Reviews - France Hotel

OK hotel, bad business practices

The France Hotel engages in bad business practices. When I arrived with my Expedia reservation (fully paid), the clerk informed me that they had over booked and there was no room available for me. He said they had arranged for a room at another hotel they were affiliated with. While the France looked fairly nice, the hotel they rebooked me in was in the heart of the Red Light district and was the worst hotel I ever stayed in. The bedroom was tiny, the shared shower in the hall had no hot water and only a trickle of cold, and to top it off, the Hotel France did not change my room charge, so I paid the highest rate in Amsterdam and was put in a dump. Rooms in Amsterdam that night were almost non existent so I had no options and the Hotel France took advantage of me.

Top Local Tips for Amsterdam

Best 2007 Restaurant in Amsterdam - Flo Transcendental cream brule, caesar salad made from scratch (the grilled sardines are something of a challenge), crowed on a weekday during lunch by Amsterdammers. The first hotel restaurant that I have been to that is actually (very) good. Eden Hotel on Rembrandt Square. Can't say that every dish works, the sea bream on marinated fennel on lobster/dry cod sauce near mashed potatoes with bacon and frie potatoes, was well... trying to sing a few too many notes all at once. But, well worth the visit to witness this kind of culinary ambition and to see steak tartar made at your table with real (pasteurized) egg yolk. Received a virtually unheard of 9+ rating by the local paper.

Finding your way You must get a decent map - we had about six or seven different maps which we picked up once we arrived. They were all pants and only showed selected streets and canals. Get one that shows it all and you can not go wrong x

Food and drink Eat and drink a bit further out from the centre, food and drink around the rembrandt square area is very pricy!!
