convenient trams Tram routes 1,2 or 5 will each take you directly from Centraal Station to the Liedseplein, from where Hotel Hestia is within fairly easy walking distance

Canals & 'Pasta e Basta' DEFINITELY take a canal bus trip - there are many companies, but we used the actual 'Canal Bus' one. Not only does it help you get your bearings, it is definitely the best way to see the most picturesque parts of the city. Amsterdam really is best viewed from the canals. Also, don't miss out on a wander around the canals at night - they are all lit up and it is very pretty (and romantic if you're with your boyf/girlf. If you can afford a bit of a splurge one night, the restaurant 'Pasta e Basta' (www.pastaebasta.nl) is definitely worth a visit. The interior is lovely, very classy with a 'loungey' sort of feel, the food is fantastic, and here's the main thing - you get entertained while you eat ! - The waiters and waitresses take turns singing opera, or whatever tune they fancy and the quality of the singing easily rivals that of a WestEnd show in London. We also found a really lovely canal-side, Peruvian restaurant with delicious&unique meals on the corner of Prinsengracht&Leidsestraat

Van Gogh Museum Invest in the audio tour - only a few euros extra and absolutely excellent - really informative, offers a fantastic insight into the Artist's life, works and state of mind - fascinating! Also aim to arrive early morning to avoid big queues.
