Top Local Tips for Venice

A few tips about Venice. Venice is a beatiful and wonderfully exotic city, a dream come true, a fairy tale almost. But be prepared, it is terribly expensive for an average tourist. You had better walk as much as possible, or otherwise buy the daily tickets for € 15,00 per person (prices of 2007), allowing you to travel on the vaporetti for the whole day (good for visiting the isles). As to the gondola, you have to negotiate a good bargain, otherwise you'll be ripped off. A price of € 60,00 for two is already a good one, especially early in the morning. As an alternative which gives you a flair of a trip on a gondola, find the tragheti gondola services (tragheto it's the singular), which criss-cross the Grand Canal for only € 0,50 (fifty cents), per person. If you'd like to visit the Basilica di San Marco in the high season, do it early in the morning, or you'll have to wait for hours. It is worth climbing the Campanile of the Piazza di San Marco, and the one on the Island of San Giorggio Maggiore.

There are no cheap eats in Venice Venice is probably the most expensive city of Italy, per our hotel desk. Drinks in Venice can run about $15 US each, and the portion is small. Dining around Venice is high priced, but deals are noted to be found away from San Marco square. The vaporetto stops in Lido and other small islands with cheap restaurants. The area of Mestre is very quiet and has family style dining establishments that are better priced. This area is also much less congested.
