Another Example of Uncaring/Uninformed Staff
from A TripAdvisor MemberAverage hotel, location not that central
from polar_bThe rooms are fine and the interior is all very new. When I visited my mum and I had separate rooms. Both our rooms got quite warm and the "aircon" is not aircon at all - even when leaving it on max and at 8 degrees it didn't make much of a difference. I hate to think what it will be like on hot summer days. When you leave your room the ventilation is switched off, so expect your room to be boiling if the sun is shining.
The reception staff were mostly very helpful. They helped us make dinner reservations and also told the taxi drivers where we wanted to go (as most taxi drivers only seem to speak Russian). Check-in was slow though and I found there were queues at the reception at all times of the day. The minibar fridge in my mum's room was broken - despite reporting this 4 times it was still not fixed by the time we left.
There are two bars, one on ground level and one on the 11th floor. I found the ground level much more cozy, despite the lack of a view. The hotel restaurant and bars are all horrendously overpriced. Service was slow, and the food was so-so. The menu has few choices and the food on offer is quite bland. Would not recommend eating at the restaurant - venture outside and find a nice Russian or Latvian restaurant instead.
I had been told this hotel is in a central location. This not quite true. It is situated in what could be termed "city centre" but it's a 15-20 minute walk to the old town where most tourists go. If you want to go anywhere by public transport there is a 5-10 minute walk to the nearest trolley bus and tram stops. There are few restaurants and bars in the local area surrounding the hotel. Luckily there are usually lots of red taxis waiting outside the hotel, these taxis are very reasonable so getting around is not a problem providing you are prepared to a pay a few Lats for the taxi rides.
What a great hotel!
from A TripAdvisor MemberPleasant and a good value.
from A TripAdvisor MemberStylish hotel but uncaring staff
from dublin_boyThe big let down was the staff. Checking in took an age as 2 other parties had arrived and everone, not just the person who made the reservation, had to complete a registration card. There was only 1 person on the desk and has was swamped. When eventually we were checked in he simpy handed me the key card and started talking to the next guest without so much as a "enjoy your stay".
Things then got a lot more serious when we were assaulted by thugs 2 minutes after leaving the hotel. My partner suferd serious fracture to his elbows. The hotel staff called for the police and ambulance but really didn't seem to give a damn. I returned to the hotel about 06:30 to send an urgent fax to my medical insurance company; the staff member suggested I wait half an hour as he was busy. I told him it was urgent, then he disappeared to a back office where I could see him chatting to some colleagues before reemerging after 10 minutes to say the at fax machine was broken. I went to the Reval Hotel Latvia around the corner and explained the situation; they were very understanding and immediately sent the fax free of charge. Our insurance company agreed to fly us home immediately; when I returned to check out 2 days early, I was presented not with a refund but a bill for 33Lets for medical attention.
I can't blame the hotel for the assault - such things can sadly happen anywhere. But I would suggest that you should only stay here if you value style over service and sympathy.
Albert Hotel - Very clean, friendly and comfy
from TecwenwhittockThe staff were all very friendly and the rooms were of a decent size and very comfortable. Every room has an LCD TV, however only a couple of channels were in English.
Very clean bathroom, with heated floor and powerful shower.
The Starbar on the 11th floor has a fantastic view across the city and is very reasonably priced (even the mini-bar in the room is of a good price).
The hotel is about 10 to 15 mins walk to the old town where most of the bars, restaurant and clubs seemed to be, however there are still a few good places within a 5 minute walk radius of the hotel open until the very early hours of the morning.
Good selection of food on the breakfast, although some of it may not appeal to British tastes, but still great value since it is free!
Safety deposit boxes are free and require 2 keys to open. They are also secured in a locked room.
Free internet access in the hotel foyer.

from A TripAdvisor MemberWonderful Albert Hotel, Riga
from A TripAdvisor MemberFabulous Albert
from A TripAdvisor MemberI have stayed in hotels in many countries and have not been in any that beats the service and excellent value for money the Albert has.
Keep up the good standards you are setting
ve ever stayed in
from deanovillaWell it beat all expectations.
It is easily one of the nicest hotels I have stayed in and for the price is an absolute gem. I believe the price may have gone up since I booked as word of mouth is quickly spreading at how nice this hotel is, so book now before it goes up anymore.
The Star Lounge on the 11th floor has fantastic views over Riga, and is a wonderful place to start a night out with a few cocktails and some chilled out tunes.
All the staff were extremely friendly, most spoke very good English and ALL the female staff were absolute stunners! ;)
The only bad point was on the final night where we ended up waiting 2 hours for ours meal in the restaurant and when it finally arrived it was awful. The explantion for this was that the chef was on his own that night and the dining room was quite busy but I felt they should have let us know this at the start rather than just making us sit there. Also I ordered the Risotto and when she was finally bringing the meals to the table she informed me that they didnt have any! Shouldnt they have mentioned that 2 hours earlier?
It really was an awful experince but the other 3 and a half days were soooo good that I can even forgive that blip.
Top Local Tips for Riga
Museum of Occupation Not everyone's idea of a fun time, but very interesting and moving.
The Lido If you want to sample a typical Latvian evening...go to the Lido(Atputas Centre)....the number 3, 7 or 9 tram takes you out there and makes for a lovely evening/day trip. Its a complex of log cabin style buildings that look permanently Christmassey! They have a huge ice skating rink with loud music for the skaters to enjoy (and only costs about £1.50 for 2 hours!Less for children)They have one main cabin style building which is the restaurant arena. They have an Express restaurant which is a buffet with everything imaginable for such low prices.Underground they have the Beer Cellar with Latvian beers among others and great food, complete with Latvian bands playing music which you can hear throughout the building ,no matter which level you're on!Then at the top its for the connoisseurs of food with the "Bistro" restaurant.Which is for people with a higher budget! All decor is wooden with booths/cave like decor. All food is made fresh and you can see Chef's cooking the food in front of you!
look up you'll miss the art deco unless you keep looking up in the right areas, as the ground floors tend to be banks/shops etc
