beware of the damp!

This holtel is poor standard as the rooms are very damp and the heater in our first room didn't work so we were freezing in December. We ended up moving room 4 times in one weekend! The rooms are damp and smell of mould, the window latch was broken so it kept flying open in the middle of the night and the pay as you go tv didn't work because it was raining! quite far from main centre ewg.Dam Square. The trams offer a good cheap service into town though,cost about 3 euros each way.The only good thing was the take away food in the lobby and the staff were nice. If you stay on the fourth or fifith floor it resembles a prison! seriously does.If it wasn't for the coffee shops we would have come home on the first day!!!

Nice... but a bridge too far

I stayed at this Hotel in November 2004, my and I boyfriend got a good last minute deal to Amsterdam but the down side was the distance of the Hotel it was located in the back of beyond. We seemed to have travelled for ages by the time we got there on the tram from Central Amsterdam and it was a nightmare to find in the dark... but the rooms were nice and clean, the heating was a bit "pants" though.
The staff were nice and helpful and the vending machine was TERRIFIC for those late night munchies.

The cab fare from there into central Amsterdam was about 10 Euros.

Would I stay there again... YES!!! well now that I know were it is.

This hotel was ideal for my partner and I. As a gay couple we appreciated the quiet, friendly, efficient and unassuming assistance given by all the staff who we came into contact with.

The hotel is a bit of a distance from the main city-centre but this gave us a unique view of the city and its suburbs. The hotel is situated near a tram stop on the number 2 route to Nieuw Sloten. We would advise people to get off the tram at Westlandgracht: Not the stop advised by the hotel. All you need to do at that stop when you alight is to turn left off the tram continue over the bridge, take the first left and the hotel is two minutes walk down a side-street. Along this street you will pass a church on your right, a school on your left and then turn right at the fire station (Brandweer) and the hotel gates are the first on the right!

We have also caught the Metro from the nearest station Amsterdam Heemstede Straat to the airport Amsterdam Schiphol. This was 10mins walk away, even with luggage, and it took 20mins including a change at Lelyln.

For the most economical way to get around the city we suggest that you purchase a travel card (uurskaart) from the travel information office outside Centraal Station. We bought two 72hr passes for Eur 13,00 each! This card includes all trams, city busses and the entire metro system. This made our return journey to the airport cheap at Eur 2,50 because we only needed a ticket from Lelyln. Far cheaper than Eur 20,00 taxi!

There is also a fantastic shopping centre right next-door to the hotel. Literally 1.30mins walk away. Just walk out of the hotel gates turn right, through the underpass and veer right and the best of local amenities are on offer: two restaurants, one of them a Chinese (this is alive and running despite reviewers on other websites!), there are also two large supermarkets, bars, a hardware store and lots of others. Ideal for the budget traveller!

Our room was basic but very clean and our friendly chambermaid kept it smart for us. He was very friendly and unobtrusive! The breakfast was a veritable banquet of loveliness... outstanding choice and flavours... enough to kick-start the morning.

The whole hotel has the air of quality but at a reasonable rate. We think that the hotel management have been very discerning in catering for those looking for budget accommodation.

We would recommend it to any type of couple, group of friends, families and even the discerning managing director looking for a nice place for their annual company congress, conference or training facility.

Amsterdam is great city the HEM Amsterdam is a great hotel... we will be back!

Not 3* Barely 1*

If this "hotel" is 3* i would like to see what a 2* was! I was in tears when i saw my room and seriously considered going home. The room we stayed in was barely big enough for two, and when you consider we booked a triple room this was pretty bad. The room consisted of two tiny single beds, pushed togther, and a fold out bed for the third person. The light also did not work and when we complained we were told to take it up with the website!

The "bathroom" was by far the biggest drawback, not only was there no seperate section for the shower so everything got soaked, the shower itself was barely able to dribble water out of it. The tiled floor was also not a great idea as was dangerous when wet and freezing cold.

We hardly had any sleep the nights we stayed because of parties and loud music, and the it was quite a walk to the tram stop which wasnt fun in the rain.

Having saying that we did have a great weekend, but that was due to Amsterdam, definately not the HEM hotel.

brilliant holiday

went to the hem hotel feb 05 and when we first got there thought it was a bit far away but once we realised how easy the trams were quite enjoyed the journey into the town as you got to see more than just the main centre. rooms were ok could of done with a tea and coffee maker in room but bar stays open late and opens early also taxis outside which are great so you dont have to walk far to a rank. best thing about this hotel are the staff one barman in particular made our holiday and this hotel would definetely be worth going back to just to see him.go to the sea palace chinese on the water. expensive but well worth it.

