Because the hotel is on the Lido (but facing the lagoon) it is extremely quiet at night as there is virtually no traffic outside. The rooms are well fitted out and the decor is in excellent condition throughout the hotel.
The buffet breakfast was marvellous and offered a full range of cereals, yoghurts, cheeses, cold meats, bread rolls and croissants, fruit juices, cakes and pastries, jams and marmelades. Only one slight snag - all the tables were for two or three diners. A family of four would therefore have to occupy two adjacent tables but that should not be a problem unless the family had very young children (but then, who takes very young children to Venice for a holiday?).
The staff are extremely friendly and helpful and can converse fluently in English. They are happy to help you plan your day by suggesting sights to see and places to visit and the free trip to a glass factory on Murano (by fast water taxi) is well worth it with no obligation to purchase anything. The Reception Desk will book the water taxi at a time to suit you.
We stayed over the Carnival which is a delighful time to be in Venice as there is so much on throughout the historical centre.
The only drawback of staying on the Lido is the cost of the daily journey across the lagoon. The fares for the water bus in February 2006 were 5 euros per person per single journey. Better value is the Venice Card (which includes entry to some museuams as well) or the 72 hour travel only pass which, at 25 euros, is a slightly cheaper option if you don't do museums!
Incidentally, the Hotel Panorama is directly opposite the water bus stops and there is also the Alilaguna service which takes you directly to Marco Polo Airport with just one or two stops. The journey takes 50 minutes and runs every half hour. Note that there are two slightly different routes (both stop at Murano and one service has an additional stop) but they take the same amount of time.

Top Local Tips for Venice
Leave the car at home Avoid the cruise ships by visiting early in the morning as soon as the museums open...much shorter lines
Sightseeing In Venice Start early so you can leave when the afternoon crowds swell.
in summer it's packed! We went in August and that was a big mistake! It seemed like the whole world was in Venice, the queues were hours long to get into everything, notably the Basilica and Palazzio Ducale. And the crowds made the heat seem even more intense. It was very irritating having to queue up even to buy an overpriced sandwich. The best time to go sightseeing is first thing in the morning. Obviously by the time you see one thing it's not so early anymore so I would advise making at least 3 trips to St Mark's square, visiting everything you can before it gets too crowded and then going off somewhere to chill out and calm your nerves (if you're anything like me).

We asked for two rooms, the first with two single beds and the second with double bed and single. The first room was setup with double bed and the second had the double but only a put-you-up masquerading as the the single. My teenage daughter, a very experienced sun lounger user, was the unlucky recipient and fell out of it on a daily basis. Very tedious for her but very funny for her mum and sister.
We would not stay there again as the accumulation of irksome niggles tells you that the management are not on the top of their game.
