Top Local Tips for Venice

Explore! Explore! Explore! Don't just stick to the main San Marco tourist area. We found the food and bars were much nicer and more reasonable out of this district. We also enjoyed the more peaceful atmosphere of these areas. San Marco can get very busy, hot and noisy. Although ake a map with you, we got lost a number of times and were saved by our trusty well worn map. It added to the fun though! We also at first thought the drinks were quite expensive but when you realise the size of the shots you are getting we thought they were reasonable value. So be warned if you drink at the same rate you do when at home you could end up very tipsy!

Getting around We flew to Treviso with Ryanair. There is a deicated Ryanair flight bus waiting outside. Takes you to the Piazzale Roma bus station. Get the timetable as the return journey is scheduled to suit the check in times for departures. Use the Vaporetto water bus service as much as you can, it is great value and as good as any sightseeing tour. The boats leave from the bus and railway stations, running along the Grand Canal with stops at each side. Easy to understand diagrams show the route numbers and destinations. Vaporettos also go out to the islands, well worth a visit to all, especially when the main tourist areas are crowded. Walking around the city is easy, and you can find beautiful quiet squares and deserted alleyways once you leave the touristy areas, but a map is a good idea.

Water transportation If you are planning an extended stay in Venice I would strongly recommend that you purchase a 72-hour pass for the vaporetto (Venice's water buses). This is simply the most efficient way of getting around this city.
