Top Local Tips for Venice

Murano-watch out We were a group of 7 (two families) who decided to take a trip to Murano. We were provided with a "complimentary" water taxi to a factory on Murano to see how glass was made. The tour conveniently let out into a showroom of various Murano glass pieces for sale. After looking at the outrageously priced items (I was told by another traveller the prices are marked up 200%), the tour guide informed us that we would not be given transportation back unless we made a purchase. We were so glad we didn't! Not only did we enjoy hours walking into all the shops, we had an amazing seafood lunch and enjoyed the sites (churches, etc). The little shops along the way had the very same items at fraction of the cost at the factory showroom (literally hundreds of euros less). When we were done, we found public water taxi's pulling up every few minutes to take daytrippers back for just a few euro. Definately go to Murano, and enjoy a tour, just don't fall for the hard sell at the end.

Trip to Murano We found out that a "free" ride over to Murano wasn't really "free". This is Venice's version of Timeshares. We did get a free ride over in a water taxi and we did get a tour of a glass maker. However, when we didn't buy anything substantial at the store and we asked how do we get back we where shown the public water bus stand. Not a major problem but it would have been nice to know up front. At least we got one way paid for!

Go By Vaporetto The Vaporetto (public transporation) service is fun and cheap if you buy the unlimited tickets. We actually never did take the gondola rides but saw plenty from the Vaporettos.
