We stayed at Ta Cenc for one week. Situated in a delightful setting. Very peaceful surroundings. We booked a Suite which was in one of the bungalow's although very clean it was very tired and was in need of refurbishment especially it been a 5 star it wasn't quite up to the standard. We found the choice of food very good and the staff most pleasant which helped us enjoy our holiday a lot more. The entertainment was also very good. I'm sure Ta Cenc will benefit from a refurbishment we would certainly go again.

Give this one a miss!

We have stayed 3 times at the Ta cenc and love the location and peace. Unfortunately the hotel is let down by unhelpful staff and uninspiring rooms.
On each occasion we seem to be allocated the worst room in the house. Each time we re-booked we emailed our request and booked and paid for a suite, what do you know, we get the worst room again. There are a group of rooms that overlook a rubbish tip and are far inferior to all the others. Our air conditioning in the suite did not work and the room smelled of damp and the furniture was something out of a seventies horror. We were moved the next day to a family room which had no view as the hotel was full even though we had booked a suite. This hotel is 5 star in location but definitely not 5 star in appearance and service (it would struggel to get a 3 star rating) The only plus was that the owner has renovated the spa, but my advice would be that he should have done the rooms first (but of course the spa brings him extra revenue). Food was ok, but service inconsistent and the lovely private beach club was filthy, cigarette buts everywhere (what a waste) this hotel would be great if a major hotel group could invest some capital into it. and run it properly the straw that broke the camels back was when we checked out we had been charged for half board for our whole stay, where we had only booked for 3 days, not a problem of course and we pointed it out to the receptionist who rolled his eyes and 'agreed to change it'. he did us a great favour it appears. better to spend your money in a hotel where the staff want to please you. I ll be back if it gets new management and ownership only.

relax and refresh in comfort

Having a holiday is important to everyone making sure it is special is often down to the hotel staff and the location. The te cenc has this down to an art ,the staff are excellent from the moment you arrive to last day of your holiday, polite, welcoming and with an attitude of nothing is to much bother as you are the customer. The resteraunt and the service is first class the chefs suceed in vairying the menus and gives you the problem of what to to choose. Buffet nights are unbeievable chance to try whatever you want without any problem of anyone hurrying you or making you feel unwelcome. The whole experience of this holiday was first class and no one should worry about not being able to chill, swim eat or do whatever they want to.

Great place to chill out

from Gricper
Stayed for a week after a hectic trip to Russia. Great for sitting by the pool (particularly the Adult only one!) alternately reading and swimming. Would agree with recommendation to book a Trullo. Breakfasts are good but Dinner should be a lot better to go along with the rest of the facilities and the 5 star tag. The restaurant close to the hotel isn't much better but Restaurant Ta Frenc (about 15 minutes away by road) is great - well worth the taxi fare.

What a disappointment

from GrumpyDad63
This was our fourth year in Malta/Gozo. We were really looking forward to 5* luxury at Ta Cenc. What a complete letdown. Reception/Restaurant/Pools/ Bar-very nice. Accomodation- awful- looked liked original fixtures from thirty years ago. If we had the choice we would have left without unpacking! Staff were less than helpful.Eventually offered alternative room which was bigger but no better. Managed to escape after two days back to St Julians and a proper 5* hotel.

Good but...

Ta Cenc is not, by European standards a 5* hotel - but then all of the Malta hotels seem to be 'over-starred' by at least one!

We liked the tranquil surroundings, the spa, the staff were friendly and the hotel well furnished etc. We found the food disappointing for a 'top' hotel and ate out at much better places (our favourate being Il Kartel).

So, yes - not at all bad but I would not book full board until you have sampled the food.

Ta Cenc exceeded our expectations

We have just come back from a week at Ta Cenc and really loved it. If you want a 5 star hotel in a conventional setting, then it's probably not the place for you, BUT if you want somewhere different, with total peace and quiet, located in wild unspoilt surroundings, with superb spa and relaxation facilities, then go for it! The staff are extremely helpful and friendly and we found the restaurant excellent value, particularly the set menu. We really value our privacy, so having a trullo with no noise from other guests and uninterrupted views was a real bonus. Our only reservation was that the beds and bathrooms are in need of refurbishment; nevertheless we really appreciated the overall atmosphere and character.

We did sample some of the other restaurants on the island and would particularly recommend the It-Tmun, Mt. Carmel St. in Xlendi. The food was excellent and the owners were very hospitable and friendly (Leli and Jane Buttigieg). Their son, Patrick, also runs a restaurant in Europe St., Victoria, by the same name. This was beautifully decorated and again the food was excellent.

We would definitely return, particularly if the owners of the Ta Cenc decide to refurbish.

