We have just returned from the Giorgioni in Venice.

We booked a Junior Suite and were pleasantly surprised with the comfort it afforded. The hotel was kept spotless and the staff were some of the best we have encountered. The complimentary iced tea each afternoon was a nice touch.

The only slight downer for us was, that like most continental hotels, the satalite TV in our room could only receive BBC World and Sky News, with no UK radio stations.

Hotel worth a little blow-out

We stayed at Hotel Giorgione because it had been recommended by the Lonely Planet as a worthwhile place to blow the budget, and we would agree wholeheartedly. The rooms were decorated in wonderful old-venice style, but still managed to hide all the mod-cons in there very well. Decent sized rooms for a couple, and shuttered doors opening to cute canal/street view. Although a little hard to find, it was in a fantastic position, and an easy walk to st Mark's square an all the rest of it. There was a great little cafe called Bepi just one minute's walk away too. The hotel had free internet cafe and pool table, and a cute little bar, and this beautiful pool (not for swimming unfortunately) coloured with twists of venetian glass resting on the bottom, around which you could have breakfast. One of the most lasting memories of a trip to Europe spanning a dozen or more cities and as many hotel stays (third visit to Italy, and second to Venice)

Top Local Tips for Venice

Guggenheim Museum Go there! Excellent Modern Art (Picasso, Jackson Pollock, Dali etc..) in a wonderful setting on the banks of the Grand Canal. Arrive nearby by using a Vaporetto (Gondola style taxi to cross the canal - costs one euro for two people). Good restaurant too!

Venetian Chandeliers Take the trip over to Murano for chandeliers instead of shopping in the shops in Venice. The factories are great, and you can see much more, and have your own chandelier custom made with what features you want off of other chandeliers and your own color choices.

Nice eatery Go to the restaurant 50 meters down from the front of the hotel (? Bepi) - best value for money and pleasant service - but all of them are way overpriced. Expect to pay 35 Euros per head including wine for moderately good food. Not the place to go if you want good Italian food - Sicily is better!
