Never again. The room was extremely hot and loud, the A/C was never turned on as they kept promising for 8 days. The bathroom was really disgusting, the toilet didn't flush properly. It is too old and uncomfortable to deserve 4 stars. The only kind personal are the chiefs, they did a great job.

My husband and I have just spent Easter (10 days) at the Diplomat. Although not 4 star standard (more like 3) we were aware of this before we went. We found it clean, comfortable and convenient for walking either to St Julians or the ferry etc. Buses also pass the door frequently. Breakfast was quite good (hot and cold choices) although it did lack fresh crusty bread! We only had one evening meal (a buffet arrangement)which was adequate, but there are lots of lovely restaurants nearby - we thoroughly recommend "The Kitchen".

The staff were very friendly and we had a lovely break.

Just returned from the Diplomat where I stayed for 1 week. Stayed over New Years. The staff were very welcoming and there were no problems. I plan to go back again. The staff was very helpful, the rooms were clean the food was good.

Poor service and staff, old and poorly maintained

A real disappointment with this hotel. Reception staff was unfriendly and even rude. The room was old fashioned, with old furniture, and not very clean. It reminded me of low cost North-African hotels. Hotel staff in general was unhelpful. Would not recommend this hotel.

Historical Traveller Reviews of The Diplomat Hotel

ve stayed in better prisons.

from ungruntled
The most telling thing about this hotel was that the plaque spouting effusions of excellence and adherence to the Howard Johnson code of wonderful hotels, in prime position between the lifts, was faded to being only partly legible. This set the tone. We had booked a non-smoking room- we were given a smoking room which stank. After attempting to open the curtains, I became aware that one of the curtains was reluctant to open. Upon further inspection this was found have been because the curtain had been nailed over the window to conceal a crack in the glass from floor to ceiling. The front desk staff were discourteous and indifferent, almost to the point where one felt obliged to tell them so. The "Health Centre", and/or spa and gym, consisted of a running machine, a bicycle and a sauna, all of which turned off at the mains and located in a strip-lit subterranean room.
Most notably, there was a complete lack of redeeming features. Truly awful.

from AlwaysAirborne
Airconditioning not workingn(still hot in October), a tired old place, breakfast abysmal (coffee undrinkable - possibly made from acorns, milk watery with a yellowish scum, muesli with one sultana per cubic metre), swimming pool has bubbles of scum in one corner and a filthy surround & dirty sunloungers. Staff doing their best in typically friendly Maltese way. I would not spoil your holiday by coming here - better to spend a bit more and go somewhere decent.

Mediocre at best

from Redheat
The view from our room was excellent. The room overall was adequate but the bathroom light hardly existed, the air conditioner was non existent and their is a trick to flushing the toliet.

We found the service staff pleasant enough but the front desk staff always gave you the feeling you were being a pain for asking for anything. We asked what bus would take us into St. Julians and we waited about a half hour for that one bus, as it turned out there were a few buses that would have gotten us there the one we were told didn't run as frequently. The internet is expensive and you can't split the time up. There wasn't the impression that the front desk staff was willing to help inform guests of anything they may need help with.

No Air Conditioning in August!!!

from Nikitin007
Initially my travel agent booked two weeks for us in this hotel starting from August 15, 2006. However it turned out that air conditioning was broken in the hotel. And it was really hot in August!!! First couple of days people at the reception were promising they'll fix it soon and even gave me a fan! How nice, taking into consideration I was thinking I'm staying in a four-star hotel... Later I learnt from someone that one part of A/c was broken, this part is not available in malta, they ordered it from Italy, noone knows when it is coming, etc...
After staying a couple of days in Diplomat, we asked our agent to move us to any place in Sliema with air conditioning. The agent contacted a duty manager of the hotel who ... assured the agent that everything is fine and air conditioning is working properly. How nice!!! Of course we did invite the agent inside the room and she could feel her self that air conditioning was dead... Whithout any hesitation she moved us to a real 4-star hotel. I can't imagine staying 2 weeks in this horrably hot room.
It looks like my review is too long and I will not describe dirty swimming-pool, funny elevators, etc. Well, to be honest, staff in the restaurant was nice... maybe because restaurant was the only place with A/C.
My advice - Don't go there!!!