Loved Hotel Ta Cenc

I recently returned from an 8 day stay at the Ta Cenc Hotel in Gozo. I thoroughly enjoyed my holiday. The restraunt was very good; the food was delicious, and if you didn't like anything on the menu, the chef made something that suited you, the staff were amazingly friendly, and the atmosphere was extremely pleasant, very romantic, and yet cosy. The bar was lovely, had a wide range of drinks, including after-dinner and non-alcoholic cocktails, different coffees and herbal teas. The barmen were polite, very friendly, and wished to please. The pool was clean and at a pleasant temperature. Rooms were not to big and not to small, and had everything you would need for a pleasant holiday. The terraces had beautiful views of the islands, and the location of the hotel was perfect, close to the capital, and yet far enough to enjoy the peace. The complimentary bus to Victoria was on time, and helpful. I could go on forever, but I will not bore you! I would highly recommend it to anyone, and hope with all my heart that I could go back.

Relaxing retreat

from grandmaTJO
We enjoyed a relaxing holiday here during the first two weeks in October and the weather was superb -sunny and warm. Not a five-star Hotel overall - 4-star plus for its food but 3-star for many of its rooms.

We had Room 47 and the only means of access was across 20 yards of uneven rocks - called a courtyard! Fortunately, although in our early 60s, we are reasonably mobile and even after drinks with dinner we negotiated access successfully - aided by a torch! It could be a real problem for the less mobile. We asked for a move within an hour of arriving, were told that the hotel was full and nothing could be done for the first four days but were promised a move. We heard no more from the hotel and did not pursue the matter because the accommodation, despite its location, grew on us. It appeared to be a family unit and was quite spacious but with the only access door to the unit closed, had no natural light whatsoever. We found the bed very comfortable but the fittings in the room were tired and more well-used-MFI than Marks and Spencer!!

The dinner menu was varied and interesting and the food was good - it would have been improved if the white wine had been chilled more and had chef invariably not left the crepes under the grill or in the oven too long! This is nit-picking, however. The dinners were very enjoyable and the waiting staff were very helpful and friendly.

Both outdoor swimming pools were excellent, but cold(!) - persevere for the first 3 minutes and they're fine!!

Ta Cenc Gozo

from traveltheworld45
My wife and I stayed at TaCenc at the end of September 2004. Like others we were concerned having read the reviews. Our acomodation was a Trullo which was fine, no complaints at all. The mistake we made was that we booked half board, in our opinion the food was poor certainly not 5 star and the service was mediocre and it became tedious eating there every night. We had some excellent lunches at several good restaurants on the island.
The hotel now seems tired and is not 5 star by european or american standards. A car is essential and there is much to see and TaCenc is a useful base. We are both retired and well travelled so I hope this is a well balanced opinion and if we go back to Gozo we would stay elsewhere.

Desolate Paradise

from granddamme
We recently returned from a 8 day visit to Ta Cenc in the serene and quiet island of Gozo, Malta.
Having never been to Malta we were stunned at the location and uniqueness of the property. Steps away from the most amazing sheer cliffs and a natural fjord beach for swimming. The hotel offered a lovely full service restaurant right on the rock beach with a view that is like none other.
The family suite room which we had was spectacular - especially for two people and had everything a five star resort could ask for.
Room service which we did often due to our sheer tiredness from travelling was excellent and faster than most North American Hotels.
Disappointingly the food at the restaurant was very bland and obviously catered to a very neutral group with unexciting palates. We were hard pressed to find anything on the menu that was truly Maltese or with European bursting flavours.Really need to spike up the spices etc. (We did a side trip to Sicily and there was no comparison to the food.)
Pool is absolutley beautiful and extremely quiet - too quiet for my liking. Lots of UK tourists who whisper and hence not much laughter or sounds of enjoyment around the pool - most unusual but very nice none the less.
Overall service was generally very good.
Areas of improvement in my mind would be - more information on the general area for tourists, better shuttle service to the beach and main areas of town, have snorkelling equipment available at the beach (a must) and more attentive bar service in the bar and at pool side. Bar service was generally very slow and seemingly disinterested in whether you required a drink. (Also they need to find out how to make a proper Martini - the James Bond version.)
Overall would highly recommend the hotel for those that are able to handle the surrounding arid, rock terrain of Gozo.

Top Local Tips for Gozo

Little extras There's little laid on in the hotel in the evening - just a great meal in an enchanting setting, with twinkling lights under a giant carob tree. We take a small portable DVD player with us for when we feel like watching a movie. (DVDs can be hired in nearby Victoria).

Don't eat here Lot's of nice places to eat outside of the hotel

See the islands There's so much to see, just on Gozo never mind Malta. Get a hire car and make sure it's got aircon. It's blistering in the afternoon. Or go in Spring or Autumn.
