Nice decor and super garden

The hotel is completely renovated and we stayed in a nice and spacious room with new bathroom and really good beds - the decor was nice and new, the lobby is nice as well and the location is just perfect - the garden, just opened, is the best I have ever seen. I would go back to the new Vondel

The staff was reasonably friendly. The hotel was undergoing a rather extensive renovation which was a huge inconvienience to say the least!! Loud power tools from 8 am till 8 pm everyday; dust and scafolding everywhere... You had to go OUTSIDE to get to the breakfast room several "ajoined" houses down the street!! No, I was not going to take a small, compact room for 175 dollars per night,prepaid, under such conditions. I demanded an upgrade which I got...Room #72 which was facing the garden in the back of the hotel....It would have been beautifully quiet and serene if there was no renovation going on...The room had no hooks to hang up your clothes or damp towels...No air conditioning and Amsterdam was experiencing a hot/humid spell! No screens on the windows which allowed some unwanted bugs when attempting to cool the room at night... it will be pretty nice when completed in the Fall of 2005...

I have visited Amsterdam many times and stayed in different places. This hotel has the best location, it is so worth to try.

Hotel was clean and had a modern, up-to-date feel. Staff was moderately friendly. Location was good. I would recommend it to friends.

The room I was allocated, #75 was too small & nothing like the photo on all the web sites. Barely room to walk around the bed. No soundproofing meant you could hear conversations in the next room. Not what I expected for a 4 star hotel.

My husband and i stayed here for 4 nights at the beginning of december. The hotel is on a quiet side street which can be a relief from the hussel of the trams, cars and bikes. That is until 6am when catering van turns up with the breakfast deliveries, it was like sleeping above a shipping yard!!

All of the staff were very friendly but i was not impressed with the standard of the hotel. The hallways were dirty and often flled with piles of dirty sheets and the rooms were tiny. there was a wardrobe and a double bed in the room(it would have been impossible to fit anything else in)

the bathrooms were equally as small and if 1 person was in there then you couldnt open the door in fear of knocking them out.


The carpet was stained, the sink was badly cracked, the walls were heavly scuffed. This was not a 4* hotel. I have stayed in better 2 star accomodation.


If you are looking for a central place to stay near plenty of bars and shops then this would be all you need. If you are looking for a luxery hotel then don't bother.

Quite nice but not 4 star

Just returned from a 2 night stay with partner and another couple. The staff were quite friendly and helpful but find it hard to see how this has been rated a 4 star hotel. The rooms were clean but very small. Our double room had no drawer space, only a wardrobe and although it had internet access we thought tea and coffee making facilities would have been preferable. I think this is geared more towards businessmen than tourists. On the positive side the breakfast was very good and plentiful and the turkish bar tender very helpful and friendly.
The location was nice and quite if a bit remote.

Bad experience

It was our first time in Amsterdam and have been looking for a small, cozy well located hotel. We made the reservation via the internet for Vondel Hotel 3 weeks prior to our arrival. When we got there, and after waiting for a long time (after a 17 hours trip) we were offered to stay in 2 separate bedrooms which was not what my husband and I had booked. We insited on the room with matrimony bed and were given the smallest, dirtiest room on the basement. We did not like the room and we did not like the hotel itself, and as the personal treatment was as lousy as the room we decided to find another hotel. Even if we showed up and decided not to stay because we did not like the place we were charged for one night. We stayed at the Marriott (around the corner) and had the best possible stay in Amsterdam. Please don't go to the Vondel.... still trying to understand why they have 4 starts!

A medicore experience!

Recently spent a few nights in Amsterdam, staying at the Hotel Vondel.
The hotel is situated in a great location, as accessing tourist attractions, shopping locations and city transport is very easy & close.

However, a truely hospitable experience, it was not, especially as the hotel is gradeded as "four star" accommadation!

The staff were overall efficient, though waiting over 5 minutes for a staff member to arrive at the reception desk on my arrival did create a poor impression.

The rooms are extremely small, with dated decor, furniture and appreared poorly maintained overall i.e. cracked paint along walls in the corridors/room.
My bathroom though functional was not properly cleaned from the previous guest and the wall tiles around the bath were cracked, while the bath lining was chafted, unsightly, hence, very unappealing.

