Great beds

The Westin Dragonara was a lovely hotel. It was rated a 5 star but in our opinion it was a 4 star as we have stayed at slightly nicer hotels. The beds are fantastic, so big and comfortable. The rooms are spacious and clean. The bathroom could of done with a bit of TLC. Mold and broken grout. The service was lovely and the staff were very friendly. Buying drinks at bar was very expensive example 2x brandy and cokes £14.80. Much cheaper to walk into St Julians 5min walk away. Breakfast was lovely, plenty of choice and the buffet in evening was very nice.
Only thing I would comment badly on is the excursions. They are a rip off big time. Don't do them, they cost a fortune and are not worth it. You can get around Malta very easily on your own. The local bus takes you everywhere for 1 euro. The trips cost around £40-70 each and are not anyway diasbled friendly even tho the rep tells you they are. Alot of business functions are held at this hotel and many weddings so always busy. Overall, a pleasant holiday and would recommend hotel but not excursions.

We had a fantastic stay at the Westin in Malta. The room was large and amazing and clean, the service was perfect, food extremely good and the staff are simply too nice! I would certainly go back. The location is great by the way too. Surrounded by the sea and very close to all the other bars and shops etc! Although it was hard leaving the sun bed! If you're going to Malta, stay at the Westin! Definitely the best!!

A wonderful hotel - with a sort of quiet, unobtrusive, yet exceptional service. Every member of staff from the Manager to the Maid demonstrated the highest level of service and friendliness. The rooms - perfect. The bed.... I wanted to bring it home! The location - couldn't be better. The facilities are very good. An excellent gym and the spa facilities are second to none. Overall, highly recommended.

breakfast heaven

from A TripAdvisor Member
The hotel probably was a 5 star, in need of some cosmetic surgery but nothing too bad.We booked a tower room , believing it would be more spacious with the children, all the beds are in one room.We immediately up graded to two inter connecting rooms, which the hotel gave us 50 % off, still costing an extra £500 for the week. The view was not as good as tower room , one of the balconys was very wobbly and unsafe, not ideal with children , so they where banned from going out there!!. The breakfast was heaven, everything from full english smoked salmon and champagne!!. even the plates where warm, which you don t normally get. There was no entertainment during our stay, starts early June. The kids club was very friendly, one of the staff called therese was super, we booked her for baby sitting on the evening, she was so nice. All the staff where efficient. If you suffer with a bad back take a mattress for the sun beds there so hard, but staff gave me extra towels to try and make the bed comfortable. Snacks on menu are geared for the italians but they will make you any thing on request. Had a fab time at the dolphin park, swam with them for 45 minutes approx £80 per head, tip if going very dis organised oncheck in opens 10.00, my advice get there an hour later still queing even though we had booked, no swimming pool there, one cafe which was heaving, but fantastic experience.

The Westin Dragonara was perfect for what we wanted...

We spent 4 nights at the hotel..and spent all our days sightseeing and enjoying the history of the islands - which was awesome! The hotel is lovely - great location on the water...large pool/patio complex - casino adjoining - terrific staff at the hotel- everyone was friendly and helpful!!
Malta is an incredible historical resource - the hotel arranged a private tour
for us with a wonderful historial guide...the concierge staff at the hotel was outstanding and informative! We loved our visit- and would definitely go back!

Good Hotel

from LailieP
We had booked a double room with two queen size beds for 96 Euro per night via the hotel's website. Although we did not receive the announced reservation confirmation e-mail everything else about our stay was perfect. The very spacious room had a balcony and sea view. The hotel staff was very helpful and any requests (extra blanket, adapter, ..) were fulfilled nearly immediately.

The hotel is situated next to Paceville, which offers a wide variety of bars and clubs. Although these are in walking distance the hotel was still quiet.

Conference trip

from DPOR
I stayed here attending a conference. The hotel was very picturesque, well decorated and food/drink was good. Service was also very friendly and very professional. But, something I cannot put my finger on was a little odd in the atmosphere- it was a little too formal maybe? I am not sure I would go again for a holiday but it was very good for a conference.

Loved this hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed at the Westin Dragonera in March 2005 and had a wonderful time. Compared to the hotel we stayed in in England and Rome this one was far superior (and cheaper to). The hotel was clean, the staff was excellent. They would do anything to make our stay enjoyable, which they did. I was a little worried before we got there that the hotel would be nothing like they portrayed on the internet, but to my delight that was not the case. The hotel was exactly as portrayed on the internet. The view of the Mediterraneon Sea from the room was a sight to behold. I will never forget my stay there. When I return to Malta, I will definately stay there.

In addition, the staff was very courteous and supportive. They would go out of their way to help you in any way they could.

To me this was a 5 star hotel!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Needs refurbishment...

from French
Our room was nice and large, giving on the pool with a partial sea view.
However walls and carpets, as well as bathroom, definitely need refurbsishment (our stay was in April 2003).

