I happened to have stumbled on the Hotel Ai Mori D'Oriente on the internet, while frantically trying to put together a trip to Venice during the Canrivale week in order to propose to the woman who is now my wife. It was definitely one my luckier finds on the internet.

I can't say enough about the hotel. The location is excellent - far enough off the beaten track so that you can sleep quietly, yet close enough to walk to the Grand Canal or two vaporetto stops. The room was beautifully decorated in a middle-eastern decor and the service was friendly and helpful. There was a cute bar at the front of the hotel which was unfortunately underutilized. Speaking of unfortunate, the hotel will push a free tour of a Murano glass factory. They'll get you there for free, but just know that unless you buy something, you'll have to find your own way back (by vaporetto or water taxi).

The hotel had just opened and fortunately the prices were reasonable, which was amazing given that most hotels had jacked up their prices for the Carnivale. The price included a continental breakfast, which was an added bouns.

When my wife and I return to Venice to celebrate the anniversary of our engagement, we'll be staying at the Ai Mori D'Oriente.

Doge's Palace Take the secret itineries tour - it takes you behind the scenes of the palace and the ticket price includes the tour of the palace as well. Very good value. Book in advance - places limited.

GREAT Food, Great price We found a nice little trattoria on the Strada Nuova"Trattatoria Da Gianni" We had dinner there on our anniversay and lunch another day. House wine was great and inexpensive! I had the fish soup,which is more like a chioppino or boulliabase like we see here in the states. LOTS of seafood!