An average hotel.

Not a bad hotel. We stayed in this hotel June '04. They gave us a room with 4 single beds, for only 2 of us, which was not airconditioned as promised. The most annoying thing about this hotel was it was not really close to anything. There was a small plaza with a few shops and restaurants about a 10 min walk away. Steakhouse was very overpriced. Chinese reataurant was closed down. I would probably stay in a different hotel next time.

Fair price for a good base

I was well satisfied with the hotel, pleasant & helpful staff, clean rooms (maybe a little in need of refurbishment) good, well priced food. The short walk to the tram is pleasant if you walk up the side of the water and if you walk about a block in the other direction you'll find a shopping plaza wherein sits an excellent Chinese Restaurant - really good Chinese cuisine at a good price.

An odd, but okay place

My family stayed in this hotel as part of a tour. I do not know how much we paid. Among the group, each room seemed to be different. Some were small with a cot as the third bed; other rooms were large with 3 nice single beds in them. Some of the bathrooms were awkward, but all worked well. The breakfast was the best we had all week. It was a very nice buffet. The hotel was not the best we've stayed in, but it was fine for a couple of nights. You have to walk about 2 blocks to the tram. It's very convenient to the Van Gogh and Rembrandt museums.

It was my first time out the country, was well impressed with the hotel... wasn't 5 star but the price is far from 5 star... well worth every penny, plan on returning in APRIL 04... thats what im looking for right now. Staff was very helpfull... The waitress was a bit more than helpful with my other half... but this is well worth it. The only down fall is that it if a little way from the city centre, so u do have to make sure u dont miss last tram back... From tram to hotel, about a 5 minute walk... Very diverse area,,, :) I advise u 2 get a travel pass at the airport it saves money, also try to get a transfer from airport to hotel, rather than taxi... it will save u half the money and takes u str8 in!! any more info, email me

As someone said before the owners have employed a clever photographer as it did not resemble what we actually saw.We stayed in an extention which looked as if it had been built from Porta cabins.To get the room you had to walk down a long narrow hallway which seemed suspended.You could see into other rooms from the hallway.The room we got was warm and reasonably comfortable.What spoiled it for us were the scruffy and noisy individuals who were obviously there for the drugs,booze and sex.It was a fair bit out of the town but not half an hour by tram ,more like 15 - 20 minutes.Everthing was expensive.

The tram stop is 5 minutes away, but taking it all the way to Central Station takes about 30 minutes. We asked for non-smoking rooms, and I got one with ashes still in the ash tray. The staff is surly (one member started shouting at another customer while helping me) and the rooms are in shabby condition. (I'd like to hire their photographer -- he's a genius.) There are two room sizes; in one wing (rooms in the range x00 - x16, approximately) have bathrooms so small it's hard to imagine. (Ok, imagine a toilet which is literally overlapped by a sink.) The shower heads are so gunked with mineral deposits that they sent water in two directions, but not straight down. (True in my room and my colleague's.)

A business associate stayed in the other wing -- he got the bigger bathroom, and would have had a similar room, except that he was in room x35, where the room was chopped to make space for a hallway. (You can see this clearly on the floorplan on the back of the room doors.) You could almost touch both walls at the same time.

The fixtures are shabby, the wi-fi internet never worked right (at 10 euro/day) the mattress is a foam pad that flops up at the top and bottom when you sit in the midde. Everything has been "remodeled" by giving it an extra thick coat of paint.

On the plus side, there's a fat, happy cat living in the lobby and you can buy wooden shoes right at reception.

Top Local Tips for Amsterdam

Luggage If staying at the Hem Hotel and on day of departure if waiting around like we was (flight at 7pm), best thing is to put your suitcases in the lockers at the train station for 4.30/6.50 euros (small / large suitcase) It saves you having to catch a tram back to the hotel when you can be spending a little extra time sight seeing.

Spui Cafe brilliant cosy little bar with resident cat and Frank Sinatra buff!!!! cheap drink lovely atmosphere very friendly!!!

Airport - Hotel shuttle bus If travelling in a group of 4 or more - ensure you buy your shuttle bus tickets together as discounts are more than likely. We managed to travel half price!!