Thin entrance door, so we had to enjoy the conversation of people in the corridor at any time...

Pool area is nice, although there are not that many chairs or loungers, and it can easily get crowded.

One of the best places to stay in Malta

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed at the Westin Malta just after Christmas 2004 and we do agree that the hotel is not perfect, but we thoroughly enjoyed our stay here and would rate it as one of the best hotels in Malta. The restaurants and lobby lounge are excellent, however room service is too expensive, a club sandwich was 2 lira more in room service than in the lobby bar and a surcharge of 1 lira per person is applied. The concierge service and reception staff are excellent. The maid service is very courteous. The rooms and bed are very comfortable, however, some of the balconies are showing plaster cracks and this could make it look shabby in the future if not rectified. We were very disappointed to find that the club lounge didn't have drinks and fruit available all day, however daily papers and the television are available all day in there. We were also disappointed to find that there's no free internet available in the club lounge (like there is at the Intercontinental) and had to pay 3 lira for two hours internet in the business centre and the computers in there were sometimes locked and the snacks in the lounge, in the evening aren't that plentiful, especially if it's busy.

imperfect but nice

from CintiKid
When one is promised a Starwood upgrade and one is available, but it isn't offered, one gets off on the wrong foot (at 130 AM). some of their restaurants are tasty - but not all. Place is elegant and expensive. The classic/crowded/rickety bus ride into Valetta is a delight. highly recommended eatery (seafood and fenek=rabbit) a block and a half away La Maltija is WONDERFUL including service. Dragonara has also substituted a CocaCola imitation for the delightful Maltese soft drink Kinnie ... to be regretted. Spacious room although bed was too soft for our backs. Still, not a bad place for a stay on Malta if you can afford it.

Good spot to try

from lisette
My sister and I just spent 10 nights at the Westin Dragonara. Having read that European standards in hotels are not quite as high as in the US, we were not disappointed.

We had a room on the 7th (of 8) floor that overlooked the Mediterranean Sea. It was a beautiful view! We got a great rate on the internet (through Starwood) so it was just over $100 USD. Living in San Francisco, we have paid similar amounts for 3 stars here. The daily maid and turndown service were great. (The only complaint is -- how do they wash the coffe mugs? We got the exact same ones each day. . .) The room was very large and had two queen sized beds. Often we left later than the maid service would clean our rooms, but we still managed to receive fresh towels for the morning.

Room service was pricey, but what do you expect at a hotel? We ordered the cheese plate and it was so enormous that we both ate and considered it our meals for the day (the equivalent of $15 USD). Later in our stay, we ordered another to serve as our dinner. This time it was skimpy and didn't have enough fruit. When it was delivered, I asked for more fruit. We were brought up a full plate of fruit to go with our other (much more than we needed, but appreciated nonetheless).

The majority of the staff was very friendly. We did have a little run-in with one of the concierges when we apparently were asking too many questions. But the other two that helped us were very friendly.

I suppose all of the remodeling was compete by the time we arrived. It still could use more. . .

Basically, if you can get a good rate here and go into it expecting that your room will be somewhere between a 3 and 4 star (American) you won't be disappointed.

Not what we expected!

from A TripAdvisor Member
We were disappointed with our 1 week stay at the Westin Dragonara. Expecting a 5 star vacation, we were disappointed to find a hotel which is in need of renovations, full of children, no beach (beach access is so small that it's not worth it to mention). There were jelly fish warnings every day so difficult to swim. Pools were salt water pools and not very clean. Prices were indeed 5 star - very expensive. Buffet dinners did not compare to previous stays in places such as Club Med - not a lot of choice and often the same items on the menu (i.e. Lamb almost every night and the starters were always the same). If you want a wake-up call, make sure you also set the alarm clock. We asked for a wake-up call twice - the first time we did not receive a call so were in a rush to get ready for our excursion. The second time the wake-up call was late! The hotel provides a daily newspaper although you're lucky if you receive one in the morning! Check your bill at the end of your stay carefully - we were overcharged by more than 80 Euro! No animation in the hotel and no activities offered (although there are some water sports advertised but you need to pay for these). Some good points to mention is that the staff is very friendly, especially the conceirge who was very helpful. Rooms were nice, all with a view of the ocean.

Top Local Tips for St. Julians

Fantastic seafood, lovely views Spinola Bay, at St Julians, is a vibrant area with lots of restaurants. My favourite is La Dolce Vita, which is set over two floors and has lovely views of the bay. The food is terrific, although expensive, and lovely for a special occasion.

La Dolce Vita Fabulous food - we had sea bass baked in a salt crust - great wine list -set in a lovely location overlooking Spinola Bay.

Eat at the Avenue, the restaurant #1 There is a great restaurant at St. Julians' - the Avenue. It has three different entrances and many areas: smoking, non-smoking and outdoor.
