Top Local Tips for Venice
Gritti over-rated I always wanted to stay at the Gritti and finally did in 2002. I'm glad I did but would not again - unless I had enough money to stay right on the Grand Canal. We paid several hundred dollars - the room was small and not the magnificent rooms on the website - and the view was a side canal. And most disappointing was that breakfast was not included.
Arriving in Venice Take a private water taxi from Marco Polo airport. It really is fabulous and was possibly the highlight of our trip, racing towards this magical skyline and partway up the Grand Canal, stepping off right onto the hotel pontoon. Expensive but so worth it!
Use the Vaporetti If you can't walk somewhere the vaporetti, or water buses, are an inexpensive alternative and, at least the main one (#1) going up and down the Grand Canal, runs continuously. Water taxis, which seem to charge a set 50 Euros no matter where you're going are very convenient but expensive
