Top Local Tips for Venice

Get a multiple day vaporetto ticket You will want to use the vaporettos if you stay for any length of time in Venice. There are convenient, and sometimes downright essential, like if you want to go to San Michele, Murano, Burano, or Lido. Do yourself a favor, and buy a multiple day ticket. That way, you don't have to stand in line every time you want to use a vaporetto. Guidebooks say that boat staff sell tickets onboard, but I NEVER saw anyone do this in 5 full days of travel. The fine is steep - 40 euros - if you don't have a ticket during a spot-check, which they do conduct. Also, it's not made clear when you do buy a ticket, but you must activate it using an electronic kiosk every time you use a vaporetto. Just hold the ticket up the machine, and the green light will flash, and you will see a confirmation message.

San Marco Stay away from San Marco early in the day!!!! It is JAMMED and very unpleasant. The better time to go is in the later afternoon, when all the cruise ship people have left. Also, bring an umbrella even on a sunny day. The sun is brutal and there is no shade. The umbrella works great to keep you protected and cooler.

public taxi's using the public water bus is much cheaper than getting a taxi boat. the water bus is about 13 euros each each one way and a water taxi is about 60 euros each one way, not really worth getting a water taxi, also if you are going to get on a gondola which you should if you are going to Venice, the prices start at about 200 euros but you can haggle them down top about 70 euros for a 40 minute tour.