Though the hotel is situated on a pleasaant street, hotel rooms at the front of the building are bombarded with noise. Air conditioning was not included, hence the necessity to open windows. This increased the road noise by decibels. Not the most appropriate morning call after a night on the town!

The bar is an extremely confortable area for a drink. Be warned though. The measures of spirits are poor and the prices are astronomical (I was charged €21 for 2 gin & tonics). Much better value is readily available in nearby pubs/hotels.

Overall rating: A poor 3 out of 10 & most certainly, NOT a four star hotel as it purports to be.

Would I return? Honestly no!

My husband and I stayed for 3 nights in June 2004. First appearances were not good as the carpet on the entry stairs was worn and dirty. The reception staff were efficient, if perfunctory, and it was quite a problem getting all our luggage back out of the entrance and down the street to another building and into a tiny lift to our room. The walls and carpets of the corridors were decidedly worn and in need of cleaning, replacing or painting. Our room was well fitted out, though fairly small, but the bathroom was perfectly clean and a good size. Terrible view from our window. However, when we had a problem with laundry not being dealt with, they washed it themselves on a Sunday, at no charge, and left us a bottle of wine in our room. All in all a mixed experience, but we would probably go back - though I would not say it was 4 star.

Had a good stay at this hotel, resonable prices...rooms a little on the small size but the location is ideal. Staff are really friendly and like most Dutch, speak exceptional english. Overall not a bad choice to stay in one of the greatest cities in the world.

okay, but...

I stayed at the Vondel Hotel with my Family. We took the cheaper rooms, but they were reeeally small. I mean, tiny!!! They crammed all the furniture in and you didn´t know where to put your luggage. One night the radiator was broken, it was a hell of a noise and you couldn`t get a good night sleep. It was fixed the next day though. I liked the style of the lobby and of the rooms, but the seat-and bed covers had some disgusting stains and marks on them, which I found gross. Location was good, but I think, the rooms were just not worth the price.

Fawlty Towers

This is a funny hotel. I guess whoever called it 'a boutique hotel' meant that reception is understaffed, so the receptionist keeps trying to juggle between guests, that it is actually made of 3 residential buildings put together, so you keep going in and out of doors and have rooms squeezed into all kinds of funny places, and that the elevator is small, and sometimes not working, so you can have the pleasure of climbing 4 floors up or down the narrow and steep stairs with all your luggage.

More practically speaking, whether you laugh or cry at Hotel Vondel - or as we called it, Fawlty Towers - depends on the room you get. After specifically asking for a large room, we were offered what was not much more then a bed surrounded by walls. I honestly thought it was a single room when I saw it. The next day we asked to change, and got a much better room which was bigger, nicer and actually had room to walk around without tripping over the luggage or the bed.

The staff was ok, it seemed like they were used to the routine - ok, let's deal with all the guys who got the crappy rooms yesterday, and give those rooms to new arrivals... After all, there's one born every minute, right?

On the positive side, the hotel is very quiet, well located (although not ideal, just a tiny bit too far from the center), and the second room was definitely good enough. Amsterdam was great and nothing could put a dent in this sunny May weekend. Next time though, I will try another hotel.

Good value for your money!!

Last weekend we stayed at the Hotel Vondel right in the center of Amsterdam and we enjoyed our stay very much. The location is really great, most interesting things are in walking distance. The staff was more than pleasant and helpful. They even gave us some interesting hints, when we were having a drink at the cosy bar. The room was spacious and lovely decorated in light modern colors. And we thoroughly enjoyed the breakfast before starting our day in this vibrant city.

If you do not wish to stay in one of the big unpersonal chain hotels, I fully recommend this alternative. The service is more individual and better, you genuinly feel at home here. It really makes a difference to your stay in this wonderful city.

Top Local Tips for Amsterdam

Don't take a taxi unless you're loaded! Take the tram from central station - No 1, 2 or 5 to Leidesplein, head towards the Marriot hotel and the Vondel hotel is a few minutes walk.

Go here "Grey Area"

Club Eleven (elf) I only went here cos my friend lives there and knows it - it is off the tourist scene - go out of the central station towards the harbour, but you will beed to ask people as it is quite hard to find and looks very strange from the outside but it is fantastic. AMAZING food, great view, dancing after - need to book in advance. Also, despite being a lot better, it is probably actually cheaper than many of the tourist restaurants!
