Top Local Tips for Riga

Shopping, Pubs and clubs I was pleasantly suprised by the shopping there. My girlfriend is a bag and shoe fanatic, and she foundplenty to choose from in the smaller shops, as well as in the Galerija Centrs, a modern designer shopping centre. Things were pretty much the same price as back home although you could find something a little different. However in the smaller shops in the old town, local Vodka was as little as £3 for a litre bottle and it was as good as anything you will find in this country including Smirnoff, Absolut etc. In the evening, if you are going around the bars, we found that rather than following a plan looking for specific places, it was better to just go where the wind takes you, as most bars were equally enjoyable, our favourite being De Lacys for the atmosphere, friendly staff, and cheap drinks. Great place to escape for an inexpensive break. I would reccomend midweek for couples as there are no stag groups until the weekend.

Resturant tip - and more... Restaurant next to the hotel is ok – but the really good one is the next house again… can’t remember the name but it is the one with white table linen –excellent food and wine (but small portions)! Ask for “a room with a view” – one of our rooms had view out to the marked place – the other two had to the back garden, not so nice! We managed to get tickets to the opera when we arrived in Riga, cheap and good! Riga is a nice city – but it is not Paris or any big western city. Explore and have fun – if you order Caesar salad you will get something that might look almost similar but taste different – let it be part of the travel experience!
