I'm afraid our experience in this "hotel" wasn't as we expected. We were 6 people who had booked a six-bed room for two nights during the weekend. We booked it more than two weeks in advance and through their website and we received a confirmation e-mail. The day before we arrived, in the evening, the hotel staff called me and told me that there had been a problem with the authorisation of my credit card and that we could only stay for the first night.



When we arrived the only solution the man at the desk gave us was to split into several rooms and pay 45 euros/person/night instead of 30 euros, which was what we had arranged. He was quite rude and he didn't care at all about us. We paid cash for that night and looked for another place to stay. The 7-bed room we got (although we were just 6 people) has little to do with the pictures, at least it's not as nice and clean. We were on the ground floor, so people walking in the street could see you. The carpet was very ugly and there was a large space between the door and the floor, so any mouse or cockroach could easily enter at any time, and my bed was just beside. The light was very dim and the bathroom was ridiculously small, perhaps just 1 metre wide. The place where breakfast is served is also very small, although the meal was OK. Then, according to their rules, if the fire alarm rings you'll have to pay a 500 euro fine! Our main complain about this hotel is obviously that they cannot change all your plans some hours before you arrive and not care at all. They definitely wanted us to pay more, or assigned our booked second night to other people for a higher price. Whatever it was, that's not the way you should treat your customers!!!

This hotel was our first stop on a week long trip. The staff was very friendly. The rooms are small, but the beds were really comfortable. It is in a safe neighborhood near the tram lines, and you can walk to Rembrant Sq. Central Station is a cab ride away. No elevators and no drugs allowed! Safe, quiet, and clean.

We have been to the Barbacan hotel Amsterdam for our honeymoon. And I have to say this place is the best.
Nice staff (Nelly, Jurry and josien) are so nice. This hotel make you feel special. We made the booking by internet www.barbacan.nl. We are comming back in 2006.

Top Local Tips for Amsterdam

Anne Frank House A brilliant museum which was the highlight of my trip. A good tip though is to go in the evening an hour or so before the last admission. We did this and walked straight in without having to queue and ended up being able to walk around the museum without having to wait for people to move or being pressured into looking around quickly. It was delightful.

Little Girl's Room's.... There are no public toilets in Amsterdam for women (to be fair there are only green metal circles for the guys.... you will know what I mean when you get out there!!!) So take every opportunity to go when you can!!! We ended up usually getting a drink and using the loo (it is a pub owners conspiricy I think!!!!! :)) Or going into Centraal Station and paying the 50 cent to go there..
