Top Local Tips for Venice

Use the public water buses Do not think that you have to travel everywhere by private water taxi, the public vaparetto water buses are brilliant and get you everywhere in slow time so that you can enjoy Venice, it is not a city to rush.

Arriving by train is NOT for the faint of heart! Caution to those arriving by train into Venice as luggage assistance is virtually unavailable nor are the train schedules very dependable. Our train unexpecantly, because of being late, stopped on the outskirts of Venice requiring a transfer to another...navigating multiple stairs with our own luggage. Add this to our 7 hour late arrival in a rainstorm, & our introduction to Venice was not a pleasent experience. Language can be and often is a problem unless you speak Italian (i.e. all announcement on trains are in Italian and most signaege). Also, we found no assistance getting on and off the public water taxi system on the Grand Canal which is the primary method to get to hotels etc. Leaving by plane, we obtained a water taxi (at 90 Euros) to the airport which picked us up at the side of hotel and the experience was much better. The airport is busy but very clean and comfortable with international/english signs.

Hard not to get ripped off Drinks by the riverside and San Marco are very expensive with hidden extras. Head for the Jazz bar San Marco side near the Rialto Bridge. Reasonable prices and lovely, friendly staff.
