Top Local Tips for Venice

Harry's Bar This is a wonderful, must-visit restaurant and bar. The food is exquisite and the staff most gracious, friendly and helpful. My favourite restaurant in the world.

GO TO GIUIDECCA ISLAND Take the vaporetto and explore the island. We had three super meals here. Go into the boat yard, don't lose faith, follow the signs and you will be rewarded with a delicious meal at the restaurant there with a superb view of the Lido. Just along from one of the vaporetto stops is a superb pizza/pasta restaurant. Great food and great value.

Venice for young children Venice is usually seen as a couples destination, but we took two five year olds with us there for a long weekend and it went very well. First of all there are no cars so your kids can run around the street with no worries, they loved the bridges over the canals and watching the boats go underneath, finding fishes in the water and feeding them (its clean enough now for that), there are loads of restaurants which open early enough for english kids to eat with you early evening time and plenty of restaurants which do family food as well as the grown up dishes. They loved the idea of police boats, postman boats, grocery boats etc and feeding the pidgeons in St Marks Square was a good way of letting the mums soak up the atmosphere whilst they had fun for an hour or two. We stayed in an apartment rather than an hotel because it had a lounge room which we could relax in whilst the kids slept in their rooms and it was very good value for money in a great location.
