Loved the Hilton
from A TripAdvisor MemberFur coat, no knickers (as we British say)...
from A TripAdvisor MemberThose impressions won't fade when you step inside either - the lobby looks directly out onto the inviting blue Mediterranean Sea. Polished marble abounds, and all the fittings and fixtures look just right. All the rooms have a great view, and ours came with a huge bed and welcomingly cool stone floor.
Scratch below the surface though, and you'll see that this property serves up two star service at five star prices. The alarm bells started to ring when we inspected our room a little closer. The bed might have been huge, but the pillows were thin and cheap, the bedding flowery and old fashioned and the bathroom white tiled and basic, with a shower curtain straight out of a Travel Inn (UK-style motel) and a shower that was about as powerful as the old diesel Mercedes I hired the next day.
The real annoyance came the next morning, when at around seven it sounded like someone in the room above was trying to rearrange the furniture. If you've ever heard someone drag a cabinet over a stone or wooden floor, you'll be familiar with the noise. This cacophony lasted for an hour, followed by shouting and yelling from the corridor outside, and was crowned by the maid trying to access our room to clean it at about five past eight. Yes, 8.05 AM, in July in a resort hotel. I didn't expect that either.
We gave up on sleep and went for breakfast, which was actually pretty good, with a wide choice. We made our minds up the we couldn't put up wiith the noise for the rest of the week and went off to find another hotel. We were both delighted and annoyed that an Executive Club room in the Intercontinental down the road was 15LM cheaper than the 95LM we were paying for a standard room in the Hilton. This made the decision to move even easier!
We headed back and spent the day in the pool area, which was busy and far from peaceful with the number of children running and yelling around it. Also there seemed to be no ban on ball games in the pool, which I found annoying. It's hard to relax on a sun lounger when you're worried you might get a ball in your face.
Dinner back at the Hilton followed, which was in the Oceana buffet restaurant. The food, concrete bread rolls apart, was rather good, if a little limited in choice. The service was good but not a patch on that you would find in many Asian and Middle Eastern hotel restaurants.
Night number two in the Hilton, our last, ended with much the same cacophony as the previous one. It seems that the 'cool' stone floors transmit every movement, footstep and door closing of your neighbours' room into yours.
So on the face of it, this hotel looks great but is expensive and flawed. If you've no kids and looking for luxury and some peace and quiet I'd advise you to head for the Intercontinental.
Fantastic
from Guido_FlashmanWe really liked Malta but I think a week there was plenty. We hired a "car" to tour the island and this really made the holiday. They drive on the left (like UK) in Malta, the traffic is quite mad, bit like London but less angry and a bit slower.
We visited loads of Historical places and saw umpteen Baroque Style Churches. We didn't take any of the rep's tours on account of having the car. The days we didn't go out in the car were spent lounging by the pool, which is great for just chilling. Would recommend the following:
* Hire a car
* Restaurants in Spinola Bay (out of Hilton and turn left).
* A little bit of snorkling from the back of Hilton Malta
* Trip to Gozo (Smaller part of the archipelago)
* Trip to Valletta (not on a Sunday as everything closed)
* Trip to Mdina
Best hotel eva
from A TripAdvisor MemberIt was such a nice hotel i am struggling to fin done that matches this year! So we may be goin back ! if you are are concidering the hotel but checking out the hotels take my word go there!! relax and enjoy !
Fantastic Hotel!
from HolidaymadThe staff were very friendly and helpful - when we arrived at the hotel our room had twin beds but the porter arranged for the beds to be made in to a double straight away. Also, because of health reason I cannot drink cows milk, the hotel arranged for me to have soya milk both in our room and to be available in all their restaurants and bars (very handy at breakfast time).
The facilities were good too including a large indoor swimming pool (it was too cold to swim in the outdoor pool). Although we don't usually eat in hotel restaurants we definitely recommend the Blue Elephant (thai restaurant - quite expensive but worth it) and the Oceana Buffet Restaurant (a bit more expensive than eating outside of the hotel but the food was delicious - not your typical buffet!). One restaurant we would recommend outside of the hotel is Paparazzi at Spinola Bay - about 5 mins walk from the hotel.
Superb Hotel
from sadmatProblems again...
from FrenchWe could enjoy the high heels of our neighbour on the upper floor, listen to the phone conversation of some crazy person at 2 AM on his terrace outside (and we were 4 floors above him...), hear the TV going on in the nearby room and listen to people chatting in the corridors day and night !
The rest of the hotel (food, service, location) is excellent... but this noise problem is definitely too much for such a high-end resort.
We won't go back...
Afternoon Tea to die for
from A TripAdvisor MemberBeautiful Hotel
from A TripAdvisor MemberThe hotel is beautiful... the rooms were spacious and very clean and the staff were polite and helpful. Breakfast was excellent... plenty of variety and the hotel has a "Hilton Breakfast Time" menu which lists the foods which are high in fibre, low in fat etc. for those of you watching your weight!
As it was off-season when we were there the outdoor pools were closed, however there is an indoor heated pool, sauna, gym and steam room. The hotel also has a full beauty spa and their Hot Stone Massage is to die for!
There are plenty of restaurants in and around St. Julian's Bay.Two restaurants that I would recommend (and which are based at the Marina in the hotel complex are Zen (Japanese) which serves sushi and tempura based dishes and Joey Tomatoes (Italian) which has some weird and wonderful pizzas. There is also another seafood restaurant, a steakhouse and a Greek restaurant. The Hilton also has a Thai restaurant and an Italian which are also very reasonably priced
After a brisk walk around the Bay I would recommend the hotel's Vista Hot Chocolate which contain 40g of belgian chocolate and is pure heaven!!
All in all if you are looking for a relaxing holiday in a luxurious hotel, I would thoroughly recommend the Hilton. However... if you are looking for a hectic nightlife, I would recommend waiting until the summer months when I am led to believe that the bars and restaurants are packed! At this time of year, the area is fairly quiet.
Great Hotel, shame about the Island
from leehill1507Could not fault the hotel in any way. Rooms were clean and spacious, with balcony overlooking the Marina. Bed was huge and very comfortable.
Nice pool / sauna / steam room with gym, tennis and squash courts.
Food was excellent - breakfast in the buffet style Oceana restaurant, and the food at the Italian style Bottega del Vino restaurant was faultless. The staff were also very courteous.
Can not be so complementary of the Island of Malta. The Portomaso Resort is nice enough, with a few upmarket shops and restaurants, but way too small. If you are looking for a fairly lively holiday, and like City breaks, forget it. There is nothing at all to do in Malta, other than trawl around a couple of old towns. There are hardly any decent beaches.
If you like Malta, then would recommend a stay here, you will not be disappointed. If you have reservations about the Island itself, unless you want a sleepy break, then think twice.
Top Local Tips for St. Julians
Buses in Malta Buses from St Julians along the coast are every few minutes; the cost is 20 cents (32 pence stirling) for all but the longest trip. Whilst the buses are a bit ancient that adds to the fun, especially when getting the chance to get to know the locals.
Young hip and trendy If you are above the age of 25 then this place will make you feel old. The legal age to buy alcohol is 16 so the age range of those out and about are 16-21.
Left hand drive You need a car to explore this beautiful island properly, be aware that there will be very few traffic signs on the island and that traffic regulations are handled quite loosely.
