Historical Traveller Reviews of Amsterdam Marriott Hotel

Great place to stay!

from TaraR
Three of us stayed at the Amsterdam Marriott for a long weekend at the end of Oct 2004. Room was equivalent to what I have would expect in a US hotel and much bigger than any other Eurpean hotel room I have stayed in. I requested 2 double bed and all of us agreed that they were VERY comfortable (featherbed and great pillows). Location was great and was an easy train & tram ride from the airport. I was hoping to find something a little cheaper than 178 Euros / night - but this actually was one of the lower rates I could find (I looked at both triple rooms and 2 seperate rooms). After reading other reviews, I tried priceline a couple of times for 2 rooms at btwn $77 - $99 - but no offers were accepted. We did not eat breakfast at the hotel or eat at any of the restaurants or use room service. Fitness center was very nice (for a hotel) - 2 treadmills, 4 bikes, 2 EFXs and lots of weights. I used it everyday we were there.

Overall, I would definitely recommend!!

Welcome Comfort

We stayed at the Marriott after trying the tiny canalhouse hotel we had enjoyed in our youth - when damp and cramped were not a problem. Give me the comfort of central heating, large beds with down-filled pillowtops and a huge bathroom! It was worth every penny!

We had access to the Executive Lounge with free breakfast, happy hour and computer to check emails. Service was excellent and the Characters cafe was just the ticket for hot food looking out at the rain. Great location - walk out onto the Leidseplein or a short slog to the museums.

There must be better places, especially at this rate

Really mundane rooms, probably some of Marriott's least desireable anywhere -- can use an overhaul.

Check-in was a trial. The first room was 90 degrees, and the heat uncontrollable. Asked for another room. 'Got the idea that this was too much trouble for the young lady at the desk, and was given a room that would overlook a construction area -- NOT good since I arrived late in the evening. Asked again for a change. Third room was only okay, but the temperture could still use better controls.

My departure time changed, so I specifically informed the concierge that I DID NOT need the very early morning wake-up and cab at 6 a.m. Of course, I was phoned at 5 a.m. to inquire if I needed a cab for my early departure. Concierge also gave lousy advice about how much time to allow for catching my international flight.

So many of these problems are avoidable with better training, attention to detail, and maid service reporting when rooms have real problems.

Would never stay again, particularly at these prices.

Not so good!

When you are in the hotel, you don't have the idea of staying in Amsterdam, it could be anywhere in Europe. The hotel does not comply with the new slogan of the city of Amsterdam - I Amsterdam. The bar looks like an Irish pub and on top of that a Pizza hut is included. The room I had was very small and a little bit old. The breakfast room is old fashioned. Overall the hotel is not worth the price.

Wonderful Stay!

from Dolly123
In December 2003, I had 3 days to kill between business trips (one week in Poland, then 4 days in The Hague); flying home to the US and then back to Europe was out of the question ... so I decided to cool my heels in Amsterdam. I'd visited Amsterdam several times before, and with the rush to get all my Christmas activities done before the 2 weeks of business travel, I really just wanted somewhere to veg-out ... and the Amsterdam Marriott was the PERFECT choice. I treated myself to an Executive Room, something I've never done in all my travels. Check-in was a breeze - quick, efficient and friendly. The Conseirge answered every question/request with accuracy and a smile. The room was huge (could have held a roller derby in there). The king bed was the most comfortable hotel bed I have EVER slept in. The Executive Club Room (access came with the rate) was quiet, classy and spotlessly clean; breakfast here was very nice (typical continental plus smoked salmon, fresh fruit and few other extras); my favorite ECR amenity was the available-24-hours-a-day Cappuccino machine (sorry Marriott, you lost money on this guest). I even hung out here a few hours each afternoon working on my laptop - got lots done with all the quiet and endless supply of coffees, teas, and sweet and savory munchies. The fitness center was well-equiped: 4 treadmills, 4 bicycles, rowing machines, nautilus equipment and free weights; TVs in every corner so you could catch up on news, sports, and make the work-out time fly by. I basically locked myself in my room for 3 days, only going to the ECR, the fitness center and the occassional walk outside (freezing in Dec). Since it was too cold to venture outside after dark and I was alone, I took a risk on Room Service: Fabulous! The Cream Tomato Soup is to die for (and I am a serious Food Snob), as is the Caesar Salad. I ordered several other times over my 3-day stay, and all were exceptional. My only complaint: HAVE THE MASSAGE/SPA STAFF AVAILABLE 7 DAYS A WEEK!!! With the state I was in, I would have booked a massage, pedicure, facial, etc - but the spa facilities weren't available on Sat afternoon, Sunday or Monday. I left the Marriott, as my husband would say, "fat, dumb and happy"! Highly, highly recommended.

for less $)

Very disappointed in this hotel. The rooms are small. We had a kingsize bed that took up the whole room. The room was so small that the desk did double duty as a night stand. Did not look at all like the picture on the Marriott website. Definitely not up to Marriott standards. Expected more for approx. $230/night. We booked for 7 nights and moved to another hotel after 2 nights where we got a more spacious room for less money

Excellent Stay in an Executive Room

from RJPOceanside_CA
Re-located here from the Holiday Inn. Executive room more than adequate for a family of four and the executive lounge helps with free soft drinks and snacks throughout the day. Beds were outstanding as were the nice touch of robe and slippers. In one of several great locations in central Amsterdam. Highly recommended!

A little old, but ok overall

I bid on priceline and got a good deal ($99/night) for a busy long weekend. The hotel is at a good location. Walking distance (literally2 minutes) to Ledseplein, museums (5-7 minutes), and casino (across the street). I enjoy walking everywhere, so this is perfect. But the rooms are a little on the old side. Although it is quite spacious for European standards. It has a nice pizza hut and a bar downstairs as well as a nice gym. The only complain I have is the climate control. I don't think it's worth $99/night if it wasn't for the long weekend. So I suggest you only stay here if you can get a great deal.

A little worn, location could be better

from mhoban
I was here May 6-9, 2004. I thought that the room was a bit dated. The location is close to the museums so if that is your main interest you are in good shape.

I was interested in the museums but the shopping and clubs were quite a ways away. I would probably try to find something closer to the center next time.

There are however, many good restaurants to pick from near the hotel. Take a look down the side streets off Liedsestraat.

One place I would not recommend is the Italian restaurant next to the hotel. I thought it was overpriced and really not very good. I had a much better meal for about half the price in one of the side streets.

Get a nice view

Ask for a room with a view of Leidseplein. The hotel has no real Dutch character but excellent location and helpful staff.
