Top Local Tips for Amsterdam

Very Cool Just returned from Amsterdam for the first time, and what a wonderful place it is! it is just as cool as I have always heard it is, only cooler! Just a beautiful city, sort of like a large Greenwich village, with canals and bike paths running all through it. Great little bars, cafes and "coffee shops" ;-) around every corner. My partner and I walked for hours, day & night. The whole city seems so sureal. The streets are quiet, with very few cars, tons of bikes, and 15th & 16th century buildings lining canal after canal. You can always catch one of the easy to use trams which connect the whole city when you get tired of walking. We both felt very relaxed and really enjoyed the whole experience.

I Amsterdam Card -- a good deal for museum-goers If you're planning on visiting a number of museums, the I Amsterdam card might be a good deal. You can buy one in the train station (I forget which platform -- ask the Info desk) and the lines are usually shorter there than in the tourist office across the street. It covers the Rijksmuseum (most of which is closed for renovation, but the big draws are still there), the VanGogh museum (get there early - big lines), and much much more. There's a free canalboat tour included. Also travel on busses and trams, though not the train to the airport.

Dining in Amsterdam Eating in Amsterdam was a gastronomic nightmare, food at the cheaper end for example 15 euro for a main just awful, ended up spending 35 euo for a decent meal, after becomming tired of dreadful food. Way too overpriced for those on a budget...the worst noodle box world wide. Canal bus was a good value way of getting around in realtive comfort for those who had time and wanted a rest from wlaking.
