Plan in advance- Take public water taxi if possible From the train... if you have luggage. Find prior to your trip how close a vaparetto stop is to your hotel. Really it depends on how much luggage you have and how many bridges you have to go over. I would arrange transportation from your hotel if necessary. You don't want to be lost with tons of luggage in Venice especially at night. Water taxis are HUGE rip off's. Lots of stairs lots of bridges, not lots of help.
