Top Local Tips for Venice

Best Murano glass The best Murano glass is actually in Venice. Visit Mauro Vianello at his workshop located at 3728 Calle della Mandola near San Marco. He is a delightful artisan who hand blows all his work right in the shop. He speaks several languages and will custom make a piece while you watch (if you wait to return the next day since he anneals it overnight in an oven). Visit his website at www.glasshandmade.com for directions and pictures of his work. His prices are fair for real Murano glass (e.g., he uses gold instead of the copper many of the knockoffs use) and his work has more character than many of the other stores.

Murano Tips Make note of the prices of the Murano items you see in Venice before visiting Murano island, as many times the prices on the same items in Venice are less than those on the island.

reading maps When you arrive take a water taxi to your hotel, you'll get there quicker than trying to get there yourself when you get off the waterbus. The narrower the alley you walk down the more important site it leads to. It's easy once you get you bearings but there is not one straight alley, path, walkway in Venice. There are many bridges and therefore many steps. I did not find it dirty except for St Mark's Square. It is beautiful but be ready for pidgeons. I will return to Venice alittle wiser about getting around the next time.
