A small but luxurious hotel on the grand canal, about 5 minutes walk from the Rialto. Charming and efficient staff, spotless room, huge immaculate bathroom (great robes) room cleaned twice a day; Nice small touches like weather forecast with your chocolate at bedtime. Breakfast fine if you enjoy continental buffets. Bar prices high though...don't drink Malt...a bottle is cheaper at home! Well worth getting the Grand canal view room, as side rooms are rather dark (tho cool in summer). Hotel is right by Vaporetto stop...very handy, but bear in mind they run all night!

The Palazzo Sant Angelo is located right on the canal, with its own canal entrance, so you can be delivered to the door by your gondola/water taxi. This has to be the most romantic way to arrive at your hotel from the airport. Also, the waterbus stops right outside. The hotel itself is beautifully decorated in Venetian style, silk walls and fake antiques, and the staff are extremely helpful. The room was comfortable and clean, but we only had a view of a side canal - the rooms with a view over the Grand Canal are much more expensive, but maybe we should have stumped up the cash. On the downside, the bar was devoid of atmosphere (being empty didn't help) and drinks, etc. were expensive. There is a view of the canal from the bar, which helps a bit. Also, there is a feel of ""standard business hotel"" about the place, which some might find reassuring and others might find unimaginative. Would we go back again? Probably not, because it's not our usual type of trip - we are more inclined to go canoeing on the Zambezi or prospecting in Australia than staying in posh hotels, but as posh hotels go it's a good example of the type.

Top Local Tips for Venice

In bed by 10pm Although Venice is breathtakingly beautiful everything seemed to be closed by 10pm. We did find one bar open after 10 but that was it.

Map Get a good quality map. We like the Streetwise maps because they are easy to read, waterproof and fold easily. Venetian streets are confusing until you spend some time and get comfy and familiar. The beauty of Venice is getting lost and walking.

Water Bus Buy the pass for the number of days you'll be in town - much easier and cheaper than paying each time you board. Take a waterbus 'tour' of Venice - there's one that circles the island and makes many stops. It's great to see Venice from the water.
