The breakfast is simple but filling--boiled eggs, slices of ham and cheese, several kinds of bread, OJ, milk, corn flakes (!) and a truly yummy granola, plus the usual tea, coffee and hot chocolate. The dining area can seat maybe 18 people, so you have a chance to visit with other guests. The staff was very friendly and helpful, and you can buy stamps from them. We were there for 4 nights and definitely would stay there again.

Historical Traveller Reviews of Hotel Washington
Good hotel but a little pricey
from gj47jVery well received by hotel management who take your bags to the room.
No problem with early arrival/late departure and the place is very safe.
Breakfast was a little disappointing but that was probably my fault getting the wrong impression from this website :-
Meusli the only cereal
Limited fruit bowl
Choice of egg (!) note the singular
1 slice of processed ham and one of cheese
selection of toast
We had friends meet us and take us around but if you are on your own there did seem to be plenty of brochures etc and I am sure the management would give plenty of advice
You will not be let down here but you could possibly find better value for money
Wonderful expreience

from rmartin1Comfortable and spacious apartment
from PhiljopaOur apartment was on the second floor and was huge - kitchen, lounge, dining area, bedroom and bathroom. After we'd settled in, I realised that our reservation was actually for the top floor apartment. When I queried this with the management, they were very apologetic and showed us the top floor apartment. It was much smaller than the one we had been given and to be honest ours was much nicer, though the top floor apartment did have the large roof terrace. Not much use in freezing weather and snow though!
The apartment was old fashioned but very clean and comfortable. The stairs to it were incredibly steep and not for the faint hearted! Access was via its own entrance next to the hotel.
Breakfasts were OK - bread, cheese, eggs, etc. Alright for a couple of days but no longer.
The people that ran the hotel were very friendly and helpful and spoke (of course) perfect English, as do virtually everyone that you meet in Amsterdam.
Even though the weather was freezing, we enjoyed walking round the canals. Also recommend a trip to Haarlem, the Anne Frank House and the botanical gardens (especially the butterfly house). Excellent bars and restaurants once you get off the beaten track.
All in all, an excellent trip.
Don't stay at the Washington if you want 5 star luxury. If, however, you want a small, friendly, quiet "hotel" in a very Dutch environment then give it a try.
Best Hotel Experience Ever!
from XtallTravelerHalf term treat
from rainfordThe room was very clean and spacious with 2 armchairs and a TV which has BBC 1 and 2. The breakfasts were very good and you had cereal, eggs cheese and ham with lots of lovely bread and biscuits.Amsterdam is a delightful city to walk round although it was bitter cold this week. We would recommend the Canal Bus as a great way to see the city. It is 16 Euros per person but you can hop on and off all day until 12 noon the next day. You also get an informative commentary on the history and architecture of the city.Valentines was spent looking at Gassan Diamonds polishing factory where you can view in a small room a selection of diamonds to buy or just to admire. I managed to escape without hurting my wallet but ended up buying a silver and amethyst ring nearby. So both of us were happy!!
All in all a good break at a very good hotel.
Special place
from A TripAdvisor MemberThe hotel is in a (or, rather, a couple of) ancient Amsterdam houses. This and the antique interior and the classical music give it a very special atmosphere. The stairs are however really steep. This adds to the original Amsterdam feeling (all ancient A'dam houses have those stairs) but may be a little tiresome if you return after a long day sightseeing.
Our room was fine and spacious as was the bathroom. But the best thing is the staff. All people we learned to know at the Washington were warm and helpful. E.g., they arranged to get us cards for a show which wasn't bookable at all from Germany.
All in all, we can definitely recommend Hotel Washington. We will surely stay there when we return to Amsterdam.
Going Dutch
from Annette-and-friendsAs for the hotel, the breakfast room and entrance are welcoming especially the Christmas tree (for Sinta Klaus on 5 Dec). Breakfast comprises a choice of 3 cereals, juice, tea, coffee, selection of toast, biscuits and fruit bread and your choice of egg plus ham and cheese. A hearty start to any day....
As for the room (No.3), it was impeccably clean, road facing (although it's very quiet so no problems here), however is next to the laundry room (again not a problem during our stay). The room is spacious, with two single beds, a desk, wardrobe, coffee table and 2 arm chairs. The bathroom has a tiled shower with plenty hot water! I was a little disappointed that the traditional feel of the hotel's reception areas was not continued in the room but the proximity to the centre of Amsterdam was more important for us. One cautionary note: watch the steep stairs for anyone with walking difficulties!
The owners are very welcoming and helpful with recommendations and advice.
I would personally recommend a visit to Anne Franks House, The Pancake Factory, Coster Diamonds (free tour), a Candlelight canal tour ("Lovers" at Amsterdam Central) - much better than a daylight tour when it's preferable to walk everywhere and a trip to Begijnhof (to see the "hidden" church).
Overall, recommended as a preferable alternative to the large chain hotels...a lovely Dutch experience...
Lovely hotel (but ask for top floor...)
from A TripAdvisor MemberFabulous hotel, reasonably priced
from A TripAdvisor MemberIt's situated in a great location, in the heart of the museum area. It's also very close to an up and coming restaurant/ bistro area of the city. Our room was huge - one of the biggest in the hotel, with a bathroom to match. It was impeccably clean. Breakfasts were smashing, and the hosts were extremely kind and helpful. Highly recommend this hotel!!!!
Top Local Tips for Amsterdam
Trams Trams are the best way to get around Amsterdam. Make sure to get familiar with the routes and ticketing system as soon as you get there and save your feet some pain!
Anne Frank house If you're going to the Anne Frank House, book your ticket at least a day in advance (you can do this at tourist information at Central Station) as the queues are extremely long. You will be allocated a time and you can by pass the queues.
Wrong date on tram/bus tickets We bought 24 hour tram/bus tickets on a busy tram and didn't check the date stamp. When we tried to use it again later same day (the day we arrived!) we had to pay again as the tickets were 2 days out of date. As we bought them at lunchtime I am sure they hadn't forgotten to change date from 2 days before so check your tickets carefully. A nice little earner if they can get away with it
