Worst hotel experience of my life!!!!!

There are not enough words to describe how bad this place really is!! DO NOT COME TO THIS HOTEL IF YOU WANT TO ENJOY YOUR STAY IN VENICE!!!!!

As soon as we checked in to this hotel, we got told there was a 'problem with the hotell' and got made to walk 10-15 minutes across the busy town with our luggage from this hotel (right by the water, which is why we had booked this hotel) to a chain hotel in the middle of town called Hotel Aetena. When we questioned the reception staff about why we had to change hotels, they were rude and ignorant and kept insisting that this was the 'same hotel' so did not see any problem in making us stay in a hotel different to the hotel we booked!! We all realised pretty early on that this hotel and its chain hotels were clearly a scam aimed at tourists. When we asked for a refund of our money, they refused and were not helpful or pleasant to deal with whatsoever. I have never met people as rude as them in my life!!! (and I live in London so that's saying something!)

To add to our grief, our double bedroom in Hotel Aetena was so small.. all that fit in the room was a bed.. not even enought space on the floor to put our luggage! The bathroom door couldnt even open up completely because the bed was in front of the door blocking it. Also, when going in to the bathroom, theres barely enough space in there to move! The cleanliness of the bathroom is another horror story as well.

We also got asked to hand our room keys back to reception every time we left the room for 'security measures' so that the staff could see who was in their rooms at what times. I've never had to do this at any hotel i've ever stayed in... and was worried about my luggage in the room being touched the whole time i was away from the hotel!!

I cannot emphasise enough how bad this place really is. Please - do not stay here if you want to enjoy yourself in Venice!!

A good central pick for Venice

This hotel is located a few steps from the Rialto bridge and is a perfect central location to explore Venice. The hotel is very clean with many modern amenities in the rooms, it even has a centralized energy saving system that shuts off power in the rooms when guests are absent. There is no elevator and the rooms are small but that is to be expected in Venice. The front desk staff is polite and professional and they boast their knowledge about Venice and the many attractions. We still advise that you independently verify what they tell you because they sent us on an hour walk to the Guggenheim museum and it was closed that day! The hotel has a business arrangement to send you for free by taxi boat to a glass factory in Murano (you do not need to buy anything) but be advised that you are on your own for the return trip (make sure to ask directions for your return with the vaporetto). The main disappointment was the breakfast in the basement room. The items offered were below the standard one would expect for the hotel category and the kitchen staff was not very friendly. For the return to the airport we were advised to take a 30 min taxi boat which delivered us straight to the airport gate. This was very cool, a bit pricy (about $90 for a family of four; but everything is very expensive in Venice) and had the definite advantage of avoiding any traffic delays. Overall, we recommend it !

Loved our stay at Hotel Marconi

My husband and I spent our first year anniversary in Venice and decided to stay at Hotel Marconi based on its location right on the Grand Canal and the good reviews it received. We were not disappointed! Our room was charming with that authentic Venetian feel (there was even a metal mirror to top it off.) The cleaning staff did an excellent job in keeping our room immaculate everyday, and the staff really knows how to take care of its customers. Upon arrival at the hotel, we were told that there was an available room at a "sister" hotel just on the other side of the Grand Canal with a Canal view room. The room was offered to us for one night at no extra charge. We even had help carrying our luggage all the way across the Rialto bridge to get to the other hotel. What a great way to spend the first night in Venice! The staff was also helpful in providing suggestions on places to eat. We tried every restaurant recommended to us and we were pleased with them all. If you're looking for a good quality, centrally located hotel with true Venetian feel, Hotel Marconi is the right place to book.

Top Local Tips for Venice

arriving and departing In Venice, the vaporetto and water taxi are the only forms of transportation. Getting to the airport, especially early in the morning, can be a very expensive and challenging problem. At the Marconi hotel they had a schedule and information for the "Airport Shuttle Vaporetto" and willingly gave the instructions and time to assist us in a painless way to leave the city and arrive at the airport on time. Thank you again. The Murano glass jewellry is everywhere in Venice. It is a little overwhelming but persevere as you will be thrilled when you get it home and away from everwhelm!

Off the beaten track Dont stay on the main thououghfares, the place is a total rip off, go where the locals go down wee back alleys and canals. And eat italian, god that food is good.

Gondola suggestion Make sure you negotiate exactly what you expect from the gondoleer. You'll almost certainly have to pay ahead of time. Unless you have a specific route in mind, I'd recommend negotiating for a certain length of time. We were promised a certain route and told it would take 40 minutes. We must have been speeding, because our route only took 20 minutes. We both felt that the gondola experience was a little overrated. I'm sure there are some honest gondoleers, but assume the worst, and negotiate every detail. If you have a bad feeling, move on to another person. You'll get chased down and likely promised whatever you want.
