Location is 100 feet from vaporetti stop, so very easy to get to and from the city. A 12 minute walk from the train station (important if leaving early on weekend since vaporetti doesn't start until about 8 a.m. The staff was very pleasant and helpful. The hotel is family owned. I asked one of them for a recommendation of where to eat, and he offered two places, both fine. The community in this little area is quaint and full of life-shops, market, restaurants and a great place to people watch the locals. Hotel has internet. Breakfast is execellent-warm breads, yogurt and fresh fruit, orange juice, cheese and meats-served between 8-10 am daily. This was a wonderful experience.

Top Local Tips for Venice

Expect to walk Get a free vaporetti map early and familiarize yourself with which way the boats go. Be prepared for crowded boats most of the day. Wear great, comfortable shoes-you will walk everywhere! Experience local culture in the neighborhoods away from the central part of Venice around the Rialto Bridge.

It's worth buying the 30€ unlimited transportation pass from any vaporetto kiosk Nobody ever checked but it was really worth it to buy the 72-hour unlimited public transportation pass for 30€. Since vaporetto rides cost 6€ for tourists and you will probably ride at least one upon arrival and one upon departure, you will recover the cost of it pretty quickly. You also only have to validate the pass once and you can hop on any boat (or bus) in Venice.

Venice is great for an afternoon and evening... I was pretty disappointed in Venice. I expected it to be fancy and a little luxurious and beatiful. It was actually decaying, dirty and touristy, in my opinion. I would recommend taking a train into Venice in the afternoon, going to St. Marks (watch out for the pigeons), having dinner at Osteria al Bomba near Campo S. S. Apostoli, a block off Strada Nuova on Calle dell'Oca. Ask for their anti-pasti plate--24 euros and feeds 2 people. It was one of best meals we had in Italy. And then taking a gondola ride back to the train station and then move on to your next destination.
