The hotel staff were polite and the reception looks fantastic but the room itself was awful. It smelled foul, the walls were dirty as was the carpet and bedside cabinets. Don't stay here.

My boyfriend booked the Best Western for a birthday get-a-way, a wonderful present! But to arrive and not actually be able to see the building through the scaffolding was not the best beginning!

Building residue all over the entrance is something that couldn't be helped I understand. In the lift on the way up to our room there was a sticker over the button for floor two saying NONONONONONO- so we knew not to press that button, however the lift stopped there anyway and the door opened to a construction site. Wonderful.

Almost as good is when I opened the window to allow some air into the cramped room to find toenail clippings in the bottom of the window frame. Sickening

Our room was as basic as basic could get- holey curtains pulled back to reveal more building sites- but the room was suffice as we were not planning in spending much time there anyway.

The site said it was 5minutes from the hotel to central station- be warned this is a 30 minute walk and the staff were unsure even which direction to go.

On our second morning we woke up and showered by 10.30 when my boyfriend went to brush his teeth they had switched the water off. This was the final straw for him and went to reception to find out what was going on- the receptionist rudely told him that it will be switched back on in around and hour. When he told her that we were about to go out (looking surprised that we'd be leaving the hotel at 11am?) she gave him a bottle of water, but with no real apology.

We thought we were getting a bargain but it turned out we could have got a much better room for the same price elsewhere. Apparently Best Westerns are known to be good value for money but this one certainly was not!!

What can I say about this hotel. Perhaps we were unlucky but for £150 a night B&B (for two) we got the most grotty room you can imagine (nothing like the picture on the web). Nothing about it would warrant 1 star let alone 3! The staff were fine, the bedding clean and the shower worked, so probably OK if you plan to be out and about a lot but certainly shouldn't be the above price. Plus points were the location - very close to the centre so nice and central. If you want clean basic accommodation I would suggest a youth hostel would be better. This is overpriced and basically - based on our room - a dump. The hotel was also under reconstruction and constant noise from 6:00am in the morning. Suggest if you are to spend this kind of money on a weekend you go elsewhere.

We have stayed in the BW Museum hotel. I can really recommend this hotel to everybody. It is a nice clean hotel. The situation is great. All the staff was very helpful. We are really looking forward to come back.

It was a very nice, clean hotel. We got it for a great deal, because it was off season...they were very helpful, and even held our luggage for us on the day we were leaving. The room was very clean, and it was right by the tram station, so very convenient to get in and out of the city cheaply. A definite good buy :)

Top Local Tips for Amsterdam

Discount Cards - Pros & Cons The Holland Card is a complete rip-off for Amsterdam. The I-Amsterdam card is worth it if you like any and every museum, but pricey. A 24-, 48-, or 72-hour GVB transport card isn't worth it as you will walk most places, but a Strippenskaart is.

Haarlem Take the train to Haarlem, only 15 minutes, its a very nice place with a lot less tourists

Travelling around The trams run every couple minutes to all important destinations and are very cheap. Worth using them frequently