A Disappointing 4* Hotel

from EUReviewer
The Howard Johnson Diplomat Hotel in Malta is in an excellent location on the Sliema Promenade. The reception service upon arrival was hassle-free. The lobby area was pleasant enough, but always seemed to smell a little odd. The Lobby Bar was fine, with a good view, and reasonable prices - as hotels go. The room was a very good size, and the beds were comfortable. The balcony, though, was rather small, but still had a sea view. The hotel offered an excellent minibar package service, the cheapest I have ever come across! The breakfast, however, was extremely disappointing. The staff were unhelpful and seemed to get in the way. The buffet consisted of the usual items: Bacon, Eggs, Bread, Meat, Cheese, etc., but none of which seemed to be of good quality. The Tea and Coffee was awful, and so was the Hot Chocolate. The evening meal looked and smelled awful, so Half-Board is not recommended!! The Maltese Tourist Authority must be quite generous with their star ratings, as this hotel was certainly not to the standard of a 4*, but more that of a 3*.

very disappointing

from stevieg26
I have just returned from the Diplomat and I can not believe that stayed at the same place! I toally agree with the other two reviews which stated that the food was poor. It was. It was lukewarm at best and cold at worse and they didn't cater for children. Despite paying for half board, the evening meals looked so unpalatable on two occasions that we ate out. The satellite TV had only one English channel (BBC World News-and that only after I had complained because we had none the first day) whilst there were umpteen channels in Italian and German. It is stated as one of the facilities offered, after all.The roof top terrace was a disgarce: There was frequently no toilet paper in the loos serving the terrace, nor was there soap or drying faclilities and the bottom of the pan in the gents was black. The terrace furniture was tatty and what few parasols there were were tied up with string and bits of wire. There was flaking paint in the pool and the whirlpool (a seat with jets in it!!) did not work for the duration. The games room and 'health centre' were a joke, the corridors smelled musty and the lifts were abysmally slow.
In our accomodation, there was a loose arm on one of the chairs (from talking to other guests this seems to be a feature of the rooms) and whilst tea, coffe and sugar was provided we had to provide our own milk. The matresses were heavily stained-nice! The bathroom was great: The taps on one of the basins was so difficult to turn off that we stopped using after day one. Especially as when we did try to use it, it leaked on the floor. There was mould growth on the tile grout, bath sealant and ceiling. The marble plinth around the basins had come away from the wall and we had to keep pumping the toilet handle to get it to flush.
And what about the 'side view' balcony? Just room for one and if you crane your neck then yes, you can see the sea.
This hotel is 2 star not four, or anywhere close to four. There are always little things that you can find fault with when you go on holiday, but I've never before been so disappointed that I've complained about it. This time I have. I have written to the Howard Johnson International Group, Belleair and Going Places. I don't suppose that anything will come of it so I decided to warn others by posting on here. My advice is, DON'T GO THERE.
All of other English guests that we spoke to we equally disappointed. This was NOT value for money.
I would say though, that the staff were at all times courteous, friendly and helpful. Unfortunately, they could do nothing about this dreadful hotel.

What a bargain!

from scn
Got a great deal here with Expedia. It's a nice hotel is a good location. Close to town, ideal for getting into Valetta and exploring the island on the comprehensive bus system of Malta.
The hotel is a decent, clean, friendly hotel. It has nice, functional rooms, good bathrooms and a good buffet breakfast spread. I did venture to the 'gym' one day. It's tucked away right down in the cellar, next to a pool table and probably best avoided. While this hotel is far from being 5* it is a good, pleasant hotel with perfectly adequate facilites. And at the price I paid, it's an absolute bargain!!

Great Value

from meiholland
We stayed here for 8 nights for an Easter break and I was very apprehensive after reading the reviews, but was pleasantly surprised. The location is excellent and for the money it is very good value.

It is a bit 'tired', but it is very clean and the service is excellent. There is a fridge, kettle and hair dryer. The shower is not bad. I would stay there again.

All the rooms have side seaview, but ours was a bit dark and so we upgraded to a full seaview for only M£6 per night, well worth the extra.

The worst thing about the hotel is the lack of TV channels.

The worst 4 star we have ever visited

from A TripAdvisor Member
The staff were excellent and could not have been more helpful but the hotel was another matter. Generally run down and desperately in need of a facelift. Rooms and corridors smelled of decay and neglect. The food was atrocious - there seems to be no concept of getting it from the kitchen to the dining room and keeping it hot. The pool was covered in slime - we were told it was closed, others were told it was open. The whole building needs a massive revamp. It is unfair on the staff who are bound to struggle with such poor facilities. I cannot believe that Howard Johnson would lend their name to such an operation. These feelings were shared by every other resident we talked to. The hotel compared very unfavourably with other 4* in the area (Preluna, Windsor etc).

Sorry but only rates 3* with us!

from A TripAdvisor Member
This hotel was dissapointing, we booked 4 star expecting a little luxury. We paid the extra for a sea view and enjoyed sitting by our balconette. T.V. was in the room but unwatchable, despite being advertised as satelite, and the hotel showing a daily video. We did complain, twice, to no avail. The food was barely acceptable, saute potatoes on the buffet for breakfast and dinner every day! We found the staff polite and helpful at all times, even the handyman who came to paint over the rust stains on the bath. For the price we paid we did expect more. We would be reluctant to stay again before a complete refurb.
