our room was on the 4th floor overlooking the square - great view. However, if you are a light sleeper you could be disturbed by the late night street noise. Ask for a higher floor or a room at the back of the hotel. The continental breakfast at 9 Euros was good value and the staff were very helpful.

Six of us travelled by taxi to the airport from outside the hotel. It took 20 minutes and only cost 20 Euros (we had been quoted 35 Euros when we booked it).

Top Local Tips for Amsterdam

Connexion bus book return at airport and get hotel to confirm the day before ... sooo easy!

airport to hotel Get a train from the airport to central station, then get a tram from outside to rembrandtplein. This saves approx 40 euros compared to a taxi.

De Bakkerswinkel For breakfast/lunch/tea and cake go to De Bakkerswinkel bakery & cafe on Warmoestraat. A little bit of heaven on a horrible street. they do the most divine sandwiches, cakes etc. Always quite busy but service is quick so you never have to wait long for a table. The hot filled rolls from the oven are to die for, the cheesecake is pretty good too.
