I booked Hotel Santa Chiara through the British Airways website along with my flights. On arrival I was greeted by very polite staff who spoke perfect English and were extremely helpful throughout my short stay. The hotel is immaculate and beautifully decorated.The dining room,tastefully done out with good quality table-linen, has a lovely view over the Grand Canal, as did my room, a small single which was very comfortable. The breakfasts were absolutely superb with a large range of foods,including cereals, breads, meats,cheeses, fruits, yogurts, juice coffee etc etc. As a lone female traveller (my daughter was staying elsewhere in Venice with her school choir). I felt extremly comfortable and welcome at this hotel and would certainly recommend it. I stayed for 2 nights in October 2005, and hope to return there one day with my husband, when the weather might be a bit brighter!

Top Local Tips for Venice

Have a picnic The Coop at P Roma has great prepared food, fruit, cakes etc at cheaper than London prices ( as well as 2 Euro bottles of very pleasant local chardonnay!)

Inexpensive eating out Eat as far away from the main tourist places as possible and you will get fantastic food at fantastic prices - get lost in the streets off the main squares and the atmosphere, ambience and food quality is excellent.

a brief jot venice was lovely, its first sight is magical and is a memory i will cherish. unfortunately, it is also an expensive destination for everything, from food to souvenirs and all else. some souvenir vendors were rude and nasty.. but there were also lots of lovely people i met. i felt murano was definitely over-rated and swindly, coz apparently unless one buys glass from one of the bigger reputed showrooms, i was told a lot of the glass is not made there.burano was magical and in my estimation, the best part of my trip. that place is a must see.
